    Key parameters in thermally conductive polymer composites

    The thermal conductivity of polymer composites is measured for several tubular carbon nanofillers (nanotubes, fibres, and whiskers). The highest enhancement in the thermal conductivity is observed for functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (90% enhancement for 1 vol. %) and Pyrograf carbon fibres (80%). We model the experimental data using an effective thermal medium theory and determine the thermal interface resistance (RK ) at the filler-matrix interface. Our results show that the geometry of the nanofibres and the interface resistance are two key factors in engineering heat transport in a composite

    The frequency of transforming growth factor-TGF-B gene polymorphisms in a normal southern Iranian population

    Several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the transforming growth factor-β1 gene (TGFB1) have been reported. Determination of TGFB1 SNPs allele frequencies in different ethnic groups is useful for both population genetic analyses and association studies with immunological diseases. In this study, five SNPs of TGFB1 were determined in 325 individuals from a normal southern Iranian population using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. This population was in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for these SNPs. Of the 12 constructed haplotypes, GTCGC and GCTGC were the most frequent in the normal southern Iranian population. Comparison of genotype and allele frequencies of TGFB SNPs between Iranian and other populations (meta-analysis) showed significant differences, and in this case the southern Iranian population seems genetically similar to Caucasoid populations. However, neighbour-joining tree using Nei's genetic distances based on TGF-β1 allele frequencies showed that southern Iranians are genetically far from people from the USA, Germany, UK, Denmark and the Czech Republic. In conclusion, this is the first report of the distribution of TGFB1 SNPs in an Iranian population and the results of this investigation may provide useful information for both population genetic and disease studies. © 2008 The Authors

    Detecting unilateral phrenic paralysis by acoustic respiratory analysis

    The consequences of phrenic nerve paralysis vary from a considerable reduction in respiratory function to an apparently normal state. Acoustic analysis of lung sound intensity (LSI) could be an indirect non-invasive measurement of respiratory muscle function, comparing activity on the two sides of the thoracic cage. Lung sounds and airflow were recorded in ten males with unilateral phrenic paralysis and ten healthy subjects (5 men/5 women), during progressive increasing airflow maneuvers. Subjects were in sitting position and two acoustic sensors were placed on their back, on the left and right sides. LSI was determined from 1.2 to 2.4 L/s between 70 and 2000 Hz. LSI was significantly greater on the normal (19.3±4.0 dB) than the affected (5.7±3.5 dB) side in all patients (p = 0.0002), differences ranging from 9.9 to 21.3 dB (13.5±3.5 dB). In the healthy subjects, the LSI was similar on both left (15.1±6.3 dB) and right (17.4±5.7 dB) sides (p = 0.2730), differences ranging from 0.4 to 4.6 dB (2.3±1.6 dB). There was a positive linear relationship between the LSI and the airflow, with clear differences between the slope of patients (about 5 dB/L/s) and healthy subjects (about 10 dB/L/s). Furthermore, the LSI from the affected side of patients was close to the background noise level, at low airflows. As the airflow increases, the LSI from the affected side did also increase, but never reached the levels seen in healthy subjects. Moreover, the difference in LSI between healthy and paralyzed sides was higher in patients with lower FEV1 (%). The acoustic analysis of LSI is a relevant non-invasive technique to assess respiratory function. This method could reinforce the reliability of the diagnosis of unilateral phrenic paralysis, as well as the monitoring of these patients.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Anti‑algal activity of the 12‑5‑12 gemini surfactant results from its impact on the photosynthetic apparatus

    A rapid amplification of algal population has a negative impact on the environment and the global economy. Thus, control of algal proliferation is an important issue and effective procedures which reduce algal blooms and control algal fouling are highly desired. Gemini surfactants are considered to have a low environmental impact, therefore they seem to be a promising group of detergents which could reduce algal blooms in water systems. Furthermore, due to their emulsifying properties they could replace algaecides added to antifouling paints and decrease algae adhesion to various surfaces. In this study the toxic effect of the 12-5-12 gemini surfactant was investigated on Chlorella cells and close attention was paid to a potential mechanism of its action. At the high cell density (10.05 × 107 cells/mL) a dose-dependent cell death was found and the IC50 value was reached at the concentration of 19.6 µmol/L after 72-h exposure to the surfactant. The decrease in chlorophyll autofluorescence shows that the photosynthetic apparatus seems to be the target of the tested compound. The presented studies indicate that gemini surfactants could effectively reduce algal blooms in water systems, and if added to paints, they could decrease algal growth on external building walls or other water immersed surfaces

    EVALUATION OF BACITRACIN DISK FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF GROUP ‘A’ BETA-HEMOLYTIC STREPTOCOCCI

    A total of 711 beta-hemolytic streptococci were isolated from throat cultures of patients during 1970-73. These strains were grouped in parallel by the precipitin and bacitracin paper disk method. The former method was estab­lished as the standard by which the bacitracin technique was compared. The difference in results was about 5.67%. The greatest error (5.4%) was seen with non-group A strains being sensitive to bacitracin. In spite of this, it was shown to be advantageous to use the bacitracin disk for primary isolation from throat cultures rather than to consider all beta-hemolytic streptococci isolated as group A, which would give a magnitude of error around 16%

    This study was undertaken to determine the antibiotic sensitivity of 686 strains of hemolytic streptococci isolated at the School of Public Health, Divi­sion of Streptococcal Studies, to five antibiotics in vitro. All of the strains were sensitive to penicillin, erythromycin, chloramphenicol and ampicillin. 27 (4%) of the strains, were resistant to tetracyclin. The clinical implications of this study, particularly in the light of information from other areas, emphasize the fact that, if the blind treatment of acute upper respiratory tract infection with tetracycline were ever justified it has certainly ceased to be so
