When Bio Meets Technology: Biohybrid Neural Interfaces.
The development of electronics capable of interfacing with the nervous system is a rapidly advancing field with applications in basic science and clinical translation. Devices containing arrays of electrodes can be used in the study of cells grown in culture or can be implanted into damaged or dysfunctional tissue to restore normal function. While devices are typically designed and used exclusively for one of these two purposes, there have been increasing efforts in developing implantable electrode arrays capable of housing cultured cells, referred to as biohybrid implants. Once implanted, the cells within these implants integrate into the tissue, serving as a mediator of the electrode-tissue interface. This biological component offers unique advantages to these implant designs, providing better tissue integration and potentially long-term stability. Herein, an overview of current research into biohybrid devices, as well as the historical background that led to their development are provided, based on the host anatomical location for which they are designed (CNS, PNS, or special senses). Finally, a summary of the key challenges of this technology and potential future research directions are presented. The authors acknowledge funding from EPSRC (EP/S009000/1 and DTP program), European

Comparison of 2-D Magnetic Designs of Selected Coil Configurations for the Next European Dipole (NED)
The Next European Dipole (NED) activity is developing a high-performance NbSn wire (aiming at a non-copper critical current density of 1500 A/mm2 at 4.2 K and 15 T), within the framework of the Coordinated Accelerator Research in Europe (CARE) project. This activity is expected to lead to the fabrication of a large aperture, high field dipole magnet. In preparation for this phase, a Working Group on Magnet Design and Optimization (MDO) has been established to propose an optimal design. Other parallel Work Packages are concentrating on relevant topics, such as quench propagation simulation, innovative insulation techniques, and heat transfer measurements. In a first stage, the MDO Working Group has selected a number of coil configurations to be studied, together with salient parameters and features to be considered during the evaluation: the field quality, the superconductor efficiency, the conductor peak field, the stored magnetic energy, the Lorentz Forces and the fabrication difficulties. 2-D magnetic calculations have been performed, and the results of this comparison between the different topologies are presented in this paper. The 2-D mechanical computations are ongoing and the final stage will be 3-D magnetic and mechanical studies
Microgeographic variations in Burkitt's lymphoma incidence correlate with differences in malnutrition, malaria and EpsteinâBarr virus
BACKGROUND: Endemic Burkitt\u27s lymphoma (eBL) has been associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and holoendemic Plasmodium falciparum malaria. But recent evidence suggests that other risk factors are involved.
METHODS: We hypothesised that selenoprotein glutathione peroxidase (GPx), a surrogate of nutritional status, is an important biomarker for eBL risk. We measured plasma GPx, anthropometric markers of malnutrition, EBV viral loads and malaria parasitaemia in children aged 1-9 years (n=258) from two locations in Nyanza Province, Kenya, with higher-than-expected and lower-than-expected incidence of eBL. The study participants were malaria asymptomatic children from the community.
RESULTS: Children from eBL high-incidence areas had significantly lower GPx levels, high EBV viral load and more evidence of chronic malnutrition than children from eBL low-incidence areas (all P\u3c0.001). Additionally, GPx levels were significantly lower in children with the highest EBV viral load and for those with P. falciparum infections (P=0.035 and P=0.004, respectively).
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that selenium deficiency may be a risk factor for eBL

Quantitative Insights into the Adsorption Structure of Diindeno[1,2-a;1âČ,2âČ-c]fluorene-5,10,15-trione (Truxenone) on a Cu(111) Surface Using X-ray Standing Waves
The adsorption structure of truxenone on Cu(111) was determined quantitatively using normal-incidence X-ray standing waves. The truxenone molecule was found to chemisorb on the surface, with all adsorption heights of the dominant species on the surface less than âŒ2.5 Ă
. The phenyl backbone of the molecule adsorbs mostly parallel to the underlying surface, with an adsorption height of 2.32 ± 0.08 Ă
. The C atoms bound to the carbonyl groups are located closer to the surface at 2.15 ± 0.10 Ă
, a similar adsorption height to that of the chemisorbed O species; however, these O species were found to adsorb at two different adsorption heights, 1.96 ± 0.08 and 2.15 ± 0.06 Ă
, at a ratio of 1:2, suggesting that on average, one O atom per adsorbed truxenone molecule interacts more strongly with the surface. The adsorption geometry determined herein is an important benchmark for future theoretical calculations concerning both the interaction with solid surfaces and the electronic properties of a molecule with electron-accepting properties for applications in organic electronic devices
