Combining optical trapping in a microfluidic channel with simultaneous micro-Raman spectroscopy and motion detection.
Since their invention by Ashkin optical tweezers have demonstrated their ability and versatility as a non-invasive tool for micromanipulation. One of the most useful additions to the basic optical tweezers system is micro-Raman spectroscopy, which permits highly sensitive analysis of single cells or particles. We report on the development of a dual laser system combining two spatial light modulators to holographically manipulate multiple traps (at 1064nm) whilst undertaking Raman spectroscopy using a 532nm laser. We can thus simultaneously trap multiple particles and record their Raman spectra, without perturbing the trapping system. The dual beam system is built around micro-fluidic channels where crystallisation of calcium carbonate occurs on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads. The setup is designed to simulate at a microscopic level the reactions that occur on items in a dishwasher, where permanent filming of calcium carbonate on drinking glasses is a problem. Our system allows us to monitor crystal growth on trapped particles in which the Raman spectrum and changes in movement of the bead are recorded. Due to the expected low level of crystallisation on the bead surfaces this allows us to obtain results quickly and with high sensitivity. The long term goal is to study the development of filming on samples in-situ with the microfluidic system acting as a model dishwasher
Orbiter CCTV video signal noise analysis
The amount of steady state and transient noise which will couple to orbiter CCTV video signal wiring is predicted. The primary emphasis is on the interim system, however, some predictions are made concerning the operational system wiring in the cabin area. Noise sources considered are RF fields from on board transmitters, precipitation static, induced lightning currents, and induced noise from adjacent wiring. The most significant source is noise coupled to video circuits from associated circuits in common connectors. Video signal crosstalk is the primary cause of steady state interference, and mechanically switched control functions cause the largest induced transients
STEReO Connecting Capabilities
The Scalable Traffic Management for Emergency Response Operations (STEReO) project requires prototyping software to extend existing Airspace Operations Laboratory (AOL) software capabilities to support research in integrating drone flight activities within an emergency response airspace environment. This presentation encompassing existing technology as well as possible research for a workshop in February 2020
Dynamic Cloud-Based Data Collection System
A schema-less cloud-based distributed data collection system with dynamic validation and comprehensive system status and alerting provided a reconfigurable data collection system to solve evolving incoming data schemas. Successful adaptation of the dynamic validation was useful in conforming to the evolution of incoming data
The Invisible Voices Behind the Adult Education Movement
The Invisible Voices Behind the Adult Education Movement
Abstract
While one can easily find reference to the contributions of numerous male educators to the development of the field of Adult Education, the contributions of women are not as evident in the literature. Hugo (2015) points out that women were the prime movers in the development of adult education in the 20th century when the definition of adult education is broadened to include “women’s clubs, settlement house work, suffrage, and library development” (p. 20). Rose (2015) notes that women do the “grunt work” because they focus their efforts on immediate, practical remedies. While women’s efforts were valued during the tough times of the Depression, their accomplishments were disregarded as adult education became a profession tied to universities run by men (Welton, 2010). Rose (2015) states that not only did women play a role in the development of adult education, but that “they were integral to the development of adult education in the 20th century” (p. 4). This study explores the contributions of female educators whose leadership, power, and activism influenced the development of the field of adult education and their influence on the adult education arena in the 21st Century
