    Cathodoluminescence investigations of GaAs thin layers

    AbstractIn this work, we report the theoretical results of cathodoluminescence (CL) for GaAs layer. The simulation of the CL excitation and intensity is developed using 2-D model based on the electron beam energy dissipation and taking into account the effects of carrier diffusion, internal absorption and the recombination process in the semiconductors.We have investigated the influence of the electron beam conditions (energy, current and beam diameter) and some physical parameters (absorption coefficient, gap energy) on the CL intensity. Results allow us particularly to predict the intensity evolution and shift of CL peak emitted near the fundamental energy gap as a function of the electron beam current and energy. A comparative study between simulated and experimental CL spectra at low temperature is realized

    Effect of dietary vitamin E supplementation on lipid and colour stability of chicken thigh meat

    Lipid and myoglobin oxidation are major causes of meat quality deterioration during storage of fresh chicken meat. Our objective is to determine the effects of dietary -tocopherol supplementation on lipid and colour stability of fresh chicken thigh meat exposed in a supermarket shopwindow or stored in a refrigerator. Chickens were fed with diets containing 25 (control), 100, 200 or 300 mg vitamin E/kg of food for 20 days before slaughtering. Peroxide value (PV) and oxidation products specific extinctions (K232 and K270), chosen as markers for oxidative deterioration of lipids, were lower in chicken meat from animals supplemented with 200 or 300 mg vitamin E than that of the control meat upon storage during 5 days in a shopwindow (p < 0.01) or 9 days in a refrigerator (p < 0.01). Vitamin E dietary supplementation (200 mg vitamin E/kg of food) reduced oxidation products formation in fresh thighs meat but had no significant impact on colour analysed by value redness (a*) measurements

    Molecular Evidence of Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus-Sicily Spreading on Tomato, Pepper and Bean in Tunisia

    Unusual symptoms including yellowing, stunting, curling, crumpling and plant size reduction were observed in tomato fields and green houses in Tunisia. These symptoms, generally associated with the Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) complex, have become increasingly common in recent years. In order to ascertain the molecular characteristics of Tunisian isolates by PCR, both the coat protein gene and the intergenic region of eleven isolates were amplified using specific primers, and sequenced. The PCR procedure also allowed the amplification of viral DNA fragments using a bean total DNA as a template. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that these Tunisian isolates clustered with a Sicilian isolate of TYLCSV-Sic. This is the first report of the involvement of this viral species in Phaseolus vulgaris disease

    Employee share ownership in a unionised duopoly

    Profit sharing schemes have been analysed assuming Cournot competition and decentralised wage negotiations, and it has been found that firms share profits in equilibrium. This paper analyses a different remuneration system: employee share ownership. We find that whether firms choose to share ownership or not depends on both the type of competition in the product market and the way in which workers organise to negotiate wages. If wage setting is decentralised, under duopolistic Cournot competition both firms share ownership. If wage setting is centralised, only one firm shares ownership if the degree to which goods are substitutes takes an intermediate value; otherwise, the two firms share ownership. In this case, if the union sets the same wage for all workers neither firm shares ownership. Therefore, centralised wage setting discourages share ownership.     Next generation sequencing in family with MNGIE syndrome associated to optic atrophy: Novel homozygous POLG mutation in the C-terminal sub-domain leading to mtDNA depletion

    Introduction Mitochondrial diseases are a group of disorders caused mainly by the impairment of the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation process, due to mutations either in the mitochondrial or nuclear genome. Among them, the mitochondrial neuro-gastrointestinal encephalo-myopathy (MNGIE) syndrome affects adolescents or young adults, and is mostly caused by TYMP mutations encoding a cytosolic thymidine phosphorylase (TP). Patients and methods The present study reports the molecular investigation by next-generation re-sequencing of 281 nuclear genes, encoding mitochondrial proteins, of consanguineous family including two individuals with MNGIE syndrome associated to optic atrophy. Bioinformatic analysis was also performed in addition to mtDNA deletion screening and mtDNA copy number quantification in blood of the two patients which were carried out by solf clipping program and qPCR respectively. Results Next-generation re-sequencing revealed a novel homozygous c.2391G > T POLG mutation (p.M797I) co-occurring with the hypomorphic c.1311A > G OPA1 variant (p.I437M). Analysis of the mitochondrial genome in the two patients disclosed mtDNA depletion in blood, but no deletion. Bio-informatics investigations supported the pathogenicity of the novel POLG mutation that is located in the C-terminal subdomain and might change POLG 3D structure, stability and function. Conclusion The novel homozygous p.M797I POLG mutation is responsible for MNGIE combined to optic atrophy and mtDNA depletion in the two patients

    The evolving SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in Africa: Insights from rapidly expanding genomic surveillance

    INTRODUCTION Investment in Africa over the past year with regard to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) sequencing has led to a massive increase in the number of sequences, which, to date, exceeds 100,000 sequences generated to track the pandemic on the continent. These sequences have profoundly affected how public health officials in Africa have navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. RATIONALE We demonstrate how the first 100,000 SARS-CoV-2 sequences from Africa have helped monitor the epidemic on the continent, how genomic surveillance expanded over the course of the pandemic, and how we adapted our sequencing methods to deal with an evolving virus. Finally, we also examine how viral lineages have spread across the continent in a phylogeographic framework to gain insights into the underlying temporal and spatial transmission dynamics for several variants of concern (VOCs). RESULTS Our results indicate that the number of countries in Africa that can sequence the virus within their own borders is growing and that this is coupled with a shorter turnaround time from the time of sampling to sequence submission. Ongoing evolution necessitated the continual updating of primer sets, and, as a result, eight primer sets were designed in tandem with viral evolution and used to ensure effective sequencing of the virus. The pandemic unfolded through multiple waves of infection that were each driven by distinct genetic lineages, with B.1-like ancestral strains associated with the first pandemic wave of infections in 2020. Successive waves on the continent were fueled by different VOCs, with Alpha and Beta cocirculating in distinct spatial patterns during the second wave and Delta and Omicron affecting the whole continent during the third and fourth waves, respectively. Phylogeographic reconstruction points toward distinct differences in viral importation and exportation patterns associated with the Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron variants and subvariants, when considering both Africa versus the rest of the world and viral dissemination within the continent. Our epidemiological and phylogenetic inferences therefore underscore the heterogeneous nature of the pandemic on the continent and highlight key insights and challenges, for instance, recognizing the limitations of low testing proportions. We also highlight the early warning capacity that genomic surveillance in Africa has had for the rest of the world with the detection of new lineages and variants, the most recent being the characterization of various Omicron subvariants. CONCLUSION Sustained investment for diagnostics and genomic surveillance in Africa is needed as the virus continues to evolve. This is important not only to help combat SARS-CoV-2 on the continent but also because it can be used as a platform to help address the many emerging and reemerging infectious disease threats in Africa. In particular, capacity building for local sequencing within countries or within the continent should be prioritized because this is generally associated with shorter turnaround times, providing the most benefit to local public health authorities tasked with pandemic response and mitigation and allowing for the fastest reaction to localized outbreaks. These investments are crucial for pandemic preparedness and response and will serve the health of the continent well into the 21st century

    Studies on financial participation show positive effects across several “performance” outcomes, yet given the potential to realign employee interests, distribute rewards, and improve commitment little is known about the ability of financial participation to reduce collective conflicts. Using French establishments, we explore the impact of profit sharing and employee share ownership schemes on various measures of conflict. Across various specifications, estimators, and time periods, financial participation reveals an ability to reduce some but not all forms of conflict. Employee share ownership seems especially effective in reducing a range of conflicts including the most extensive and costly forms
