    Relativistic quantum mechanics with trapped ions

    We consider the quantum simulation of relativistic quantum mechanics, as described by the Dirac equation and classical potentials, in trapped-ion systems. We concentrate on three problems of growing complexity. First, we study the bidimensional relativistic scattering of single Dirac particles by a linear potential. Furthermore, we explore the case of a Dirac particle in a magnetic field and its topological properties. Finally, we analyze the problem of two Dirac particles that are coupled by a controllable and confining potential. The latter interaction may be useful to study important phenomena as the confinement and asymptotic freedom of quarks.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    A Canvas for Establishing Global Software Development Collaborations

    Jufo-id:80620There is an increasing need and interest for organizations to collaborate with internal and external partners on a global scale for creating software-based products and services. Potential risks and different strategies need to be addressed when setting up such collaborations. Aspects such as cultural and social features, coordination, infrastructure, organizational change processes, or communication issues need to be con- sidered. Although there are already experiences available with respect to setting up global collaborations, they mainly focus on specific areas. It is dicult for companies to quickly assess if they have considered all rele- vant aspects. An overall aid that guides companies in systematically setting up global collaborations is widely missing. In this paper we present a study based on the snowballing method as a systematic approach to literature review. Based on this literature review and inputs from indus- try we investigated what aspects and practices need to be considered when establishing global software development collaborations and how to prioritize them. Based on that we created activity roadmaps that aggregate existing experiences. Reported experiences were structured into nine main aspects each containing extracted successful practices for set- ting up global software development collaborations. As a result we came up with an initial version of a canvas that is proposed as guidance for companies for setting up global collaborations in the software development domain.Peer reviewe

    Survival of eastern oysters \u3cem\u3eCrassostrea virginica\u3c/em\u3e from three lines following experimental challenge with bacterial pathogens

    Shellfish production is often affected by bacterial pathogens that cause high losses in hatcheries and nurseries. We evaluated the relative survival of larvae and juveniles of 3 Crassostrea virginica oyster lines: (1) GHP, a Rhode Island line; (2) NEHY, a line resistant to dermo and multinucleated sphere X diseases; and (3) FLOWERS, a line resistant to Roseovarius oyster disease, experimental challenge with Vibrio spp. isolates RE22 and RE101, causative agents of bacillary necrosis in Pacific oyster larvae, and the type strain of Roseovarius crassostreae, causative agent of Roseovarius oyster disease. All of the isolates were able to induce significant mortalities in oyster larvae and juveniles. Susceptibility to bacterial challenge in larvae was significantly higher at 25°C than at 20°C. Susceptibility decreased with oyster age; mean survival time ranged from 24 h in oyster larvae to more than 6 wk in juveniles. Significant differences in susceptibility to bacterial challenge were observed between oyster lines; NEHY was the most resistant line overall. Extracellular products (ECPs) from Vibrio sp. RE22 and R. crassostreae, as well as viable bacteria, were toxic to hemocytes from the 3 oyster lines, suggesting that ECPs are involved in pathogenesis and that external and mucosal barriers to infection are major contributors to resistance to bacterial challenge. These protocols will be useful in the elucidation of mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis and resistance to infection in oysters

    Since 2014, the European Bioanalysis Forum (EBF) organizes a Young Scientist Symposium. The meeting format was created to provide development opportunities for young scientists to engage in international discussions. Creating a peer community of young scientists has been a proven recipe to lower the threshold and promote engagement in this community of young talents. At the same time, the meetings are aimed at stimulating collaboration between the EBF and academia. The importance of capturing the right, most relevant information in order to avoid having too much information to handle is commonly accepted in industry and academia. But the question not yet sufficiently discussed by industry and academia is: What is the optimal instant of time to capture the relevant information along the process chain? With this paper the authors look into this issue by first analyzing two practical cases, from a transport and a manufacturing perspective. Afterwards, the elements of information captured are shortly elaborated and finally, constraints on the determination of the optimal instant of time for information capturing are elaborated in order to build a foundation for further research. This paper is a first step towards a methodological approach taking on these issues. A short conclusion and outlook summarizes the paper
