    Generalization of the NpNnN_pN_n Scheme and the Structure of the Valence Space

    The NpNnN_pN_n scheme, which has been extensively applied to even-even nuclei, is found to be a very good benchmark for odd-even, even-odd, and doubly-odd nuclei as well. There are no apparent shifts in the correlations for these four classes of nuclei. The compact correlations highlight the deviant behavior of the Z=78 nuclei, are used to deduce effective valence proton numbers near Z=64, and to study the evolution of the Z=64 subshell gap.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Transition from the Seniority to the Anharmonic Vibrator Regime in Nuclei

    A recent analysis of experimental energy systematics suggests that all collective nuclei fall into one of three classes -- seniority, anharmonic vibrational, or rotational -- with sharp phase transitions between them. We investigate the transition from the seniority to the anharmonic vibrator regime within a shell model framework involving a single large j-orbit. The calculations qualitatively reproduce the observed transitional behavior, both for U(5) like and O(6) like nuclei.     Oscillator strengths for transitions to Rydberg levels in 12C16O^{12}C^{16}O, 13C16O^{13}C^{16}O and 13C18O^{13}C^{18}O between 967 and 972 A

    Absorption oscillator strengths have been determined from high-resolution spectra in the 967-972 \AA region of three CO isotopomers for transitions to the Rydberg levels 4{\it pπ\pi}(0), 3{\it dπ\pi}(1) and 4{\it pσ\sigma}(0), as well as to the mixed {\it E(6)} level recently characterized by Eidelsberg et al. (2004). Synchrotron radiation from the Super-ACO electron storage ring at Orsay (LURE) was used as a light source. Oscillator strengths were extracted from the recorded spectra by least-squares fitting of the experimental profiles with synthetic spectra taking into account the homogeneous and heterogeneous interactions of the four levels. Column densities were derived from fits to the 3{\it pπ\pi}(0) absorption band whose oscillator strength is well established. These are the first reported measurements for 13^{13}C18^{18}O. For 12^{12}C16^{16}O, our results are consistent with the larger values obtained in the most recent laboratory and astronomical studies.Comment: 9 pages 7 figures 3 tables.     A far UV study of interstellar gas towards HD34078: high excitation H2 and small scale structure - Based on observations performed by the FUSE mission and at the CFHT telescope

    To investigate the presence of small scale structure in the spatial distribution of H2 molecules we have undertaken repeated FUSE UV observations of the runaway O9.5V star, HD34078. In this paper we present five spectra obtained between January 2000 and October 2002. These observations reveal an unexpectedly large amount of highly excited H2. Column densities for H2 levels from (v = 0, J = 0) up to (v = 0, J = 11) and for several v = 1 and v = 2 levels are determined. These results are interpreted in the frame of a model involving essentially two components: i) a foreground cloud (unaffected by HD34078) responsible for the H2 (J = 0, 1), CI, CH, CH+ and CO absorptions; ii) a dense layer of gas (n = 10E4 cm-3) close to the O star and strongly illuminated by its UV flux which accounts for the presence of highly excited H2. Our model successfully reproduces the H2 excitation, the CI fine-structure level populations as well as the CH, CH+ and CO column densities. We also examine the time variability of H2 absorption lines tracing each of these two components. From the stability of the J = 0, 1 and 2 damped H2 profiles we infer a 3 sigma upper limit on column density variations Delta(N(H2))/N(H2) of 5% over scales ranging from 5 to 50 AU. This result clearly rules out any pronounced ubiquitous small scale "density" structure of the kind apparently seen in HI. The lines from highly excited gas are also quite stable (equivalent to Delta(N)/N <= 30%) indicating i) that the ambient gas through which HD34078 is moving is relatively uniform and ii) that the gas flow along the shocked layer is not subject to marked instabilitie

    The global correlation in the observed variation with mass number of the E2E2 and summed M1M1 transition strengths is examined for rare earth nuclei. It is shown that a theory of correlated SS and DD fermion pairs with a simple pairing plus quadrupole interaction leads naturally to this universality. Thus a unified and quantitative description emerges for low-lying quadrupole and dipole strengths.Comment: In press, Phys. Rev. Lett. 199

    Electron-Ion Recombination on Grains and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

    With the high-resolution spectroscopy now available in the optical and satellite UV, it is possible to determine the neutral/ionized column density ratios for several different elements in a single cloud. Assuming ionization equilibrium for each element, one can make several independent determinations of the electron density. For the clouds for which such an analysis has been carried out, these different estimates disagree by large factors, suggesting that some process (or processes) besides photoionization and radiative recombination might play an important role in the ionization balance. One candidate process is collisions of ions with dust grains. Making use of recent work quantifying the abundances of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules and other grains in the interstellar medium, as well as recent models for grain charging, we estimate the grain-assisted ion recombination rates for several astrophysically important elements. We find that these rates are comparable to the rates for radiative recombination for conditions typical of the cold neutral medium. Including grain-assisted ion recombination in the ionization equilibrium analysis leads to increased consistency in the various electron density estimates for the gas along the line of sight to 23 Orionis. However, not all of the discrepancies can be eliminated in this way; we speculate on some other processes that might play a role. We also note that grain-assisted recombination of H+ and He+ leads to significantly lower electron fractions than usually assumed for the cold neutral medium.Comment: LaTeX(12 pages, 8 figures, uses emulateapj5.sty, apjfonts.sty); submitted to ApJ; corrected typo
