    Flux-gradient relationship for turbulent dispersion over complex terrain

    International audienceThe transfer of a passive tracer in inhomogeneous turbulent flow is investigated. Starting from Lumley's constitutive equation, we derived an expression for the ratio between the effective eddy diffusivity K and eddy diffusivity K as a function of three length scales characterizing the local turbulence structure, flux variations and turbulence inhomogeneities. The theoretical predictions for the one-dimensional case of inhomogeneous symmetric turbulence were validated through a comparison with the numerical results of a Lagrangian particle model simulating a wind tunnel experiment of dispersion in the lee of an idealized two-dimensional hill. A qualitative agreement is reached between the theoretical evaluation of K and the value obtained from the numerical simulation

    Three-year observations of halocarbons at the Nepal Climate Observatory at Pyramid (NCO-P, 5079 m a.s.l.) on the Himalayan range

    A monitoring programme for halogenated climate-altering gases has been established in the frame of the SHARE EV-K<sup>2</sup>-CNR project at the Nepal Climate Laboratory – Pyramid in the Himalayan range at the altitude of 5079 m a.s.l. The site is very well located to provide important insights on changes in atmospheric composition in a region that is of great significance for emissions of both anthropogenic and biogenic halogenated compounds. Measurements are performed since March 2006, with grab samples collected on a weekly basis. The first three years of data have been analysed. After the identification of the atmospheric background values for fourteen halocarbons, the frequency of occurrence of pollution events have been compared with the same kind of analysis for data collected at other global background stations. The analysis showed the fully halogenated species, whose production and consumption are regulated under the Montreal Protocol, show a significant occurrence of "above the baseline" values, as a consequence of their current use in the developing countries surrounding the region, meanwhile the hydrogenated gases, more recently introduced into the market, show less frequent spikes. <br><br> Atmospheric concentration trends have been calculated as well, and they showed a fast increase, ranging from 5.7 to 12.6%, of all the hydrogenated species, and a clear decrease of methyl chloroform (−17.7%). The comparison with time series from other stations has also allowed to derive Meridional gradients, which are absent for long living well mixed species, while for the more reactive species, the gradient increases inversely with respect to their atmospheric lifetime. The effect of long range transport and of local events on the atmospheric composition at the station has been analysed as well, allowing the identification of relevant source regions the Northern half of the Indian sub-continent. Also, at finer spatial scales, a smaller, local contribution of forest fires from the Khumbu valley has been detected

    Strontium and oxygen isotopes as indicators of Longobards mobility in Italy: an investigation at Povegliano Veronese

    The arrival of the Longobards in Northern Italy in 568 CE marked a period of renewed political stability in the Peninsula after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. The trajectory of the spread of Longobards in Italy across the Alps and into the South is known from many literary sources. However, their mobility and residence patterns at a population level remain to be fully understood. Here we present a multi-isotopic analysis (87Sr/86Sr and 18O/16O) of 39 humans and 14 animals buried at the Longobard necropolis of Povegliano Veronese (VR, Italy; 6th—8th century CE), to address mode and tempo of the spread of this population in the Peninsula. The geographical location of Povegliano Veronese plays a key role: the site lies along the Via Postumia, which was one of the main ancient Roman roads of Northern Italy, representing an important route in post-classical Italy. The integration of isotopic data with the archaeological evidence allowed us to determine the presence of individuals from at least three different regions of origin, building a diachronic map of the dynamics of mobility of this group in northern Italy

    An unprecedented case of cranial surgery in Longobard Italy (6th–8th century) using a cruciform incision

    The Longobard necropolis of Castel Trosino dates from the 6th to the 8th century CE. Among the tombs excavated, the skull of an older female shows the first evidence of a cross-shaped bone modification on a living subject. Macroscopic, microscopic, and CT scan analyses revealed signs of at least two sets of scraping marks. Specifically, SEM analysis shows that perimortem bone-scraping traces are present on the skull. Both healed and non-healed defects suggest that the woman has received at least twice intentional bone modifications to address her condition. This is the first evidence of a cross-shaped therapeutic intervention on a living subject

    Culture-based antibiotic susceptibility testing for Helicobacter pylori infection: a systematic review

    Background Primary antibiotic resistance in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) strains is increasing worldwide, affecting therapy success. The use of therapies tailored on susceptibility pre-testing at culture has been proposed, but data are still conflicting. Method We performed a systematic review to evaluate the role of a culture-based therapeutic approach for H. pylori treatment, taking into account the sensitivity of culture and the success rates achieved with tailored therapies in different therapeutic steps. Results We analyzed data from 51 studies. Overall, H. pylori strains were isolated in 80.7% of 7889 patients, the success rates being 78.1%, 77.5%, 86.3% and 86.6%, before first-, second-, third-line or more therapies, respectively. In comparative studies, the infection was cured in 89.9% of 2052 patients treated with tailored therapies, and in 77.6% of 2516 patients receiving empiric therapy (P<0.001). However, in the subanalysis, the tailored approach achieved optimal eradication rates (>90%) only when it was applied before first-and second-line therapies, but not before third-line or more attempts (<80%). Moreover, no significant difference emerged between the 2 approaches when data from only the most recent (last 5 years) studies were considered, as well as in those performed in Western populations. Conclusions The attempt to achieve antibiotic susceptibility testing before treatment failed in 20% of infected patients managed in dedicated laboratories. Culture-tailored therapies administered after 2 or more therapies achieved suboptimal eradication rates. The role of bacterial culture in patients whose therapeutic management failed to eradicate H. pylori probably needs to be corroborated by further data

    Patients infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) often have liver steatosis, suggesting the possibility of a viral cytopathic effect. The aim of this study was to correlate the occurrence and severity of liver steatosis with HCV RNA type, level and sequence of the core-encoding region. We scored the liver steatosis in 101 HCV-infected individuals carefully selected to exclude other risk factors of a fatty liver. Results were compared with HCV RNA genotype and level in serum and liver. In selected patients, we assessed the effect of antiviral therapy on steatosis and the relationship between nucleocapsid sequence heterogeneity and fat infiltration. Steatosis was found in 41 (40.6%) patients, irrespective of sex, age or route of infection. HCV genotype 3 was associated with higher steatosis scores than other genotypes. A significant correlation between steatosis score and titer of intrahepatic HCV RNA was found in patients infected with genotype 3, but not in those infected with genotype 1. In selected patients, response to alpha-interferon was associated with the disappearance of steatosis. Analysis of the nucleocapsid of 14 HCV isolates failed to identify a sequence specifically associated with the development of steatosis. We provide virological and clinical evidence that the steatosis of the liver is the morphological expression of a viral cytopathic effect in patients infected with HCV genotype 3. At variance with published evidence from experimental models, the HCV nucleocapsid protein does not seem to fully explain the lipid accumulation in these patients

    Lenalidomide is a recent thalidomide analog used for the treatment of refractory multiple myeloma. The main toxicity of this drug consists in severe neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. Lenalidomide-associated liver injury is rare, manifesting itself as elevated liver enzymes and hyperbilirubinemia reversible upon weeks after drug withdrawal. We report here in detail the clinical course as well as the biological and histological alterations of an acute lenalidomide-induced liver injury. Findings on liver biopsy allowed us to discriminate acute inflammatory changes due to the drug and minor associated lesions of graft-versus-host disease in this patient with recurrent myeloma after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation

    European emissions of HCFC-22 based on eleven years of high frequency atmospheric measurements and a Bayesian inversion method

    HCFC-22 (CHClF2), a stratospherie ozone depleting substance and a powerful greenhouse gas, is the third most abundant anthropogenic halocarbon in the atmosphere. Primarily used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems, its global production and consumption have increased during the last 60 years, with the global increases in the last decade mainly attributable to developing countries. In 2007, an adjustment to the Montreal Protocol for Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer called for an accelerated phase out of HCFCs, implying a 75% reduction (base year 1989) of HCFC production and consumption by 2010 in developed countries against the previous 65% reduction. In Europe HCFC-22 is continuously monitored at the two sites Mace Head (Ireland) and Monte Cimone (Italy). Combining atmospheric observations with a Bayesian inversion technique, we estimated fluxes of HCFC-22 from Europe and from eight macro-areas within it, over an 11-year period from January 2002 to December 2012, during which the accelerated restrictions on HCFCs production and consumption have entered into force. According to our study, the maximum emissions over the entire domain was in 2003 (38.2 +/- 4.7 Gg yr(-1)), and the minimum in 2012 (12.1 +/- 2.0 Gg yr(-1)); emissions continuously decreased between these years, except for secondary maxima in the 2008 and 2010. Despite such a decrease in regional emissions, background values of HCFC-22 measured at the two European stations over 2002-2012 are still increasing as a consequence of global emissions, in part from developing countries, with an average trend of ca 7.0 ppt yr(-1). However, the observations at the two European stations show also that since 2008 a decrease in the global growth rate has occurred. In general, our European emission estimates are in good agreement with those reported by previous studies that used different techniques. Since the currently dominant emission source of HCFC-22 is from banks, we assess the banks' size and their contribution to the total European emissions up to 2030, and we project a fast decrease approaching negligible emissions in the last five years of the considered period. Finally, inversions conducted over three month periods showed evidence for a seasonal cycle in emissions in regions in the Mediterranean basin but not outside it. Emissions derived from regions in the Mediterranean basin were ca. 25% higher in warmer months than in colder months. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd
