Improving activity recognition using a wearable barometric pressure sensor in mobility-impaired stroke patients.
© 2015 Massé et al.Background: Stroke survivors often suffer from mobility deficits. Current clinical evaluation methods, including questionnaires and motor function tests, cannot provide an objective measure of the patients mobility in daily life. Physical activity performance in daily-life can be assessed using unobtrusive monitoring, for example with a single sensor module fixed on the trunk. Existing approaches based on inertial sensors have limited performance, particularly in detecting transitions between different activities and postures, due to the inherent inter-patient variability of kinematic patterns. To overcome these limitations, one possibility is to use additional information from a barometric pressure (BP) sensor. Methods: Our study aims at integrating BP and inertial sensor data into an activity classifier in order to improve the activity (sitting, standing, walking, lying) recognition and the corresponding body elevation (during climbing stairs or when taking an elevator). Taking into account the trunk elevation changes during postural transitions (sit-to-stand, stand-to-sit), we devised an event-driven activity classifier based on fuzzy-logic. Data were acquired from 12 stroke patients with impaired mobility, using a trunk-worn inertial and BP sensor. Events, including walking and lying periods and potential postural transitions, were first extracted. These events were then fed into a double-stage hierarchical Fuzzy Inference System (H-FIS). The first stage processed the events to infer activities and the second stage improved activity recognition by applying behavioral constraints. Finally, the body elevation was estimated using a pattern-enhancing algorithm applied on BP. The patients were videotaped for reference. The performance of the algorithm was estimated using the Correct Classification Rate (CCR) and F-score. The BP-based classification approach was benchmarked against a previously-published fuzzy-logic classifier (FIS-IMU) and a conventional epoch-based classifier (EPOCH). Results: The algorithm performance for posture/activity detection, in terms of CCR was 90.4 %, with 3.3 % and 5.6 % improvements against FIS-IMU and EPOCH, respectively. The proposed classifier essentially benefits from a better recognition of standing activity (70.3 % versus 61.5 % [FIS-IMU] and 42.5 % [EPOCH]) with 98.2 % CCR for body elevation estimation. Conclusion: The monitoring and recognition of daily activities in mobility-impaired stoke patients can be significantly improved using a trunk-fixed sensor that integrates BP, inertial sensors, and an event-based activity classifier
Mining the ESO WFI and INT WFC archives for known Near Earth Asteroids. Mega-Precovery software
The ESO/MPG WFI and the INT WFC wide field archives comprising 330,000 images
were mined to search for serendipitous encounters of known Near Earth Asteroids
(NEAs) and Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs). A total of 152 asteroids (44
PHAs and 108 other NEAs) were identified using the PRECOVERY software, their
astrometry being measured on 761 images and sent to the Minor Planet Centre.
Both recoveries and precoveries were reported, including prolonged orbital arcs
for 18 precovered objects and 10 recoveries. We analyze all new opposition data
by comparing the orbits fitted before and after including our contributions. We
conclude the paper presenting Mega-Precovery, a new online service focused on
data mining of many instrument archives simultaneously for one or a few given
asteroids. A total of 28 instrument archives have been made available for
mining using this tool, adding together about 2.5 million images forming the

Coronagraphic observations of Si X 1430 nm acquired by DKIST/Cryo-NIRSP with methods for telluric absorption correction
We report commissioning observations of the Si X 1430 nm solar coronal line
observed coronagraphically with the Cryogenic Near-Infrared Spectropolarimeter
(Cryo-NIRSP) at the National Science Foundation's Daniel K. Inouye Solar
Telescope (DKIST). These are the first known spatially resolved observations of
this spectral line, which has strong potential as a coronal magnetic field
diagnostic. The observations target a complex active region located on the
solar northeast limb on 4 March 2022. We present a first analysis of this data,
which extracts the spectral line properties through a careful treatment of the
variable atmospheric transmission that is known to impact this spectral window.
Rastered images are created and compared with EUV observations from the SDO/AIA
instrument. A method for estimating the electron density from the Si X
observations is then demonstrated that makes use of the forbidden line's
density-sensitive emissivity and an emission-measure analysis of the SDO/AIA
bandpass observations. In addition, we derive an effective temperature and
non-thermal line width across the region. This study informs the calibration
approaches required for more routine observations of this promising diagnostic

739 observed NEAs and new 2-4m survey statistics within the EURONEAR network
We report follow-up observations of 477 program Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs)
using nine telescopes of the EURONEAR network having apertures between 0.3 and
4.2 m. Adding these NEAs to our previous results we now count 739 program NEAs
followed-up by the EURONEAR network since 2006. The targets were selected using
EURONEAR planning tools focusing on high priority objects. Analyzing the
resulting orbital improvements suggests astrometric follow-up is most important
days to weeks after discovery, with recovery at a new opposition also valuable.
Additionally we observed 40 survey fields spanning three nights covering 11 sq.
degrees near opposition, using the Wide Field Camera on the 2.5m Isaac Newton
Telescope (INT), resulting in 104 discovered main belt asteroids (MBAs) and
another 626 unknown one-night objects. These fields, plus program NEA fields
from the INT and from the wide field MOSAIC II camera on the Blanco 4m
telescope, generated around 12,000 observations of 2,000 minor planets (mostly
MBAs) observed in 34 square degrees. We identify Near Earth Object (NEO)
candidates among the unknown (single night) objects using three selection
criteria. Testing these criteria on the (known) program NEAs shows the best
selection methods are our epsilon-miu model which checks solar elongation and
sky motion and the MPC's NEO rating tool. Our new data show that on average 0.5
NEO candidates per square degree should be observable in a 2m-class survey (in
agreement with past results), while an average of 2.7 NEO candidates per square
degree should be observable in a 4m-class survey (although our Blanco
statistics were affected by clouds). At opposition just over 100 MBAs (1.6
unknown to every 1 known) per square degree are detectable to R=22 in a 2m
survey based on the INT data, while our two best ecliptic Blanco fields away
from opposition lead to 135 MBAs (2 unknown to every 1 known) to R=23.Comment: Published in Planetary and Space Sciences (Sep 2013
Earlier initiation of antiretroviral treatment coincides with an initial control of the HIV-1 sub-subtype F1 outbreak among men-having-sex-with-men in Flanders, Belgium
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) non-B subtype infections occurred in Belgium since the 1980s, mainly amongst migrants and heterosexuals, whereas subtype B predominated in men-having-sex-with-men (MSM). In the last decade, the diagnosis of F1 sub-subtype in particular has increased substantially, which prompted us to perform a detailed reconstruction of its epidemiological history. To this purpose, the Belgian AIDS Reference Laboratories collected HIV-1 pol sequences from all sub-subtype F1-infected patients for whom genotypic drug resistance testing was requested as part of routine clinical follow-up. This data was complemented with HIV-1 pol sequences from countries with a high burden of F1 infections or a potential role in the global origin of sub-subtype F1. The molecular epidemiology of the Belgian subtype F1 epidemic was investigated using Bayesian phylogenetic inference and transmission dynamics were characterized based on birth-death models. F1 sequences were retained from 297 patients diagnosed and linked to care in Belgium between 1988 and 2015. Phylogenetic inference indicated that among the 297 Belgian F1 sequences, 191 belonged to a monophyletic group that mainly contained sequences from people likely infected in Belgium (OR 26.67, 95% CI 9.59-74.15), diagnosed in Flanders (OR 7.28, 95% CI 4.23-12.53), diagnosed at a recent stage of infection (OR 7.19, 95% CI 2.88-17.95) or declared to be MSM (OR 34.8, 95% CI 16.0-75.6). Together with a Spanish clade, this Belgian clade was embedded in the genetic diversity of Brazilian subtype F1 strains and most probably emerged after one or only a few migration events from Brazil to the European continent before 2002. The origin of the Belgian outbreak was dated back to 2002 (95% higher posterior density 2000-2004) and birth-death models suggested that its extensive growth had been controlled (Re < 1) by 2012, coinciding with a time period where delay in antiretroviral treatment initiation substantially declined. In conclusion, phylogenetic reconstruction of the Belgian HIV-1 sub-subtype F1 epidemic illustrates the introduction and substantial dissemination of viral strains in a geographically restricted risk group that was most likely controlled by effective treatment as prevention.publishersversionpublishe

A robust walking detection algorithm using a single foot-worn inertial sensor: validation in real-life settings
Walking activity and gait parameters are considered among the most relevant mobility-related parameters. Currently, gait assessments have been mainly analyzed in laboratory or hospital settings, which only partially reflect usual performance (i.e., real world behavior). In this study, we aim to validate a robust walking detection algorithm using a single foot-worn inertial measurement unit (IMU) in real-life settings. We used a challenging dataset including 18 individuals performing free-living activities. A multi-sensor wearable system including pressure insoles, multiple IMUs, and infrared distance sensors (INDIP) was used as reference. Accurate walking detection was obtained, with sensitivity and specificity of 98 and 91% respectively. As robust walking detection is needed for ambulatory monitoring to complete the processing pipeline from raw recorded data to walking/mobility outcomes, a validated algorithm would pave the way for assessing patient performance and gait quality in real-world conditions
HIV-1 Infection in Cyprus, the Eastern Mediterranean European Frontier: A Densely Sampled Transmission Dynamics Analysis from 1986 to 2012
Since HIV-1 treatment is increasingly considered an effective preventionstrategy, it is important to study local HIV-1 epidemics to formulate tailored preventionpolicies. The prevalence of HIV-1 in Cyprus was historically low until 2005. To investigatethe shift in epidemiological trends, we studied the transmission dynamics of HIV-1 in Cyprususing a densely sampled Cypriot HIV-1 transmission cohort that included 85 percent ofHIV-1-infected individuals linked to clinical care between 1986 and 2012 based on detailedclinical, epidemiological, behavioral and HIV-1 genetic information. Subtyping andtransmission cluster reconstruction were performed using maximum likelihood and Bayesianmethods, and the transmission chain network was linked to the clinical, epidemiological andbehavioral data. The results reveal that for the main HIV-1 subtype A1 and B sub-epidemics,young and drug-naïve HIV-1-infected individuals in Cyprus are driving the dynamics of thelocal HIV-1 epidemic. The results of this study provide a better understanding of thedynamics of the HIV-1 infection in Cyprus, which may impact the development of preventionstrategies. Furthermore, this methodology for analyzing densely sampled transmissiondynamics is applicable to other geographic regions to implement effective HIV-1 preventionstrategies in local settings
