    A Trip to the Moon: Personalized Animated Movies for Self-reflection

    Self-tracking physiological and psychological data poses the challenge of presentation and interpretation. Insightful narratives for self-tracking data can motivate the user towards constructive self-reflection. One powerful form of narrative that engages audience across various culture and age groups is animated movies. We collected a week of self-reported mood and behavior data from each user and created in Unity a personalized animation based on their data. We evaluated the impact of their video in a randomized control trial with a non-personalized animated video as control. We found that personalized videos tend to be more emotionally engaging, encouraging greater and lengthier writing that indicated self-reflection about moods and behaviors, compared to non-personalized control videos

    Micromachined Millimetre-Wave Passive Components at 38 and 77 GHz

    A precision micro-fabrication technique has been developed for millimetre-wave components of air-filled three-dimensional structures, such as rectangular coaxial lines or waveguides. The devices are formed by bonding several layers of micromachining defined slices with a thickness of a few hundred micrometres. The slices are thickphotoresist SU8 defined by photolithography, or silicon with a pattern defined by deep reactive ion etching; both are coated with gold by evaporation. The process is simple, and low-cost, as compared with conventional precision metal machining, but yields mm-wave components with good performance. The components are light weight and truly airfilled with no dielectric support. This paper reviews several of these micromachined mm-wave components at 38 and 77 GHz for communications and radar applications

    A qualitative study of male students' experiences in counseling programs and male professional counselors' experiences post graduation

    Little is known about what attracts men to the counseling profession and what their experiences are in counseling programs and the profession post-graduation. This qualitative case study examines what attracts men to the counseling profession, recruitment strategies, and proposed recruitment strategies that could affect prospective male students. It also reveals the experiences of males in counseling programs and the counseling profession, after graduation. Findings indicated men are attracted to the field for various reasons. Most participants did not notice any specific recruitment strategies directed toward males. The participants shared ideas for future male recruitment. Findings also indicated there are benefits and challenges associated with being a gender minority in counseling programs and the profession. Implications for counselor preparation programs are presented.Includes bibliographical reference

    The response to and effects of microcomputers in the education sector:the introduction of an innovation in local authority secondary schools

    The study addresses the introduction of an innovation of new technology into a bureaucratic profession. The organisational setting is that of local authority secondary schools at a time at which microcomputers were being introduced in both the organisational core (for teaching) and its periphery (school administration). The research studies innovation-adopting organisations within their sectoral context; key actors influencing the innovation are identified at the levels of central government, local government and schools.A review of the literature on new technology and innovation (including educational innovation), and on schools as organisations in a changing environment leads to the development of the conceptual framework of the study using a resource dependency model within a cycle of the acquisition, allocation and utilisation of financial, physical and intangible resources. The research methodology is longitudinal and draws from both positivist and interpretive traditions. lt includes an initial census of the two hundred secondary schools in four local education authorities, a final survey of the same population, and four case studies, using both interview methods and documentation. Two modes of innovation are discerned. In respect of administrative use a rationalising, controlling mode is identified, with local education authorities developing standardised computer-assisted administrative systems for use in schools. In respect of curricular use, in contrast, teachers have been able to maintain an indeterminate occupational knowledge base, derived from an ideology of professionalism in respect of the classroom use of the technology. The mode of innovation in respect of curricular use has been one of learning and enabling. The resourcing policies of central and local government agencies affect the extent of use of the technology for teaching purposes, but the way in which it is used is determined within individual schools, where staff with relevant technical expertise significantly affect the course of the innovation

    Adult learning disabilities screening using an internet-administered instrument

    The article validates an Internet-administered version of Adult Learning Disabilities Screening (ALDS), e-ALDS, by comparing 122 adult education participants who completed the ALDS in paper-and-pencil vs. Internet formats. Adults with undiagnosed specific learning disabilities (SLD) often experience under- or unemployment, lack of independent living, low self-esteem, and emotional health problems. Thus, high societal and personal costs of failing to recognize and intervene with adults with SLD have been identified in numerous studies.
