Statistical properties of dust far-infrared emission

The description of the statistical properties of dust emission gives important constraints on the physics of the interstellar medium but it is also a useful way to estimate the contamination of diffuse interstellar emission in the cases where it is considered a nuisance. The main goals of this analysis of the power spectrum and non-Gaussian properties of 100 micron dust emission are 1) to estimate the power spectrum of interstellar matter density in three dimensions, 2) to review and extend previous estimates of the cirrus noise due to dust emission and 3) to produce simulated dust emission maps that reproduce the observed statistical properties. The main results are the following. 1) The cirrus noise level as a function of brightness has been previously overestimated. It is found to be proportional to instead of ^1.5, where is the local average brightness at 100 micron. This scaling is in accordance with the fact that the brightness fluctuation level observed at a given angular scale on the sky is the sum of fluctuations of increasing amplitude with distance on the line of sight. 2) The spectral index of dust emission at scales between 5 arcmin and 12.5 degrees is =-2.9 on average but shows significant variations over the sky. Bright regions have systematically steeper power spectra than diffuse regions. 3) The skewness and kurtosis of brightness fluctuations is high, indicative of strong non-Gaussianity. 4) Based on our characterization of the 100 micron power spectrum we provide a prescription of the cirrus confusion noise as a function of wavelength and scale. 5) Finally we present a method based on a modification of Gaussian random fields to produce simulations of dust maps which reproduce the power spectrum and non-Gaussian properties of interstellar dust emission.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures. 'Femina lectissima'. Giulia, madre di Marco Antonio, tra descrizione e rappresentazione.

Il contributo ricostruisce il profilo biografico di Giulia, madre di Marco Antonio, e analizza la rappresentazione della matrona nella tradizione letteraria. Da un lato indaga come le particolari condizioni della tarda repubblica incisero nella promozione da parte di Giulia di iniziative innovative rispetto agli indirizzi del modello matronale e dall’altro lato studia come tali violazioni del mos maiorum furono valutate nella rappresentazione della madre di Marco Antonio da parte delle fonti coeve e posteriori. In questa prospettiva si analizzano le ragioni della legittimazione della matrona anche presso autori ostili a suo figlio e gli argomenti e le modalità della sua valorizzazione. The paper reconstructs the biography of Iulia, Mark Antony’s mother, and analyzes the representation of the matron in the literary tradition. Firstly, it investigates how the particular conditions of the late Republic influenced Iulia's realisation of innovative initiatives with respect to the feminine model and then studies how violations of the mos maiorum were evaluated in the representation of Mark Antony's mother by of the coeval and later sources. In this perspective the paper analyzes the reasons for the legitimacy of the matron even among authors who are hostile to her son and the issues and the methods of its valorization

FORMULA CERITA DETEKTIF DALAM TIGA NOVEL KARYA RUWI MEITA

Penelitian ini menganalisis formula cerita detektif yang dipakai dalam beberapa novel detektif yang ditulis oleh Ruwi Meita. Novel-novel tersebut adalah Misteri Patung Garam, Sex in Chatting dan Carmine. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan situasi, pola tindakan, tokoh, dan setting dalam ketiga novel karya Ruwi Meita yang sesuai dengan teori formula cerita detektif John G Cawelti. Menurut Cawelti formula cerita detektif dapat digambarkan sebagai cara konvensional mendefinisikan dan mengembangkan jenis situasi atau situasi-situasi tertentu, pola tindakan atau perkembangan situasi tersebut, kelompok tokoh tertentu dan hubungan antara mereka, dan pengaturan atau tipe pengaturan yang sesuai dengan tokoh dan tindakan. Hal ini untuk membuktikan bahwa apakah ketiga novel detektif tersebut memenuhi syarat hingga akhirnya disebut sebagai novel detektif. Data penelitian berupa informasi mengenai unit-unit teks novel Misteri Patung Garam, Sex in Chatting dan Carmine yang berkaitan dengan rumusan masalah yang mencakup formula cerita detektif. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif analisis. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik studi pustaka. Teknik pengolahan data menggunakan teknik analisis teori struktur A.J Greimas dan teknik analisis formula cerita detektif yang dikemukakan oleh Cawelti. Adapun hasil penelitian ini adalah (1) berdasarkan analisis struktur ketiga novel tersebut memiliki struktur aktan utama dan struktur aktan bawahan. Struktur aktan utama ditetapkan berdasarkan alur utama dan struktur aktan bawahan merupakan alur-alur cerita yang menyertai alur utama (2) berdasarkan analisis formula cerita, ketiga novel memenuhi formula cerita detektif yakni terdapat situasi, pola tindakan, tokoh, dan setting, dan masuk ke dalam cerita detektif klasik. Cerita detektif klasik mengacu pada formula cerita yang dipakai Edgar Allan Poe pada karyanya. Kata kunci: sastra populer, formula sastra, novel detektif, Ruwi Meita, situasi, pola tindakan. FORMULA CERITA DETEKTIF DALAM TIGA NOVEL KARYA RUWI MEITA Vio Rentina Fadilla 1602502 ABSTRACT This research tries to analyze the detective literary formulas used in several detective novels written by Ruwi Meita. These novels are Misteri Patung Garam, Sex in Chatting dan Carmine. This study aims to describe the situation, action patterns, characters, and settings in the three novels by Ruwi Meita which are in accordance with the theory of the detective story formula of John G. Cawelti. According to Cawelti, the detective story formula can be described as a conventional way of defining and developing certain types of situations or situations, patterns of action or development of these situations, certain groups of characters and the relationships between them, and arrangements or types of arrangements according to characters and actions. This is to prove whether the three detective novels meet the requirements to finally be called a detective novel. The research data is in the form of information about the text units Misteri Patung Garam, Sex in Chatting dan Carmine which are related to the formulation of the problem which includes the detective story formula. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis method. Data collection techniques using literature study techniques. The data processing technique used structural theory analysis technique A.J Greimas and the detective story formula analysis technique proposed by Cawelti. The results of this study are (1) based on the structural analysis of the three novels, the main actor structure and the subordinate actor structure. The main actor structure is determined based on the main plot and the subordinate actor structure is the story lines that accompany the main plot (2) based on the analysis of the story formula, the three novels fulfill the detective story formula, the situation, action patterns, characters, and settings and enter the classic detective story. Il caso di studio è rappresentato dall'azione di Giunia Seconda, moglie del triumviro Lepido, sorella del cesaricida Bruto, madre del congiurato Lepido, tra 44 e 30 a.C. Gli episodi presi in esame attestano un intervento di mediazione di Giunia in favore del marito Lepido assente da Roma; l'interferenza in ambito giuridico della donna in difesa degli interessi dei figli, minacciati dalla condanna del padre come hostis publicus; la partecipazione di Giunia alla congiura ordita dal figlio Marco Emilio Lepido contro Ottaviano

Management of expatriate medical assistance in Mozambique

This paper discusses how Mozambique coped with the health system needs in terms of specialized doctors since independence, in a troubled context of war, lack of financial resources and modifying settings of foreign aid. The Ministry of Health (MOH) managed to make up for its severe scarcity of specialist MDs especially through contracting expatriate technical assistance. Different scenarios, partnerships and contract schemes that have evolved since independence are briefly described, as well as self-reliance option possibility and implications. Lessons learned about donor initiatives aimed at contracting specialists from other developing countries are singled out. The issue of obtaining expertise and knowledge in the global market as cheap as possible is stressed, and realistic figures of cost planning are highlighted, as determined by the overall health system necessities and budget limitations
