Cooling Quantum Gases with Entropy Localization
We study the dynamics of entropy in a time dependent potential and explore
how disorder influences this entropy flow. We show that disorder can trap
entropy at the edge of the atomic cloud enabling a novel cooling method. We
demonstrate the feasibility of our cooling technique by analyzing the evolution
of entropy in a one-dimensional Fermi lattice gas with a time dependent
superlattice potential.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
The perplexing continuum slope of Mars: Effects of thin ferric coatings and viewing geometry
The experiment discussed here was designed to constrain interpretations of variations in continuum slope variations which define several spectral annuli on the flanks of Olympus Mons, observed in the Imaging Spectrometer (IMS) data. The IMS Olympus Mons data reveal that the rings, seen as alternating brighter and darker reflectance in Viking data, correspond to annuli of alternating shallower and steeper continuum slope. At least three factors contributing to continuum slope are identified: ferric coating thickness, viewing geometry, and surface texture. Because the Olympus Mons spectral annuli were observed at nearly constant backscatter geometries in the ISM data, with only slight viewing variations due to the volcanoe's flank slopes, the difference of continuum slope between annuli probably cannot be explained by viewing geometry alone. This suggests that the variation of some fundamental surface characteristics, such as ferric dust/rind thickness or surface texture, is the cause of the Olympus Mons special annuli observed in the ISM imaging spectrometer data
DevOps in Practice -- A preliminary Analysis of two Multinational Companies
DevOps is a cultural movement that aims the collaboration of all the
stakeholders involved in the development, deployment and operation of soft-ware
to deliver a quality product or service in the shortest possible time. DevOps
is relatively recent, and companies have developed their DevOps prac-tices
largely from scratch. Our research aims to conduct an analysis on practic-ing
DevOps in +20 software-intensive companies to provide patterns of DevOps
practices and identify their benefits and barriers. This paper presents the
preliminary analysis of an exploratory case study based on the interviews to
relevant stakeholders of two (multinational) companies. The results show the
benefits (software delivery performance) and barriers that these companies are
dealing with, as well as DevOps team topology they approached during their
DevOps transformation. This study aims to help practitioners and researchers to
better understand DevOps transformations and the contexts where the practices
worked. This, hopefully, will contribute to strengthening the evidence
regarding DevOps and supporting practitioners in making better informed
decisions about the return of investment when adopting DevOps.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables, conferenc
