    Time-fixed rendezvous by impulse factoring with an intermediate timing constraint

    A method is presented for factoring a two-impulse orbital transfer into a three- or four-impulse transfer which solves the rendezvous problem and satisfies an intermediate timing constraint. Both the time of rendezvous and the intermediate time of a alinement are formulated as any element of a finite sequence of times. These times are integer multiples of a constant plus an additive constant. The rendezvous condition is an equality constraint, whereas the intermediate alinement is an inequality constraint. The two timing constraints are satisfied by factoring the impulses into collinear parts that vectorially sum to the original impulse and by varying the resultant period differences and the number of revolutions in each orbit. Five different types of solutions arise by considering factoring either or both of the two impulses into two or three parts with a limit for four total impulses. The impulse-factoring technique may be applied to any two-impulse transfer which has distinct orbital periods

    Ozone reference models for the middle atmosphere (new CIRA)

    Models of ozone vertical structure were generated that were based on multiple data sets from satellites. The very good absolute accuracy of the individual data sets allowed the data to be directly combined to generate these models. The data used for generation of these models are from some of the most recent satellite measurements over the period 1978 to 1983. A discussion is provided of validation and error analyses of these data sets. Also, inconsistencies in data sets brought about by temporal variations or other factors are indicated. The models cover the pressure range from from 20 to 0.003 mb (25 to 90 km). The models for pressures less than 0.5 mb represent only the day side and are only provisional since there was limited longitudinal coverage at these levels. The models start near 25 km in accord with previous COSPAR international reference atmosphere (CIRA) models. Models are also provided of ozone mixing ratio as a function of height. The monthly standard deviation and interannual variations relative to zonal means are also provided. In addition to the models of monthly latitudinal variations in vertical structure based on satellite measurements, monthly models of total column ozone and its characteristic variability as a function of latitude based on four years of Nimbus 7 measurements, models of the relationship between vertical structure and total column ozone, and a midlatitude annual mean model are incorporated in this set of ozone reference atmospheres. Various systematic variations are discussed including the annual, semiannual, and quasibiennial oscillations, and diurnal, longitudinal, and response to solar activity variations

    The authors report the first demonstration of holographic techniques in the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region. Holograms were produced with coherent 1182 A radiation. The holograms were recorded in polymethyl methacrylate and read out with an electron microscope. A holographic grating with a fringe spacing of 836 A was produced and far-field Fraunhofer holograms of sub-micron particles were recorded

    Modification of an impulse-factoring orbital transfer technique to account for orbit determination and maneuver execution errors

    A method has previously been developed to satisfy terminal rendezvous and intermediate timing constraints for planetary missions involving orbital operations. The method uses impulse factoring in which a two-impulse transfer is divided into three or four impulses which add one or two intermediate orbits. The periods of the intermediate orbits and the number of revolutions in each orbit are varied to satisfy timing constraints. Techniques are developed to retarget the orbital transfer in the presence of orbit-determination and maneuver-execution errors. Sample results indicate that the nominal transfer can be retargeted with little change in either the magnitude (Delta V) or location of the individual impulses. Additonally, the total Delta V required for the retargeted transfer is little different from that required for the nominal transfer. A digital computer program developed to implement the techniques is described

    A comparison of ISCCP and FIRE satellite cloud parameters

    One of the goals of the First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) is the quantification of the uncertainties in the cloud parameter products derived by the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP). This validation effort has many facets including sensitivity analyses and comparisons to similar data or theoretical results with known accuracies. The FIRE provides cloud-truth data at particular points or along particular lines from surface and aircraft measurement systems. Relating these data to the larger, area-averaged ISCCP results requires intermediate steps using higher resolution satellite data analyses. Errors in the cloud products derived with a particular method can be determined by performing analyses of high resolution satellite data over the area surrounding the point or line measurement. This same analysis technique may then be used to derive cloud parameters over a larger area containing similar cloud fields. It is assumed that the uncertainties found for the small scale analyses are the same for the large scale so that the method has been calibrated for the particular cloud type; i.e., its accuracy is known. Differences between the large scale results using the ISCCP technique and the calibrated method can be computed and used to determine if any significant biases or rms errors occur in the ISCCP results. Selected ISCCP results are compared to cloud parameters derived using the hybrid bispectral threshold method over the FIRE IFO and extended observation areas
