Thermal Operators in Ising Percolation
We discuss a new cluster representation for the internal energy and the
specific heat of the d-dimensional Ising model, obtained by studying the
percolation mapping of an Ising model with an arbitrary set of
antiferromagnetic links. Such a representation relates the thermal operators to
the topological properties of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters of Ising
percolation and is a powerful tool to get new exact relations on the
topological structure of FK clusters of the Ising model defined on an arbitrary
graph.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures. Improved version. Major changes in the text and

Off equilibrium response function in the one dimensional random field Ising model
A thorough numerical investigation of the slow dynamics in the d=1 random
field Ising model in the limit of an infinite ferromagnetic coupling is
presented. Crossovers from the preasymptotic pure regime to the asymptotic
Sinai regime are investigated for the average domain size, the autocorrelation
function and staggered magnetization. By switching on an additional small
random field at the time tw the linear off equilibrium response function is
obtained, which displays as well the crossover from the nontrivial behavior of
the d=1 pure Ising model to the asymptotic behavior where it vanishes
identically.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
Comment on ``Two Time Scales and Violation of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem in a Finite Dimensional Model for Structural Glasses''
In cond-mat/0002074 Ricci-Tersenghi et al. find two linear regimes in the
fluctuation-dissipation relation between density-density correlations and
associated responses of the Frustrated Ising Lattice Gas. Here we show that
this result does not seem to correspond to the equilibrium quantities of the
model, by measuring the overlap distribution P(q) of the density and comparing
the FDR expected on the ground of the P(q) with the one measured in the
off-equilibrium experiments.Comment: RevTeX, 1 page, 2 eps figures, Comment on F. Ricci-Tersenghi et al.,

Static and dynamic heterogeneities in irreversible gels and colloidal gelation
We compare the slow dynamics of irreversible gels, colloidal gels, glasses
and spin glasses by analyzing the behavior of the so called non-linear
dynamical susceptibility, a quantity usually introduced to quantitatively
characterize the dynamical heterogeneities. In glasses this quantity typically
grows with the time, reaches a maximum and then decreases at large time, due to
the transient nature of dynamical heterogeneities and to the absence of a
diverging static correlation length. We have recently shown that in
irreversible gels the dynamical susceptibility is instead an increasing
function of the time, as in the case of spin glasses, and tends asymptotically
to the mean cluster size. On the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we
here show that in colloidal gelation where clusters are not permanent, at very
low temperature and volume fractions, i.e. when the lifetime of the bonds is
much larger than the structural relaxation time, the non-linear susceptibility
has a behavior similar to the one of the irreversible gel, followed, at higher
volume fractions, by a crossover towards the behavior of glass forming liquids.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Metastable states in the Blume-Emery-Griffiths spin glass model
We study the Blume-Emery-Griffiths spin glass model in presence of an
attractive coupling between real replicas, and evaluate the effective potential
as a function of the density overlap. We find that there is a region, above the
first order transition of the model, where metastable states with a large
density overlap exist. The line where these metastable states appear should
correspond to a purely dynamical transition, with a breaking of ergodicity.
Differently from what happens in p-spin glasses, in this model the dynamical
transition would not be the precursor of a 1-step RSB transition, but
(probably) of a full RSB transition.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, 2 fig
The Influence of Physical Education on Self-Efficacy in Overweight Schoolgirls: A 12-Week Training Program
The purpose of this randomized controlled study was to investigate the impact of a 12- week physical education (PE) program on the self-efficacy of overweight schoolgirls. We randomly assigned 60 overweight schoolgirls (15–17 years) to either an experimental moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise (∼90 min, three times a week) group (n = 30) or a control group (CG) (n = 30) that received non-specific regular PE lessons with activities chosen by the curricular teacher mainly focused on team games and sports skills that aimed to achieve general psycho-physical wellness (∼90 min, three times a week). To assess the starting level of students and significant changes reached, at baseline and after training, a battery of standardized assessment motor tests and a psychometric scale (generalized self-efficacy scale, GES) were administered. At the end of the intervention, the experimental group reported a considerable decrease in body mass index (BMI) and a large improvement in self-efficacy (p < 0.001). No significant changes were found in the CG. The results suggested that the 12-week moderate to a vigorous aerobic exercise program is an effective weight loss intervention and a vehicle to promote a range of outcomes important to the qualitative growth of adolescents. In fact, it could provide a positive and significant impact on the self-efficacy of overweight schoolgirls
Storage capacity of phase-coded patterns in sparse neural networks
We study the storage of multiple phase-coded patterns as stable dynamical
attractors in recurrent neural networks with sparse connectivity. To determine
the synaptic strength of existent connections and store the phase-coded
patterns, we introduce a learning rule inspired to the spike-timing dependent
plasticity (STDP). We find that, after learning, the spontaneous dynamics of
the network replay one of the stored dynamical patterns, depending on the
network initialization. We study the network capacity as a function of
topology, and find that a small- world-like topology may be optimal, as a
compromise between the high wiring cost of long range connections and the
capacity increase.Comment: Accepted for publication in Europhysics Letter
Characterization of Italian Cheeses Ripened Under Nonconventional Conditions
International audience; Four Italian cheeses (Casciotta di Urbino, Barricato San Martino, Vento d'Estate, and Ubriaco di Raboso) nonconventionally ripened under different plant materials (walnut leaves, herbs, hay, and wine by-products, respectively) were compared for compositional, microbiological, biochemical, and volatile profile characteristics. Mean values for gross composition were rather similar. Because primary starters were not used for manufacture, the endogenous lactic acid bacteria were mainly present (7.0 to 9.0 log10 cfu/g). Except for Lactobacillus paracasei and Leuconostoc mesenteroides, which were commonly identified in 3 cheeses, Lactococcus lactis, Enterococcus sanguinicola, Lactobacillus brevis, Enterococcus durans/Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Weissella cibaria/Weissella confusa were variously found in the 4 cheeses. Random amplification of polymorphic DNA-PCR analysis showed the biodiversity among the strains, and the species of lactobacilli were in part grouped according to their origin. As shown by the principal component analysis of reverse-phase fast protein liquid chromatography data for the pH 4.6-soluble fractions and by the determination of free AA, the secondary proteolysis of Barricato San Martino and Vento d'Estate mainly differed from the other 2 cheeses. Purge-and-trap and solid-phase microextraction were coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to determine volatile compounds. Vento d'Estate showed the highest levels of almost all chemical classes, and Casciotta di Urbino was characterized by a very low level of volatile components. Esters, ketones, and terpenes were the chemical classes that mainly differentiated the cheeses. Several volatile compounds seemed to be released directly from the plant materials used for ripening, especially terpenes for Vento d'Estate cheese. The lowest level of volatile free fatty acids was found in Casciotta d'Urbino, in which rennet paste was not used during manufacture. The highest concentration of free fatty acids, especially butyric and caproic acids, was found in Vento d'Estate cheese
Jamming transition in granular media: A mean field approximation and numerical simulations
In order to study analytically the nature of the jamming transition in
granular material, we have considered a cavity method mean field theory, in the
framework of a statistical mechanics approach, based on Edwards' original idea.
For simplicity we have applied the theory to a lattice model and a transition
with exactly the same nature of the glass transition in mean field models for
usual glass formers is found. The model is also simulated in three dimensions
under tap dynamics and a jamming transition with glassy features is observed.
In particular two step decays appear in the relaxation functions and dynamic
heterogeneities resembling ones usually observed in glassy systems. These
results confirm early speculations about the connection between the jamming
transition in granular media and the glass transition in usual glass formers,
giving moreover a precise interpretation of its nature.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure
