     “You needed to accept the situation”:Resilience of nursing home residents in times of COVID-19

    The restrictive measures taken by nursing homes during the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 (e.g., quarantine) may have been important stressors for which residents needed resilience to safeguard their well-being. Based on 30 semi-structured interviews with nursing home residents and close relatives, this study explored the lived experiences with respect to the restrictive measures. The data were collected in psychogeriatric, somatic, and mixed wards in The Netherlands and Flanders, Belgium. The restrictive measures were important stressors for residents, indicated by feelings of loneliness, sadness, and powerlessness. To deal with these measures, residents used various resources, which were determined by factors in the individual (e.g., health), interactional (e.g., possibilities for social interactions) and contextual (e.g. nursing home policy) domains. Because the lived experiences with respect to the restrictive measures seemed to relate to the resilience of nursing home residents, it is crucial to reinforce resources in the individual, interactional, and contextual domains

    Background: Both muscle fatigability and walking fatigability are prevalent in persons with MS (pwMS), but their associations remains unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the association of muscle strength and fatigability from both isometric and concentric protocols of three different muscle groups, and their association to walking capacity and walking fatigability.Methods: Twenty-seven pwMS and 13 Healthy Controls (HC) were included in this exploratory study. All par-ticipants performed a six-minute walking test (6MWT), where the distance walked index (DWI) was calculated to measure walking fatigability with a cut-off score of-10%. In three different muscle groups (knee extensors (KE), knee flexors (KF), ankle dorsiflexors (DF)), isometric and concentric muscle fatigability protocols (FIisometric or FIconcentric) were used to quantify maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and muscle fatigability. Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficients and linear regression models were calculated to establish the association be-tween muscle strength/fatigability and walking capacity/fatigability.Results: Higher MVCs values for all muscle groups were found in HC compared to pwMS (mainly those having walking fatigability) (p < 0.05). FIisometric of DF was lower in pwMS having walking fatigability compared to no walking fatigability. MVC of KE, KF and DF had a low to moderate association with walking capacity (range r = 0.52-0.56; p < 0.05) and walking fatigability in pwMS (range r-r(s): 0.39-0.50; p<0.05). FIconcentric of KF and DF, but not of KE, were associated with walking fatigability (r = 0.39 and rs = 0.47, respectively; p < 0.05). In contrast, FIisometric for all muscle groups were not related to walking capacity or walking fatigability.Conclusion: MVC of KE, KF and DF are associated with walking capacity and walking fatigability, while concentric (but not isometric) muscle fatigability of KF and DF are associated with walking fatigability

    Sedimentology, three-dimensional geobody reconstruction and carbon dioxide origin of pleistocene travertine deposits in the Ballık area (South-west Turkey)

    The Denizli Basin in the West Anatolian Extensional Province in western Turkey is well-known for its numerous travertine occurrences. A combined sedimentological, diagenetic and geochemical investigation is executed on the Ece and Faber travertines of the Ballık area, the largest travertine site in the Denizli Basin. The first aim of this study is the reconstruction of a three-dimensional geo-model in combination with a detailed sedimentological description from fabric to lithotype, lithofacies and geobody scale, with a focus on integrating pore-typing. The second aim involves the delineation of the CO2-origin of ancient travertine precipitating waters. Peloidal, phyto and dendritic lithotypes dominate the studied travertines and honeycomb and bacteriform shapes and encrusted bacterial or fungal filaments related to their fabrics suggest a microbial influence. The environment of travertine precipitation evolved from dominantly sub-aqueous, as represented by the sub-horizontal and biostromal reed travertine facies, to dominantly sub-aerial in a thin water film, resulting in the cascade, waterfall and biohermal reed travertine facies. A general progradation of the travertine mound is indicated by the occurrence of stacked waterfall travertines. This results in sigmoidal clinoforms inside a general mound boundary configuration. Strontium and oxygen-carbon isotope signatures of the travertines point to a mixing mechanism of palaeofluids with deeply originated, heavy carbon CO2 with lighter carbon CO2 of shallow origin. These deposits can thus be considered as endogenic travertines. Carbonates of the Lycian Nappes acted as main parent carbon source rocks. The relative contribution of the lighter carbon isotopes is most likely to have originated from organic matter or soil CO2. This study provides a unique three-dimensional insight into the Ballık travertine architecture that potentially can be used as an analogue for subsurface travertine reservoirs worldwide and illustrates the importance of the combined use of ?13C and 87Sr/86Sr signatures in the delineation of the CO2-origin of travertine precipitating waters. © 2015 The Authors.     Reliability and validity of the Dutch physical activity questionnaires for children (PAQ-C) and adolescents (PAQ-A)

    BACKGROUND: This study was designed to validate the Dutch Physical Activity Questionnaires for Children (PAQ-C) and Adolescents (PAQ-A). METHODS: After adjustment of the original Canadian PAQ-C and PAQ-A (i.e. translation/back-translation and evaluation by expert committee), content validity of both PAQs was assessed and calculated using item-level (I-CVI) and scale-level (S-CVI) content validity indexes. Inter-item and inter-rater reliability of 196 PAQ-C and 95 PAQ-A filled in by both children or adolescents and their parent, were evaluated. Inter-item reliability was calculated by Cronbach’s alpha (α) and inter-rater reliability was examined by percent observed agreement and weighted kappa (κ). Concurrent validity of PAQ-A was examined in a subsample of 28 obese and 16 normal-weight children by comparing it with concurrently measured physical activity using a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test for the assessment of peak oxygen uptake (VO(2) peak). RESULTS: For both PAQs, I-CVI ranged 0.67-1.00. S-CVI was 0.89 for PAQ-C and 0.90 for PAQ-A. A total of 192 PAQ-C and 94 PAQ-A were fully completed by both child and parent. Cronbach’s α was 0.777 for PAQ-C and 0.758 for PAQ-A. Percent agreement ranged 59.9-74.0% for PAQ-C and 51.1-77.7% for PAQ-A, and weighted κ ranged 0.48-0.69 for PAQ-C and 0.51-0.68 for PAQ-A. The correlation between total PAQ-A score and VO(2) peak – corrected for age, gender, height and weight – was 0.516 (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Both PAQs have an excellent content validity, an acceptable inter-item reliability and a moderate to good strength of inter-rater agreement. In addition, total PAQ-A score showed a moderate positive correlation with VO(2) peak. Both PAQs have an acceptable to good reliability and validity, however, further validity testing is recommended to provide a more complete assessment of both PAQs.
