A checklist of Collembola of Tehran, with some new records from Iran
The present faunal study of springtails (Collembola) was conducted -in city of Tehran during 2013-2014. Samples of soil and leaf litters from parks, forests, gardens and green landscapes were collected using Berlese funnels. A total of 21 species of eight families were identified of which the species Hypogastrura ripperi (Gisin, 1952), Mesaphorura macrochaeta (Rusek, 1976) and Friesea claviseta (Axelson,1900) are newly recorded from Iran and six species are recorded from Tehran for the first time. This study rises the number of known collembolan species from Tehran to 71 species
Chopper Is Prodeath Regardless of the Effect of p75ICD on Sensitivity to Oxidative Stress
Background. The intracellular domain (ICD) of the neurotrophin receptor, p75NTR, exhibits variably pro- and antiapoptotic activity and has been implicated in neurodegenerative and neurodestructive disease. The molecular determinants of these cellular effects are not completely understood. The “Chopper” domain of p75ICD has been shown to be proapoptotic in in vitro systems in which p75ICD is proapoptotic. The effects of Chopper in systems in which p75ICD is antiapoptotic and, therefore, whether or not Chopper accounts for the variability of the cellular effects of p75ICD are not known. We therefore examined the effects of deletion of Chopper on the effects of p75ICD on in vitro cell culture systems in which p75ICD is pro- or antiapoptotic, respectively. Results. In HN33.11 murine neuroblastoma-hippocampal neuron hybrid cells, p75ICD is antiapoptotic. In NIH 3T3 cells, p75ICD is proapoptotic. In both cell lines deletion of the Chopper domain from p75ICD decreases the incidence of apoptosis resulting from oxidative stress. Thus, irrespective of the nature of the effects of p75ICD on the cell, its Chopper domain is proapoptotic. Conclusions. Expression of p75ICD can enhance or attenuate oxidative induction of apoptosis. Variability of the effects of p75ICD is not related to variability of the effects of its Chopper domain
Spherical similarity explorer for comparative case analysis
Comparative Case Analysis (CCA) is an important tool for criminal investigation and crime theory extraction. It analyzes the commonalities and differences between a collection of crime reports in order to understand crime patterns and identify abnormal cases. A big challenge of CCA is the data processing and exploration. Traditional manual approach can no longer cope with the increasing volume and complexity of the data. In this paper we introduce a novel visual analytics system, Spherical Similarity Explorer (SSE) that automates the data processing process and provides interactive visualizations to support the data exploration. We illustrate the use of the system with uses cases that involve real world application data and evaluate the system with criminal intelligence analysts
Caregivers knowledge, practices about childhood diarrhea and pneumonia and their perceptions of lady health worker program; findings from NIGRAAN implementation research project
Background: Despite 60% coverage by Lady Health Worker (LHW) Program, 30% of child deaths in Pakistan are still due to diarrhea and pneumonia. Caregivers are an important stakeholder yet there is little information on their case management practices and utilization of LHW Program. This study explored caregivers’ knowledge and practices about childhood diarrhea and pneumonia and utility of LHW services before and after a supportive supervision intervention.Methods: Cross sectional surveys were conducted with caregivers’ (mothers) pre and post intervention in project NIGRAAN. The intervention aimed to improve LHSs clinical and supervisory skills of lady health supervisors in order to improve LHW performance and ultimately impact caregiver practices. 4250 households were surveyed. Questionnaire was adapted from PDHS 2012-13. Differences between intervention and control groups were assessed using chi square test. P-value of Results: Comparing baseline to end line, there were significant overall improvements in caregivers’knowledge of loose motion (62 to 84%) and dehydration (12 to 18%) as signs and symptoms of childhood diarrhea. There was also a significant overall increase in caregivers’ knowledge of presenting features of pneumonia- i.e. fever (58 to 86%), cough (51 to 61%) and breathing problems (25 to 57%). The proportion of caregivers seeking advice for diarrhea from public sector significantly improved in intervention arm from 20% to 29%. Private sector however remained overall preferred choice for care seeking. There was significant overall improvement in awareness about LHWs functioning (93 to 99%) and household visits (91 to 98%). Actual care seeking from LHWs however stayed low (≤ 0.3%) Conclusion: In order to improve utility and expand coverage of LHW Program interventions aimed at providing supportive supervision have the potential to improve caregiver practices and utilization of available services and decrease childhood deaths due to preventable illnesses

Law Libraries and Laboratories: The Legacies of Langdell and His Metaphor
Law Librarians and others have often referred to Harvard Law School Dean C.C. Langdell’s statements that the law library is the lawyer’s laboratory. Professor Danner examines the context of what Langdell through his other writings, the educational environment at Harvard in the late nineteenth century, and the changing perceptions of university libraries generally. He then considers how the “laboratory metaphor” has been applied by librarians and legal scholars during the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. The article closes with thoughts on Langdell’s legacy for law librarians and the usefulness of the laboratory metaphor
Effect of Modified Atmosphere Packaging on Maintenance of Quality in Apple
An experiment was conducted to study the effect of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the quality of 'Red Delicious' and 'Golden Delicious' apples. Freshly harvested fruits were wiped clean and (25 μm thick) with varying number of perforations and stored in cardboard boxes at ambient temperature. 'Golden Delicious' showed higher incidence of bitter pit as compared to 'Red Delicious' apples. MAP proved effective in controlling the bitter pit disorder and in maintenance of quality. The least incidence of bitter pit in 'Golden Delicious' was recorded with T4 (30 x 2 mm perforation) and T3 (20 x 2 mm) treatment in 'Red Delicious' apples. However, MAP retained more freshness in 'Golden Delicious' than in 'Red Delicious'
Bound, virtual and resonance -matrix poles from the Schr\"odinger equation
A general method, which we call the potential -matrix pole method, is
developed for obtaining the -matrix pole parameters for bound, virtual and
resonant states based on numerical solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation.
This method is well-known for bound states. In this work we generalize it for
resonant and virtual states, although the corresponding solutions increase
exponentially when . Concrete calculations are performed for the
ground and the first excited states of , the resonance
states (, ), low-lying states of and
, and the subthreshold resonances in the proton-proton system. We
also demonstrate that in the case the broad resonances their energy and width
can be found from the fitting of the experimental phase shifts using the

Extending Memory Capacity in Consumer Devices with Emerging Non-Volatile Memory: An Experimental Study
The number and diversity of consumer devices are growing rapidly, alongside
their target applications' memory consumption. Unfortunately, DRAM scalability
is becoming a limiting factor to the available memory capacity in consumer
devices. As a potential solution, manufacturers have introduced emerging
non-volatile memories (NVMs) into the market, which can be used to increase the
memory capacity of consumer devices by augmenting or replacing DRAM. Since
entirely replacing DRAM with NVM in consumer devices imposes large system
integration and design challenges, recent works propose extending the total
main memory space available to applications by using NVM as swap space for
DRAM. However, no prior work analyzes the implications of enabling a real
NVM-based swap space in real consumer devices.
In this work, we provide the first analysis of the impact of extending the
main memory space of consumer devices using off-the-shelf NVMs. We extensively
examine system performance and energy consumption when the NVM device is used
as swap space for DRAM main memory to effectively extend the main memory
capacity. For our analyses, we equip real web-based Chromebook computers with
the Intel Optane SSD, which is a state-of-the-art low-latency NVM-based SSD
device. We compare the performance and energy consumption of interactive
workloads running on our Chromebook with NVM-based swap space, where the Intel
Optane SSD capacity is used as swap space to extend main memory capacity,
against two state-of-the-art systems: (i) a baseline system with double the
amount of DRAM than the system with the NVM-based swap space; and (ii) a system
where the Intel Optane SSD is naively replaced with a state-of-the-art (yet
slower) off-the-shelf NAND-flash-based SSD, which we use as a swap space of
equivalent size as the NVM-based swap space
