    Stress-Free Two-Way Shape Memory Effect of Poly(ethylene glycol)/ Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) Semicrystalline Networks

    In this work, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/poly(epsilon- caprolactone) (PCL) semicrystalline networks were prepared by photo-cross-linking of methacrylated macromonomers with different molecular weights and in different proportions to obtain amphiphilic materials capable of displaying properly designed shape memory effects. Networks based on PCL 10 kDa and PEG 3 kDa showed suitable thermal and mechanical properties with well-separated crystallization and melting regions to achieve a self-standing two-way shape memory effect. Particularly, after the application of a specific thermomechanical history, these materials are capable of cyclically changing their shape between two configurations upon cooling-heating cycles in the absence of any external load applied. The effect of the composition of the networks and of the employed thermomechanical parameters, such as the applied strain and the actuation temperature, was investigated to shed light on the shape memory mechanism for this class of materials, which are considered promising for applications in the biomedical field and as reversible actuators for soft robotics

    Reversible Stress-Driven and Stress-Free Two-Way Shape Memory Effect in a Sol-Gel Crosslinked Polycaprolactone

    The two-way shape memory effect is the ability of a material to change its shape between two configurations upon application and removal of a stimulus, and, among shape memory polymers, it is featured only by few systems, such as semicrystalline networks. When studied under tensile conditions, it consists of elongation-contraction cycles along cooling and heating across the crystallization and melting region, typically under the application of a constant load. However, recent studies on crosslinked semicrystalline co-polymers demonstrate that also a completely stress-free, or self-sustained, two-way effect may be achieved through specific thermomechanical cycles. This effect is currently regarded with interest for the development of intrinsically reversible sensors and actuators, and it may also be displayed by simpler materials, as homopolymer-based semicrystalline networks. Only seldom articles investigate this possibility, therefore in this work the two-way shape memory behavior is studied on a poly(e-caprolactone) system, crosslinked by means of a sol-gel approach. The effect is studied both under stress-driven and stress-free condition, by applying properly set-up thermo-mechanical histories. The results allow to describe the effect as a function of temperature, to reveal the dependence on specific testing parameters and to compare the extent of the reversible strain variation under these two conditions

    Statistical properties of acoustic emission signals from metal cutting processes

    Acoustic Emission (AE) data from single point turning machining are analysed in this paper in order to gain a greater insight of the signal statistical properties for Tool Condition Monitoring (TCM) applications. A statistical analysis of the time series data amplitude and root mean square (RMS) value at various tool wear levels are performed, �nding that ageing features can be revealed in all cases from the observed experimental histograms. In particular, AE data amplitudes are shown to be distributed with a power-law behaviour above a cross-over value. An analytic model for the RMS values probability density function (pdf) is obtained resorting to the Jaynes' maximum entropy principle (MEp); novel technique of constraining the modelling function under few fractional moments, instead of a greater amount of ordinary moments, leads to well-tailored functions for experimental histograms.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

    Retentive device for intravesical drug delivery based on water-induced shape memory response of poly(vinyl alcohol): design concept and 4D printing feasibility

    The use of shape memory polymers exhibiting water-induced shape recovery at body temperature and water solubility was proposed for the development of indwelling devices for intravesical drug delivery. These could be administered via catheter in a suitable temporary shape, retained in the bladder for a programmed period of time by recovery of the original shape and eliminated with urine following dissolution/erosion. Hot melt extrusion and fused deposition modeling 3D printing were employed as the manufacturing techniques, the latter resulting in 4D printing because of the shape modifications undergone by the printed item over time. Pharmaceutical-grade poly(vinyl alcohol) was selected based on its hot-processability, availability in different molecular weights and on preliminary data showing water-induced shape memory behavior. Specimens having various original and temporary geometries as well as compositions, successfully obtained, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis as well as for fluid uptake, mass loss, shape recovery and release behavior. The samples exhibited the desired ability to recover the original shape, consistent in kinetics with the relevant thermo-mechanical properties, and concomitant prolonged release of a tracer. Although preliminary in scope, this study indicated the viability of the proposed approach to the design of retentive intravesical delivery systems

    Bilateral Cavitations of Ganglionic Eminence: A Fetal MR Imaging Sign of Halted Brain Development

    SUMMARY: Ganglionic eminence is the main transitory proliferative structure of the ventral telencephalon in human fetal brain and it contributes for at least 35% to the population of cortical interneurons; however data on the human GE anomalies are scarce. We report 5 fetal MR imaging observations with bilateral symmetric cavitations in their GE regions resembling an inverted open C shape and separating the GE itself form the deeper parenchyma. Imaging, neuropathology, and follow-up features suggested a malformative origin. All cases had in common characteristics of lissencephaly with agenesis or severe hypoplasia of corpus callosum of probable different genetic basis. From our preliminary observation, it seems that GE cavitations are part of conditions which are also accompanied by severe cerebral structure derangement

    Atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis : more than a simple association

    In the last decades a large amount of evidences linked rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to atherosclerosis. In particular, it is well established that RA patients have an increased risk of cardiovascular events that is not fully explained by smoke and other classic cardiovascular risk factors. In fact, RA and atherosclerosis may share several common pathomechanisms; inflammation undoubtedly plays a primary role in these settings, being involved in the appearance and progression of both diseases. In fact, proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-6, involved in the pathogenesis of RA, are also independently predictive of subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) events in these patients. In RA inflammation may alter HDL constituents and the concentration of LDL and HDL, thus facilitating atherosclerosis and CVD events. On the other hand, also the increase of oxidative processes, frequently observed in RA, may induce atherosclerosis. Interestingly some genetic polymorphisms associated with RA occurrence may enhance atherosclerosis, thus confirming the link between these diseases; however there are some polymorphisms associated with RA susceptibility which do not increase CVD risk; this behavior is a further confirmation that several mechanisms may influence atherosclerotic processes in RA. Moreover, atherosclerosis may be directly mediated also by underlying autoimmune processes, and indirectly by the occurrence of metabolic syndrome and impaired physical activity. Finally, the effects of RA therapies on cardiovascular system in general and on atherosclerosis in particular, are really wide and different. Therefore, RA treatment comprehends drugs that may either increase or reduce CVD. However, the starting point of every RA treatment is that disease control, or better remission, is the best way we have for the reduction of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in these patients

    Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus patients with articular involvement: a predictive marker for erosive disease?

    summary A small number of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients develops an erosive disease. Some studies have suggested an association between anti-cyclic citrullinated (anti-CCP) antibodies and this pattern of arthritis, but their exact significance in SLE patients remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of anti-CCP antibodies in SLE patients with different subsets of articular disease. Among 521 SLE patients followed in this center from 1976 to 2011, those with articular involvement (n=298) were selected to take part in the study. We searched for anti-CCP2 IgG antibodies in 198 patients using a commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (Immunoscan RA, Eurodiagnostica). In 174 patients the results for rheumatoid factor (RF) by nephelometry were retrospectively collected. C reactive protein (CRP) was obtained from clinical records. Patients were classified into 3 groups: erosive, non-erosive deforming, non-erosive non-deforming arthritis. Results of the different tests were compared among the groups. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Anti-CCP antibodies were significantly associated with erosive disease. We also found that RF positivity and increased CRP were more frequent in erosive arthritis and erosive or non-deforming arthritis, respectively, than in non-erosive non-deforming arthritis. This study supports the evidence that anti-CCP antibodies could be a useful marker of erosive disease in SLE patients. Increase in RF and CRP could be an additional means of identifying lupus patients with arthritis at risk of a worse prognosis

    Privacy by Design: From Technologies to Architectures (Position Paper)

    Existing work on privacy by design mostly focus on technologies rather than methodologies and on components rather than architectures. In this paper, we advocate the idea that privacy by design should also be addressed at the architectural level and be associated with suitable methodologies. Among other benefits, architectural descriptions enable a more systematic exploration of the design space. In addition, because privacy is intrinsically a complex notion that can be in tension with other requirements, we believe that formal methods should play a key role in this area. After presenting our position, we provide some hints on how our approach can turn into practice based on ongoing work on a privacy by design environment

    Active Subjects with Autoimmune Type 1 Diabetes Have Better Metabolic Profiles than Sedentary Controls

    Previous studies in humans with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and in non-obese diabetic mice have investigated the beneficial immunomodulatory potential of aerobic physical activity. Performing high volume of aerobic exercise may favorably regulate autoimmunity in diabetes. We tested whether increased physical activity is a self-sufficient positive factor in T1D subjects. During a 3-month observational period, active (6M; 40.5\ub16.1 years; BMI 24.5\ub12.1) and sedentary (4M, 3F; 35.9\ub18.9 years; BMI 25.7\ub13.8) T1D individuals on insulin pump therapy were studied for metabolic, inflammatory and autoimmune parameters. At baseline and at the end of a 3-month period, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), auto-antibodies (anti-GAD, anti-ZnT8, anti-IA2, ICA) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-\u3b1) were evaluated. During the 3rd month of the period, physically active T1D patients showed a significant reduction in the average glucose levels (-9%, p=0.025, by CGM) compared to the 1st-month values, and even their hyperglycemic episodes (>180mg/dL) diminished significantly (-24.2%, p=0.032 vs 1st month). Moreover, active T1D subjects exhibited an improved body composition with respect to sedentary controls. No significant changes were detected as to the autoimmune and inflammatory profiles. This study confirms the beneficial role of physical exercise associated with insulin pump therapy in order to improve metabolic control in individuals with T1D. These preliminary positive observations need to be challenged in a prolonged interventional follow-up

    Application-Layer Connector Synthesis

    International audienceThe heterogeneity characterizing the systems populating the Ubiquitous Computing environment prevents their seamless interoperability. Heterogeneous protocols may be willing to cooperate in order to reach some common goal even though they meet dynamically and do not have a priori knowledge of each other. Despite numerous e orts have been done in the literature, the automated and run-time interoperability is still an open challenge for such environment. We consider interoperability as the ability for two Networked Systems (NSs) to communicate and correctly coordinate to achieve their goal(s). In this chapter we report the main outcomes of our past and recent research on automatically achieving protocol interoperability via connector synthesis. We consider application-layer connectors by referring to two conceptually distinct notions of connector: coordinator and mediator. The former is used when the NSs to be connected are already able to communicate but they need to be speci cally coordinated in order to reach their goal(s). The latter goes a step forward representing a solution for both achieving correct coordination and enabling communication between highly heterogeneous NSs. In the past, most of the works in the literature described e orts to the automatic synthesis of coordinators while, in recent years the focus moved also to the automatic synthesis of mediators. Within the Connect project, by considering our past experience on automatic coordinator synthesis as a baseline, we propose a formal theory of mediators and a related method for automatically eliciting a way for the protocols to interoperate. The solution we propose is the automated synthesis of emerging mediating connectors (i.e., mediators for short)
