    Isostaticity in two dimensional pile of rigid disks

    We study the static structure of piles made of polydisperse disks in the rigid limit with and without friction using molecular dynamic simulations for various elasticities of the disks and pile preparation procedures. The coordination numbers are calculated to examine the isostaticity of the pile structure. For the frictionless pile, it is demonstrated that the coordination number converges to 4 in the rigid limit, which implies that the structure of rigid disk pile is isostatic. On the other hand, for the frictional case with the infinite friction constant, the coordination number depends on the preparation procedure of the pile, but we find that the structure becomes very close to isostatic with the coordination number close to 3 in the rigid limit when the pile is formed through the process that tends to make a pile of random configuration.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to J.     Correlations among hadrons in jets produced in heavy-ion collisions are discussed in the framework of the recombination model. The basic correlation at the parton level is among the shower partons arising from kinematical constraint. The resultant correlation between hadrons at intermediate pTp_T is amazingly rich in characteristics.Comment: 10 pages including 12 figures.     An investigation of surface albedo variations during the recent sahel drought

    Applications Technology Satellite 3 green sensor data were used to measure surface reflectance variations in the Sahara/Sahel during the recent drought period; 1967 to 1974. The magnitude of the seasonal reflectance change is shown to be as much as 80% for years of normal precipitation and less than 50% for drought years. Year to year comparisons during both wet and dry seasons reveal the existence of a surface reflectance cycle coincident with the drought intensity. The relationship between the green reflectance and solar albedo is examined and estimated to be about 0.6 times the reflectance change observed by the green channel

    The investigation indicated that structural laminates can be made which have: a modulus of elasticity comparable to steel, fracture strength of comparable to the yield strength of titanium, density comparable to aluminum, impact resistance comparable to titanium, and little or no notch sensitivity. These laminates can have stiffness and weight advantages over other materials including advanced fiber composites, in some aerospace applications where buckling resistance, vibration frequencies, and weight considerations control the design

    The Kondo problem, for a quantum dot (QD), subjected to an external bias, is analyzed in the limit of infinite Coulomb repulsion by using a consistent equations of motion method based on a slave-boson Hamiltonian. Utilizing a strict perturbative solution in the leads-dot coupling, T, to T^4 and T^6 orders, we calculate the QD spectral density and conductance, as well as the decoherent rate that drive the systemm from the strong to the weak coupling regime. Our results indicate thet the weak coupling regime is reached for voltages larger than a few units of the Kondo temperature.Comment: 5 figure

    Theoretical and experimental research on fluid conductivity of lunar surface materials is summarized. Theoretical methods were developed for the analysis of transitional and free-molecular flows, and for analysis of lunar permeability probe data in general. Experimental studies of rarefied flows under conditions of a large pressure gradient show flows in the continuum regime to be responsible for the largest portion of the pressure drop between source and sink for one dimensional flow, provided the entrance Knudsen number is sufficiently small. The concept of local similarity leading to a universal nondimensional function of Knudsen number was shown to have approximate validity; flows in all regimes may be described in terms of an area fraction and a single length parameter. Synthetic porous media prepared from glass beads exhibited flow behavior similar in many regards to that of a natural sandstone; studies using artificial stones with known pore configurations may lead to new insight concerning the structure of natural materials. The experimental method involving the use of segmented specimens of large permeability is shown to be fruitful
