Rural communities compete with each other for firms, but their residents often commute large distances to work. Consequently, rural communities can benefit from economic growth occurring as much as 50 miles away. Data on county population growth shows that counties benefit from growth one or two counties away.Labor and Human Capital,

Our intent is to present citizens’ demand of health care services in Italy through a research structured in three studies. We used the Emotional Text Analysis (ETA) to lead the three s tudies: the first study regarded the citizens’expectations of the healthcare services, the second study regarded the point of view of the hospital personnel (medical doctors and nurses), the third regarded the point of view of the General Practitioners onthe health care services. These three studies are briefly presented. Data and outcome of an Assumed Similarity Test applied to all experimental subjects of the three studies in order to make a comparison among them, are also presented. The findings of the Emotional Text Analysis show that citizens, potential users of health services, center their requests on their individual subjectivity, and seek answers both to their suffering and to the feeling of alienation that characterizes the being sick feeling that makes them go to a medical doctor. For their part, general practitioners and hospital doctors immediately transform this subjective feeling in an objective medical diagnosis. Here a first gap emerges between patient’s demand and medical response, leavingthe possibility of an alliance on the diagnosis in order to jointly fight the disease. It has long been in place though a change that has expelled the patient also from sharing the diagnostic process, increasingly taken from self-centered dynamics within the healthcare system. This widens the gap between the request of the citizens and the response of the health services, that contributes to that conflictual growth to which defensive medicine gives a dysfunctional answer. The Assumed Similarity Test contributes to the interpretation of the health care dynamic identified in the Emotional Text Analysis; particularly in regard to the unfolding conflict, given by the hypothesis emerging from the data analysis, that a feeling of closeness for the hospital personnel goes along with an emotional stance of overpowering the othe

ABSTRACT Increasing number of agricultural land with function shifted into different sector other than agriculture has created its expansion to marginal land, i.e. coastal land. Coastal land are area susceptible to changes due to specific activities in that area. Therefore, coastal land exploitation for agricultural activities should be carried out in such a way that its exploitation do not damage coastal land environment. Results of the research indicate that efforts on establishing environmental-oriented sustainable agriculture had been already conducted, but it had not been maximal yet due to various impediments. Effort that government made was to set up reservation and cultivation areas within Regional Spatial Plan and Detailed Spatial Plan for South Coastal Area. The Regional Spatial Plan and Detailed Spatial Plan for South Coastal Area, however, did not confirm whether agricultural activities were allowed to be cond ucted in reservation area of coastal border. On the other hand, the community had not received sufficient knowledge on reservation and cultivation available in coastal area. In addition, government also issued policy on environmental-friendly irrigation system. However, it had not been maximally implemented yet due to limited fund. Positive impact on environment is increasing reforestation in coastal area. Negative impact imposed is the possibility of sea-water intrusion into land due to excessive ground water exploitation. Positive impact on public social condition is additional alternative income and more greater communality and higher mutual cooperation among peasants. Its negative impact is uncontrolled parceling of land, Agricultural implementation on coastal land, on one hand, supported Sustainable Coast Program in Yogyakarta Special Region Province in term of reforestation along coastal area. On the other hand, no deeper study was conducted viewed based on environmental aspect, especially in term of impact aspect. Keywords: coastal land agriculture -- environmental impac

Predicting the effect of climate change on biodiversity is a multifactorial problem that is complicated by potentially interactive effects with habitat properties and altered species interactions. In a microcosm experiment with communities of microalgae, we analysed whether the effect of rising temperature on diversity depended on the initial or the final temperature of the habitat, on the rate of change, on dispersal and on landscape heterogeneity. We also tested whether the response of species to temperature measured in monoculture allowed prediction of the composition of communities under rising temperature. We found that the final temperature of the habitat was the primary driver of diversity in our experimental communities. Species richness declined faster at higher temperatures. The negative effect of warming was not alleviated by a slower rate of warming or by dispersal among habitats and did not depend on the initial temperature. The response of evenness, however, did depend on the rate of change and on the initial temperature. Community composition was not predictable from monoculture assays, but higher fitness inequality (as seen by larger variance in growth rate among species in monoculture at higher temperatures) explained the faster loss of biodiversity with rising temperature

Expanding the therapeutic potential of Statins by means of nanotechnology enabled drug delivery systems

Statins are effective lipid lowering agents traditionally used for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Statins also exert a range of pleiotropic effects that make them attractive candidates for use in a wide range of disorders, in particular inflammatory and immune mediated conditions. However, the exploitation of such pleiotropic effects has been greatly hindered by poor bioavailability and adverse effects on muscles and the liver at higher doses. Nanotechnology is often suggested as the solution to this problem, as it enables an increased bioavailability of statins. Moreover, colloidal carriers can offer targeted drug delivery approaches that enable localised biological effects of statins, further reducing their potential for unwanted toxicity and adverse effects. This article reviews the available evidences for the increased potential of statin therapy when administered in nano-formulations such as nanocrystals, nanoparticles, liposomes, micelles and various nano-enabled devices. © 2014 Bentham Science Publishers

The research, carried out within a project research of national interest (PRIN) directed by archaeologist Professor Clementina Panella, has the purpose to detect the local culture of inhabitants of the center and the outskirts of Rome, paying attention to the archaeological remains and their cultural contribution. Three components of local culture emerged in this research; all of them are reported to a cultural context that people feel as organized by the pursuit of power and the enhancement of the mass media as factors that give notoriety and popularity then power. One of the three cultural repertoires, characterized by young participants and residents in the outskirts of Rome, enhances the archaeological remains as components of a fun culture. The fun, in combination with culture, is experienced as an effective alternative to the power and the pursuit of powe

Clinical characteristics and outcome of patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) uniformly defined as primary by a diagnostic work-up

Primary autoimmune hemolytic anemia (P-AIHA) is a relatively uncommon and hetereogeneous disease characterized by the destruction of red blood cells due to anti-erythrocyte autoantibodies (AeAbs) in the absence of an associated disease [1–3]. Secondary AHIA is frequently associated with lymphoproliferative diseases (LD) in particular, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, aggressive or indolent lymphomas, autoimmune disorders, malignancies other than lymphoid, and infections [1,2,4]. On the hypothetical assumption that in a significant proportion of cases defined as P-AIHA the clinical heterogeneity could be due to an ignored associated disease, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and outcome of patients with a diagnosis of P-AIHA based on a diagnostic work-up aimed at excluding or identifying an associated disease. ..

    The NASA Spitzer Space Telescope

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Spitzer Space Telescope (formerly the Space Infrared Telescope Facility) is the fourth and final facility in the Great Observatories Program, joining Hubble Space Telescope (1990), the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (1991–2000), and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory (1999). Spitzer, with a sensitivity that is almost three orders of magnitude greater than that of any previous ground-based and space-based infrared observatory, is expected to revolutionize our understanding of the creation of the universe, the formation and evolution of primitive galaxies, the origin of stars and planets, and the chemical evolution of the universe. This review presents a brief overview of the scientific objectives and history of infrared astronomy. We discuss Spitzer's expected role in infrared astronomy for the new millennium. We describe pertinent details of the design, construction, launch, in-orbit checkout, and operations of the observatory and summarize some science highlights from the first two and a half years of Spitzer operations. More information about Spitzer can be found at http://spitzer.caltech.edu/

Machine learning of microscopic ingredients for graphene oxide/cellulose interaction

Understanding the role of microscopic attributes in nanocomposites allows for a controlled and, therefore, acceleration in experimental system designs. In this work, we extracted the relevant parameters controlling the graphene oxide binding strength to cellulose by combining first-principles calculations and machine learning algorithms. We were able to classify the systems among two classes with higher and lower binding energies, which are well defined based on the isolated graphene oxide features. By a theoretical X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, we show the extraction of these relevant features. Additionally, we demonstrate the possibilities of a refined control within a machine learning regression between the binding energy values and the system's characteristics. Our work presents a guiding map to the control graphene oxide/cellulose interaction
