A Framework for XML-based Integration of Data, Visualization and Analysis in a Biomedical Domain
Biomedical data are becoming increasingly complex and heterogeneous in nature. The data are stored in distributed information systems, using a variety of data models, and are processed by increasingly more complex tools that analyze and visualize them. We present in this paper our framework for integrating biomedical research data and tools into a unique Web front end. Our framework is applied to the University of Washington’s Human Brain Project. Specifically, we present solutions to four integration tasks: definition of complex mappings from relational sources to XML, distributed XQuery processing, generation of heterogeneous output formats, and the integration of heterogeneous data visualization and analysis tools
Neutral Hydrogen Mapping of Virgo Cluster Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies
A new installment of neutral hydrogen mappings of Blue Compact Dwarf
galaxies, as defined by optical morphology, in and near the Virgo cluster is
presented. The primary motivation was to search for outlying clouds of HI as
potential interactive triggers of the enhanced star formation, and therefore
the mapped galaxies were selected for large HI} mass, large optical diameter,
and large velocity profile width. Approximately half the sample proved to have
one or more small, low column density star-free companion clouds, either
detached or appearing as an appendage in our maps, at resolution of order 4
kpc. Comparison is made to a sample of similarly mapped field BCD galaxies
drawn from the literature; however, the Virgo cluster sample of mapped BCDs is
still too small for conclusive comparisons to be made.
We found, on the one hand, little or no evidence for ram pressure stripping
nor, on the other, for extremely extended low column density HI envelopes. The
HI rotation curves in most cases rise approximately linearly, and slowly, as

Dihydropyrimidine-thiones and clioquinol synergize to target beta-amyloid cellular pathologies through a metal-dependent mechanism
The lack of therapies for neurodegenerative diseases arises from our incomplete understanding of their underlying cellular toxicities and the limited number of predictive model systems. It is critical that we develop approaches to identify novel targets and lead compounds. Here, a phenotypic screen of yeast proteinopathy models identified dihydropyrimidine-thiones (DHPM-thiones) that selectively rescued the toxicity caused by β-amyloid (Aβ), the peptide implicated in Alzheimer’s disease. Rescue of Aβ toxicity by DHPM-thiones occurred through a metal-dependent mechanism of action. The bioactivity was distinct, however, from that of the 8-hydroxyquinoline clioquinol (CQ). These structurally dissimilar compounds strongly synergized at concentrations otherwise not competent to reduce toxicity. Cotreatment ameliorated Aβ toxicity by reducing Aβ levels and restoring functional vesicle trafficking. Notably, these low doses significantly reduced deleterious off-target effects caused by CQ on mitochondria at higher concentrations. Both single and combinatorial treatments also reduced death of neurons expressing Aβ in a nematode, indicating that DHPM-thiones target a conserved protective mechanism. Furthermore, this conserved activity suggests that expression of the Aβ peptide causes similar cellular pathologies from yeast to neurons. Our identification of a new cytoprotective scaffold that requires metal-binding underscores the critical role of metal phenomenology in mediating Aβ toxicity. Additionally, our findings demonstrate the valuable potential of synergistic compounds to enhance on-target activities, while mitigating deleterious off-target effects. The Morphologically Divided Redshift Distribution of Faint Galaxies
We have constructed a morphologically divided redshift distribution of faint
field galaxies using a statistically unbiased sample of 196 galaxies brighter
than I = 21.5 for which detailed morphological information (from the Hubble
Space Telescope) as well as ground-based spectroscopic redshifts are available.
Galaxies are classified into 3 rough morphological types according to their
visual appearance (E/S0s, Spirals, Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's), and redshift
distributions are constructed for each type. The most striking feature is the
abundance of low to moderate redshift Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's at I < 19.5. This
confirms that the faint end slope of the luminosity function (LF) is steep
(alpha < -1.4) for these objects. We also find that Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's are fairly
abundant at moderate redshifts, and this can be explained by strong luminosity
evolution. However, the normalization factor (or the number density) of the LF
of Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's is not much higher than that of the local LF of
Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's. Furthermore, as we go to fainter magnitudes, the abundance of
moderate to high redshift Irr/Pec's increases considerably. This cannot be
explained by strong luminosity evolution of the dwarf galaxy populations alone:
these Irr/Pec's are probably the progenitors of present day ellipticals and
spiral galaxies which are undergoing rapid star formation or merging with their
neighbors. On the other hand, the redshift distributions of E/S0s and spirals
are fairly consistent those expected from passive luminosity evolution, and are

A disrupted circumstellar torus inside eta Carinae's Homunculus Nebula
We present thermal infrared images of the bipolar nebula surrounding eta
Carinae at six wavelengths from 4.8 to 24.5 microns. These were obtained with
the MIRAC3 camera system at the Magellan Observatory. Our images reveal new
intricate structure in the bright core of the nebula, allowing us to
re-evaluate interpretations of morphology seen in images with lower resolution.
Complex structures in the core might not arise from a pair of overlapping rings
or a cool (110 K) and very massive dust torus, as has been suggested recently.
Instead, it seems more likely that the arcs and compact knots comprise a warm
(350 K) disrupted torus at the intersection of the larger polar lobes. Some of
the arcs appear to break out of the inner core region, and may be associated
with equatorial features seen in optical images. The torus could have been
disrupted by a post-eruption stellar wind, or by ejecta from the Great Eruption
itself if the torus existed before that event. Kinematic data are required to

The origin and prevention of pandemics.
Despite the fact that most emerging diseases stem from the transmission of pathogenic agents from animals to humans, the factors that mediate this process are still ill defined. What is known, however, is that the interface between humans and animals is of paramount importance in the process. This review will discuss the importance of the human-animal interface to the disease emergence process. We also provide an overview of factors that are believed to contribute to the origin and global spread of emerging infectious diseases and offer suggestions that may serve as future prevention strategies, such as social mobilization, public health education, behavioral change, and communication strategies. Because there exists no comprehensive global surveillance system to monitor zoonotic disease emergence, the intervention measures discussed herein may prove effective temporary alternatives
Spectroscopic applications and frequency locking of THz photomixing with distributed-Bragg-reflector diode lasers in low-temperature-grown GaAs
A compact, narrow-linewidth, tunable source of THz radiation has been developed for spectroscopy and other high-resolution applications. Distributed-Bragg-reflector (DBR) diode lasers at 850 nm are used to pump a low-temperature-grown GaAs photomixer. Resonant optical feedback is employed to stabilize the center frequencies and narrow the linewidths of the DBR lasers. The heterodyne linewidth full-width at half-maximum of two optically locked DBR lasers is 50 kHz on the 20 ms time scale and 2 MHz over 10 s; free-running DBR lasers have linewidths of 40 and 90 MHz on such time scales. This instrument has been used to obtain rotational spectra of acetonitrile (CH3CN) at 313 GHz. Detection limits of 1 × 10^–4 Hz^1/2 (noise/total power) have been achieved, with the noise floor dominated by the detector's noise equivalent power
