    Teaching Ethical and Social Issues in CS1 and CS2

    The discussion of whether ethical and social issues of computing should be explored in undergraduate computer science education has resulted in most academic institutions and educators agreeing that they are important topics that must be included. Further support has been provided by Curricula \u2791 [16], the CSAC/CSAB accreditation [2] and ImpactCS [12]. Many books [7, 8, 9, 10] and papers [6, 14] have discussed what topics should be covered and what techniques can be used either in a dedicated course or in modules across the curriculum. However, explicit detailed examples that have worked successfully, particularly in lower level computer science courses, are still rare. This paper will discuss several examples that have been successfully used in CS1 and CS2 at a medium-sized university

    Marine latitude/altitude OH distributions: Comparison of Pacific Ocean observations with models

    Reported here are tropical/subtropical Pacific basin OH observational data presented in a latitude/altitude geographical grid. They cover two seasons of the year (spring and fall) that reflect the timing of NASA's PEM-Tropics A (1996) and B (1999) field programs. Two different OH sensors were used to collect these data, and each instrument was mounted on a different aircraft platform (i.e., NASA's P-3B and DC-8). Collectively, these chemical snapshots of the central Pacific have revealed several interesting trends. Only modest decreases (factors of 2 to 3) were found in the levels of OH with increasing altitude (0-12 km). Similarly, only modest variations were found (factors of 1.5 to 3.5) when the data were examined as a function of latitude (30° N to 30° S). Using simultaneously recorded data for CO, O3, H2O, NO, and NMHCs, comparisons with current models were also carried out. For three out of four data subsets, the results revealed a high level of correspondence. On average, the box model results agreed with the observations within a factor of 1.5. The comparison with the three-dimensional model results was found to be only slightly worse. Overall, these results suggest that current model mechanisms capture the major photochemical processes controlling OH quite well and thus provide a reasonably good representation of OH levels for tropical marine environments. They also indicate that the two OH sensors employed during the PEM-Tropics B study generally saw similar OH levels when sampling a similar tropical marine environment. However, a modest altitude bias appears to exist between these instruments. More rigorous instrument intercomparison activity would therefore seem to be justified. Further comparisons of model predictions with observations are also recommended for nontropical marine environments as well as those involving highly elevated levels of reactive non-methane hydrocarbons.     Effect of self-assembling peptide, chondrogenic factors, and bone marrow-derived stromal cells on osteochondral repair

    Objective The goal of this study was to test the ability of an injectable self-assembling peptide (KLD) hydrogel with or without chondrogenic factors (CF) and allogeneic bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) to stimulate cartilage regeneration in a full-thickness, critically-sized, rabbit cartilage defect model in vivo. We used CF treatments to test the hypotheses that CF would stimulate chondrogenesis and matrix production by cells migrating into acellular KLD (KLD + CF) or by BMSCs delivered in KLD (KLD + CF + BMSCs). Design Three groups were tested against contralateral untreated controls: KLD, KLD + CF, and KLD + CF +BMSCs, n = 6–7. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), dexamethasone, and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) were used as CF pre-mixed with KLD and BMSCs before injection. Evaluations included gross, histological, immunohistochemical and radiographic analyses. Results KLD without CF or BMSCs showed the greatest repair after 12 weeks with significantly higher Safranin-O, collagen II immunostaining, and cumulative histology scores than untreated contralateral controls. KLD + CF resulted in significantly higher aggrecan immunostaining than untreated contralateral controls. Including allogeneic BMSCs + CF markedly reduced the quality of repair and increased osteophyte formation compared to KLD-alone. Conclusions These data show that KLD can fill full-thickness osteochondral defects in situ and improve cartilage repair as shown by Safranin-O, collagen II immunostaining, and cumulative histology. In this small animal model, the full-thickness critically-sized defect provided access to the marrow, similar in concept to abrasion arthroplasty or spongialization in large animal models, and suggests that combining KLD with these techniques may improve current practice.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (U.S.) Grant EB003805)American Society for Engineering Education.     Bringing Oversight Review in Line with Online Research

    The purpose of an oversight structure or institution is to protect human subjects from research that would pose unacceptable dangers or deny human rights. Review boards provide an independent assessment of research proposals. This additional level of scrutiny is meant to provide an additional level of protection for human subjects. However, oversight of human subject research, as currently carried out in the bureaucratic, rule-based, clinically-biased American system, is too cumbersome with regard to online research. In addition, it is not conducive to the training of ethical Internet researchers. Internet research differs from traditional human subject research in many ways, and the oversight rules governing traditional research do not easily relate to the complexities of conducting research online. Online researchers do not oppose the foundational principles of non-maleficence (avoiding harm) and autonomy, nor do they reject the ideals of informed consent and confidentiality, nevertheless, they face practical dilemmas in attempting to follow these principles and apply these ideals in the various Internet domains. The current oversight system is ill-equipped to assist. A conservative response to this problem of fit might entail adjustments to the oversight system that, in the case of the American system, would entail modifications to the Common Rule and Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). I will argue in this paper, instead, that re-structuring is needed to allow more oversight authority for Internet researchers. I will utilize Consequentialism and Virtue Ethics in making this case

    In this essay we argue that the current social and ethical structure in the Open Source Software (OSS) Community stem from its roots in academia. The individual developers experience a level of autonomy similar to that of a faculty member. Furthermore, we assert that the Open Source Software Community\u27s social structure demands benevolent leadership. We argue that it is difficult to pass off low quality open source software as high quality software and that the Open Source development model offers strong accountability. Finally, we argue that Open Source Software introduces ethical challenges for universities and the software development community

    Which executive functioning deficits are associated with AD/HD, ODD/CD and comorbid AD/HD+ODD/CD?

    Item does not contain fulltextThis study investigated (1) whether attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is associated with executive functioning (EF) deficits while controlling for oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD), (2) whether ODD/CD is associated with EF deficits while controlling for AD/HD, and (3)~whether a combination of AD/HD and ODD/CD is associated with EF deficits (and the possibility that there is no association between EF deficits and AD/HD or ODD/CD in isolation). Subjects were 99~children ages 6–12 years. Three putative domains of EF were investigated using well-validated tests: verbal fluency, working memory, and planning. Independent of ODD/CD, AD/HD was associated with deficits in planning and working memory, but not in verbal fluency. Only teacher rated AD/HD, but not parent rated AD/HD, significantly contributed to the prediction of EF task performance. No EF deficits were associated with ODD/CD. The presence of comorbid AD/HD accounts for the EF deficits in children with comorbid AD/HD+ODD/CD. These results suggest that EF deficits are unique to AD/HD and support the model proposed by R. A. Barkley (1997).17 p

    "Yay, Another Lady Starting a Log!": Women's Fitness Doping and the Gendered Space of an Online Doping Forum

    This study aims to investigate and dissect the meanings attached to women’s use of performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs), how fitness doping can be understood in terms of gender and spatiality, and what implications this has for women’s communicative engagement with one another within an online forum. The study is based on a netnographic and qualitative methodology. Theoretically, it considers a women’s online forum for PIEDs and analyzes it as a community of practice (CofP) and a spatiality in which gender, bodies, and side effects are discussed and negotiated. The results show that although the women’s forum provides a space for women to share their own unique experiences, there is a limit to the extent to which the discussions mirror the experiences and experimentations of women. Instead, discussions are often dominated by men’s voices/experiences. This has two main implications. Firstly, the prevalence of men’s voices can block the development of a women’s CofP. Symbolically, men engage in a sort of cultural manspreading by encroaching on the women’s forum space. Secondly, it has implications for women’s PIED use and use practices. Women seeking out advice or the experiences of other women must navigate through and around men’s contributions

    Linkage analysis of HLA and candidate genes for celiac disease in a North American family-based study

    BACKGROUND: Celiac disease has a strong genetic association with HLA. However, this association only explains approximately half of the sibling risk for celiac disease. Therefore, other genes must be involved in susceptibility to celiac disease. We tested for linkage to genes or loci that could play a role in pathogenesis of celiac disease. METHODS: DNA samples, from members of 62 families with a minimum of two cases of celiac disease, were genotyped at HLA and at 13 candidate gene regions, including CD4, CTLA4, four T-cell receptor regions, and 7 insulin-dependent diabetes regions. Two-point and multipoint heterogeneity LOD (HLOD) scores were examined. RESULTS: The highest two-point and multipoint HLOD scores were obtained in the HLA region, with a two-point HLOD of 3.1 and a multipoint HLOD of 5.0. For the candidate genes, we found no evidence for linkage. CONCLUSIONS: Our significant evidence of linkage to HLA replicates the known linkage and association of HLA with CD. In our families, likely candidate genes did not explain the susceptibility to celiac disease

    Millicurrent stimulation of human articular chondrocytes cultivated in a collagen type-I gel and of human osteochondral explants

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Here we investigate the effect of millicurrent treatment on human chondrocytes cultivated in a collagen gel matrix and on human osteochondral explants.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Human chondrocytes from osteoarthritic knee joints were enzymatically released and transferred into a collagen type-I gel. Osteochondral explants and cell-seeded gel samples were cultivated in-vitro for three weeks. Samples of the verum groups were stimulated every two days by millicurrent treatment (3 mA, sinusoidal signal of 312 Hz amplitude modulated by two super-imposed signals of 0.28 Hz), while control samples remained unaffected. After recovery, collagen type-I, type-II, aggrecan, interleukin-1β, IL-6, TNFα and MMP13 were examined by immunohistochemistry and by real time PCR.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>With regard to the immunostainings 3 D gel samples and osteochondral explants did not show any differences between treatment and control group. The expression of all investigated genes of the 3 D gel samples was elevated following millicurrent treatment. While osteochondral explant gene expression of col-I, col-II and Il-1β was nearly unaffected, aggrecan gene expression was elevated. Following millicurrent treatment, IL-6, TNFα, and MMP13 gene expression decreased. In general, the standard deviations of the gene expression data were high, resulting in rarely significant results.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We conclude that millicurrent stimulation of human osteoarthritic chondrocytes cultivated in a 3 D collagen gel and of osteochondral explants directly influences cell metabolism.</p
