A proper management of thermal energy storage (TES) charging and discharging processes allows the final users to optimize the performance of TES systems. In this paper, an experimental research is carried out to study how the percentage of charge in a latent heat TES system (partial load operating conditions) influences the discharge process. Several charging and discharging processes were performed at a constant heat transfer fluid (HTF) mass flow rate of 0.5 kg/s and temperature of 155 °C and 105 °C, respectively. High density polyethylene (HDPE) with a total mass of 99.5 kg was used as phase change material (PCM) in a 0.154m3 storage tank based on the shelland-tube heat exchanger concept. Five different percentages of charge have been studied: 58 %, 73 %, 83 %, 92 %, and 97 % (baseline test). Results showed that by modifying the percentage of charge, the time required for the charging process was reduced between 97.2% and 68.8% in comparison to the baseline case. However, the energy accumulated was only reduced a maximum of 35.1% and a minimum of 5.2%, while the heat transfer rates during the first 60 min of discharge were reduced a maximum of 45.8% and a minimum of 6%. Therefore, partially charging the TES system not lower than 85% of its maximum energy capacity becomes a good option if the final application accepts a maximum decrease of discharging heat transfer rates of 10% if compared to the fully charged system. The work was partially funded by the Spanish government (ENE2015-64117-C5-1-R (MINECO/FEDER), ENE2015-64117-C5-3-R (MINECO/FEDER), and ULLE10-4E-1305). Considerations for applying logical reasoning to explain neural network outputs

    Get PDF
We discuss the impact of presenting explanations to people for Artificial Intelligence (AI) decisions powered by Neural Networks, according to three types of logical reasoning (inductive, deductive, and abductive). We start from examples in the existing literature on explaining artificial neural networks. We see that abductive reasoning is (unintentionally) the most commonly used as default in user testing for comparing the quality of explanation techniques. We discuss whether this may be because this reasoning type balances the technical challenges of generating the explanations, and the effectiveness of the explanations. Also, by illustrating how the original (abductive) explanation can be converted into the remaining two reasoning types we are able to identify considerations needed to support these kinds of transformations

The feasibility and cost-effectiveness of hydrogen-based microgrids in facilities, such as public buildings and small- and medium-sized enterprises, provided by photovoltaic (PV) plants and characterized by low electric demand during weekends, were investigated in this paper. Starting from the experience of the microgrid being built at the Renewable Energy Facility of Sardegna Ricerche (Italy), which, among various energy production and storage systems, includes a hydrogen storage system, a modeling of the hydrogen-based microgrid was developed. The model was used to analyze the expected performance of the microgrid considering different load profiles and equipment sizes. Finally, the microgrid cost-effectiveness was evaluated using a preliminary economic analysis. The results demonstrate that an effective design can be achieved with a PV system sized for an annual energy production 20% higher than the annual energy requested by the user and a hydrogen generator size 60% of the PV nominal power size. This configuration leads to a self-sufficiency rate of about 80% and, without public grants, a levelized cost of energy comparable with the cost of electricity in Italy can be achieved with a reduction of at least 25–40% of the current initial costs charged for the whole plant, depending on the load profile shape

Performance Assessment of Low-Temperature A-CAES (Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage) Plants

The widespread diffusion of renewable energy sources calls for the development of high-capacity energy storage systems as the A-CAES (Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage) systems. In this framework, low temperature (100°C–200°C) A-CAES (LT-ACAES) systems can assume a key role, avoiding some critical issues connected to the operation of high temperature ones. In this paper, two different LT-ACAES configurations are proposed. The two configurations are characterized by the same turbomachines and compressed air storage section, while differ in the TES section and its integration with the turbomachinery. In particular, the first configuration includes two separated cycles: the working fluid (air) cycle and the heat transfer fluid (HTF) cycle. Several heat exchangers connect the two cycles allowing to recover thermal energy from the compressors and to heat the compressed air at the turbine inlet. Two different HTFs were considered: air (case A) and thermal oil (case B). The second configuration is composed of only one cycle, where the operating fluid and the HTF are the same (air) and the TES section is composed of three different packed-bed thermal storage tanks (case C). The tanks directly recover the heat from the compressors and heat the air at each turbine inlet, avoiding the use of heat exchangers. The LT-ACAES systems were modelled and simulated using the ASPEN-Plus and the MATLAB-Simulink environments. The main aim of this study was the detailed analysis of the reciprocal influence between the turbomachinery and the TES system; furthermore, the performance evaluation of each plant was carried out assuming both on-design and off-design operating conditions. Finally, the different configurations were compared through the main performance parameters, such as the round-trip efficiency. A total power output of around 10 MW was set, leading to a TES tank volume ranging between 500 and 700 m3. The second configuration with three TES systems appears to be the most promising in terms of round-trip efficiency since the energy produced during the discharging phase is greater. In particular, the round-trip efficiency of the LT-ACAES ranges between 0.566 (case A) to 0.674 (case C). Although the second configuration assures the highest performance, the effect of operating at very high pressures inside the tanks should be carefully evaluated in terms of overall costs

Supporting High-Uncertainty Decisions through AI and Logic-Style Explanations

A common criteria for Explainable AI (XAI) is to support users in establishing appropriate trust in the AI - rejecting advice when it is incorrect, and accepting advice when it is correct. Previous findings suggest that explanations can cause an over-reliance on AI (overly accepting advice). Explanations that evoke appropriate trust are even more challenging for decision-making tasks that are difficult for humans and AI. For this reason, we study decision-making by non-experts in the high-uncertainty domain of stock trading. We compare the effectiveness of three different explanation styles (influenced by inductive, abductive, and deductive reasoning) and the role of AI confidence in terms of a) the users' reliance on the XAI interface elements (charts with indicators, AI prediction, explanation), b) the correctness of the decision (task performance), and c) the agreement with the AI's prediction. In contrast to previous work, we look at interactions between different aspects of decision-making, including AI correctness, and the combined effects of AI confidence and explanations styles. Our results show that specific explanation styles (abductive and deductive) improve the user's task performance in the case of high AI confidence compared to inductive explanations. In other words, these styles of explanations were able to invoke correct decisions (for both positive and negative decisions) when the system was certain. In such a condition, the agreement between the user's decision and the AI prediction confirms this finding, highlighting a significant agreement increase when the AI is correct. This suggests that both explanation styles are suitable for evoking appropriate trust in a confident AI. Our findings further indicate a need to consider AI confidence as a criterion for including or excluding explanations from AI interfaces. In addition, this paper highlights the importance of carefully selecting an explanation style according to the characteristics of the task and data

Numerical analysis of a latent heat thermal energy storage system under partial load operating conditions

One of the features that should be considered when designing a thermal energy storage (TES) system is its behaviour when subjected to non-continuous (partial loads) operating conditions. Indeed, the system performance can be sensibly affected by the partial charging and discharging processes. This topic is analysed in the present study by means of a two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical model implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. A latent heat TES system consisting of a vertical concentric tube heat exchanger is simulated to investigate the effect of different partial load operating conditions on the system behaviour. The effects of different heat transfer distributions and evolutions of the solid-liquid interface, are evaluated to identify the optimal management criteria of the TES systems. The results showed that partial load strategies allow to achieve a substantial reduction in the duration of the TES (up to 50%) process against a small decrease in stored energy (up 30%). The close correlation between the energy and the duration of the TES cycle is also evaluated during the discharge using detailed maps related to the melting fraction. These maps allow for the evaluation of the most efficient load conditions considering both charging and discharging processes to satisfy a specific energy demand.Simone Arena and Efisio Casti would like to thank the Department of Mechanical, Chemical and Materials Engineering of the University of Cagliari for their founding research grants. Numerical simulation of a finned-tube LHTES system: influence of the mushy zone constant on the phase change behaviour

    Get PDF
This work presents a numerical investigation on latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems during the phase change process. The numerical analysis, based on the apparent heat capacity formulation, was carried out through a two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical model developed by means of the COMSOL Multiphysics software. A thermal energy storage system based on the configuration of a double tube heat exchanger with finned surfaces was used as an experimental test case and the commercial paraffin RT35 was selected as phase change material (PCM). The influence of the heat transfer by convection, in particular the influence of the term describing the mushy zone in the momentum equation, was investigated during the whole charge and discharge processes. Three different values of the constant Amush, equals to 104, 106 and 108 were selected as well as two different values of the HTF volumetric flow rate were adopted in order to reproduce both laminar and turbulent flow regimes. The results are reported in terms of temperature, melting fraction and phases evolution during the whole melting and solidification processes, and compared to previous experimental tests carried out in the laboratories of the University of Lleida, Spain. A good agreement with the experimental results was obtained showing that the mushy zone constant has a significant influence on the interface shape and motion. The results show that large values of Amush determine an increase of the mushy region reducing the natural convection effects during the charge phase. Thus, the proper evaluation of the mushy zone constant allows providing a deeper understanding of the phase change behaviour, resulting in an important parameter for accurate modelling of LHTES systems. The work was partially funded by the Spanish government (ENE2015-64117-C5-1-R (MINECO/FEDER)). Experimental and numerical research activity on a packed bed TES system

This paper presents the results of experimental and numerical research activities on a packed bed sensible thermal energy storage (TES) system. The TES consists of a cylindrical steel tank filled with small alumina beads and crossed by air used as the heat transfer fluid. Experimental tests were carried out hile varying some operating parameters such as the mass flow rate, the inlet–outlet temperature thresholds and the aspect ratio (length over diameter). Numerical simulations were carried out using a one-dimensional model, specifically developed in the Matlab-Simulink environment and a 2D axisymmetric model based on the ANSYS-Fluent platform. Both models are based on a two-equation transient approach to calculate fluid and solid phase temperatures. Thermodynamic properties were considered to be temperature-dependent and, in the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model, variable porosity of the bed in the radial direction, thermal losses and the effective conductivity of the alumina beads were also considered. The simulation results of both models were compared to the experimental ones, showing good agreement. The one-dimensional model has the advantage of predicting the axial temperature distribution with a very low computational cost, but it does not allow calculation of the correct energy stored when the temperature distribution is strongly influenced by the wall. To overcome this problem a 2D CFD model was used in this work
