Recent Overview of Solar Photocatalysis and Solar Photo-Fenton Processes for Wastewater Treatment
This literature research, although not exhaustive, gives perspective to solar-driven photocatalysis, such as solar photo-Fenton and TiO2 solar photocatalysis, reported in the literature for the degradation of aqueous organic pollutants. Parameters that influence the degradation and mineralization of organics like catalyst preparation, type and load of catalyst, catalyst phase, pH, applied potential, and type of organic pollutant are addressed. Such parameters may also affect the photoactivity of the catalysts used in the studied solar processes. Solar irradiation is a renewable, abundant, and pollution-free energy source for low-cost commercial applications. Therefore, these solar processes represent an environmentally friendly alternative mainly because the use of electricity can be decreased/avoided
Integrase strand-transfer inhibitors for treatment of early HIV infection : A case series
This study evaluated whether the interval from the first clinic visit until the start of antiretroviral treatment (ART) was correlated with common parameters of immunological recovery among patients with early HIV infection (EHI).We reviewed the medical records of patients with EHI who started ART using integrase strand-transfer inhibitors (ISTIs) within the first 6 months after diagnosis. Simple linear regression analyses were performed to determine whether the interval from the first visit to the start of ART was correlated with 1-year changes in CD4+ cell count, CD8+ cell count, CD4+ percentage, and CD4+/CD8+ ratio.Fifty-three patients with probable or definite EHI started ART using ISTIs between April 2014 and August 2016. Forty-nine patients completed 1 year of follow-up, including 48 men. The routes of HIV transmission were 1 case of needle sharing, 5 cases of heterosexual activity, and 43 cases of men who had sex with men. None of the immunological recovery parameters were correlated with time to the start of ART (CD4+ cell count: R = .12, P = .42; CD8+ cell count: R = .107, P = .5; CD4+ percentage: R = .14, P = .34; CD4+/CD8+ ratio: R = .23, P = .14). Furthermore, subgroup sensitivity analyses failed to detect significant correlations based on definite or probable diagnoses, treatment using elvitegravir or dolutegravir, or the time from HIV diagnosis to ART initiation. This series of EHI cases indicate that using ART with ISTI-based regimens is efficacious and well-tolerated. However, earlier initiation of treatment was not significantly correlated with common parameters of immunological recovery
Predicting the onset and persistence of episodes of depression in primary health care. The predictD-Spain study: Methodology
Background:
The effects of putative risk factors on the onset and/or persistence of depression remain unclear. We aim to develop comprehensive models to predict the onset and persistence of episodes of depression in primary care. Here we explain the general methodology of the predictD-Spain study and evaluate the reliability of the questionnaires used.
Methods:
This is a prospective cohort study. A systematic random sample of general practice attendees aged 18 to 75 has been recruited in seven Spanish provinces. Depression is being measured with the CIDI at baseline, and at 6, 12, 24 and 36 months. A set of individual, environmental, genetic, professional and organizational risk factors are to be assessed at each follow-up point. In a separate reliability study, a proportional random sample of 401 participants completed the test-retest (251 researcher-administered and 150 self-administered) between October 2005 and February 2006. We have also checked 118,398 items for data entry from a random sample of 480 patients stratified by province.
Results:
All items and questionnaires had good test-retest reliability for both methods of administration, except for the use of recreational drugs over the previous six months. Cronbach's alphas were good and their factorial analyses coherent for the three scales evaluated (social support from family and friends, dissatisfaction with paid work, and dissatisfaction with unpaid work). There were 191 (0.16%) data entry errors.
Conclusion:
The items and questionnaires were reliable and data quality control was excellent. When we eventually obtain our risk index for the onset and persistence of depression, we will be able to determine the individual risk of each patient evaluated in primary health car
Understanding the evolution and spread of chikungunya virus in the Americas using complete genome sequences
Local transmission of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) was first
detected in the Americas in December 2013, after which it spread
rapidly throughout the Caribbean islands and American mainland,
causing a major chikungunya fever epidemic. Previous
phylogenetic analysis of CHIKV from a limited number of
countries in the Americas suggests that an Asian genotype strain
was responsible, except in Brazil where both Asian and
East/Central/South African (ECSA) lineage strains were detected.
In this study, we sequenced thirty-three complete CHIKV genomes
from viruses isolated in 2014 from fourteen Caribbean islands,
the Bahamas and two mainland countries in the Americas.
Phylogenetic analyses confirmed that they all belonged to the
Asian genotype and clustered together with other Caribbean and
mainland sequences isolated during the American outbreak,
forming an 'Asian/American' lineage defined by two amino acid
substitutions, E2 V368A and 6K L20M, and divided into two
well-supported clades. This lineage is estimated to be evolving
at a mean rate of 5 x 10-4 substitutions per site per year (95%
higher probability density, 2.9-7.9 x 10-4) and to have arisen
from an ancestor introduced to the Caribbean (most likely from
Oceania) in about March 2013, 9 months prior to the first report
of CHIKV in the Americas. Estimation of evolutionary rates for
individual gene regions and selection analyses indicate that (in
contrast to the Indian Ocean Lineage that emerged from the ECSA
genotype followed by adaptive evolution and with a significantly
higher substitution rate) the evolutionary dynamics of the
Asian/American lineage are very similar to the rest of the Asian
genotype and natural selection does not appear to have played a
major role in its emergence. However, several codon sites with
evidence of positive selection were identified within the
non-structural regions of Asian genotype sequences outside of
the Asian/American lineage
Compilation of parameterized seismogenic sources in Iberia for the SHARE European-scale seismic source model.
Abstract: SHARE (Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe) is an EC-funded project (FP7) that aims to evaluate European seismic hazards using an integrated, standardized approach. In the context of SHARE, we are compiling a fully-parameterized active fault database for Iberia and the nearby offshore region. The principal goal of this initiative is for fault sources in the Iberian region to be represented in SHARE and incorporated into the source model that will be used to produce seismic hazard maps at the European scale. The SHARE project relies heavily on input from many regional experts throughout the Euro-Mediterranean region. At the SHARE regional meeting for Iberia, the 2010 Working Group on Iberian Seismogenic Sources (WGISS) was established; these researchers are contributing to this large effort by providing their data to the Iberian regional integrators in a standardized format. The development of the SHARE Iberian active fault database is occurring in parallel with IBERFAULT, another ongoing effort to compile a database of active faults in the Iberian region.
The SHARE Iberian active fault database synthesizes a wide range of geological and geophysical observations on active seismogenic sources, and incorporates existing compilations (e.g., Cabral, 1995; Silva et al., 2008), original data contributed directly from researchers, data compiled from the literature, parameters estimated using empirical and analytical relationships, and, where necessary, parameters derived using expert judgment. The Iberian seismogenic source model derived for SHARE will be the first regional-scale source model for Iberia that includes fault data and follows an internationally standardized approach (Basili et al., 2008; 2009). This model can be used in both seismic hazard and risk analyses and will be appropriate for use in Iberian- and European-scale assessments
Rare Variants in 48 Genes Account for 42% of Cases of Epilepsy With or Without Neurodevelopmental Delay in 246 Pediatric Patients
In order to characterize the genetic architecture of epilepsy in a pediatric population from the Iberian Peninsula (including the Canary Islands), we conducted targeted exome sequencing of 246 patients with infantile-onset seizures with or without neurodevelopmental delay. We detected 107 variants in 48 different genes, which were implicated in neuronal excitability, neurodevelopment, synaptic transmission, and metabolic pathways. In 104 cases (42%) we detected variant(s) that we classified as pathogenic or likely pathogenic. Of the 48 mutated genes, 32 were dominant, 8 recessive and 8 X-linked. Of the patients for whom family studies could be performed and in whom pathogenic variants were identified in dominant or X-linked genes, 82% carried de novo mutations. The involvement of small copy number variations (CNVs) is 9%. The use of progressively updated custom panels with high mean vertical coverage enabled establishment of a definitive diagnosis in a large proportion of cases (42%) and detection of CNVs (even duplications) with high fidelity. In 10.5% of patients we detected associations that are pending confirmation via functional and/or familial studies. Our findings had important consequences for the clinical management of the probands, since a large proportion of the cohort had been clinically misdiagnosed, and their families were subsequently able to avail of genetic counseling. In some cases, a more appropriate treatment was selected for the patient in question, or an inappropriate treatment discontinued. Our findings suggest the existence of modifier genes that may explain the incomplete penetrance of some epilepsy-related genes. We discuss possible reasons for non-diagnosis and future research directions. Further studies will be required to uncover the roles of structural variants, epimutations, and oligogenic inheritance in epilepsy, thereby providing a more complete molecular picture of this disease. In summary, given the broad phenotypic spectrum of most epilepsy-related genes, efficient genomic tools like the targeted exome sequencing panel described here are essential for early diagnosis and treatment, and should be implemented as first-tier diagnostic tools for children with epilepsy without a clear etiologic basis
Vanadium Inhalation in a Mouse Model for the Understanding of Air-Suspended Particle Systemic Repercussion
There is an increased concern about the health effects that air-suspended particles have on human health which have been dissected in animal models. Using CD-1 mouse, we explore the effects that vanadium inhalation produce in different tissues and organs. Our findings support the systemic effects of air pollution. In this paper, we describe our findings in different organs in our conditions and contrast our results with the literature
