Generalizing a recent proposal leading to one-parameter families of Hamiltonians and to new sets of squeezed states, we construct larger classes of physically admissible Hamiltonians permitting new developments in squeezing. Coherence is also discussed.Comment: 15 pages, Late

Biodegradable, lignin-based encapsulation enables delivery of Trichoderma reesei with programmed enzymatic release against grapevine trunk diseases

    Get PDF
Antagonistic fungi such as Trichoderma reesei are promising alternatives to conventional fungicides in agriculture. This is especially true for worldwide occurring grapevine trunk diseases, causing losses of US$1.5 billion every year, at which conventional fungicides are mostly ineffective or prohibited by law. Yet, applications of Trichoderma against grapevine trunk diseases are limited to preventive measures, suffer from poor shelf life, or uncontrolled germination. Therefore, we developed a mild and spore-compatible layer-by-layer assembly to encapsulate spores of a new mycoparasitic strain of T. reesei IBWF 034-05 in a bio-based and biodegradable lignin shell. The encapsulation inhibits undesired premature germination and enables the application as an aqueous dispersion via trunk injection. First injected into a plant, the spores remain in a resting state. Second, when lignin-degrading fungi infect the plant, enzymatic degradation of the shell occurs and germination is selectively triggered by the pathogenic fungi itself, which was proven in vitro. Germinated Trichoderma antagonizes the fungal pathogens and finally supplants them from the plant. This concept enables Trichoderma spores for curative treatment of esca, one of the most infective grapevine trunk diseases worldwide

Towards the production of 50'000 tonnes of low-carbon steel sheet for the LHC superconducting dipole and quadrupole magnets

    Get PDF
A total of 50'000 tonnes of low-carbon steel sheet has been ordered for the LHC main magnets. After three years of production, about 10'000 tonnes of steel sheet have been produced by Cockerill-Sambre Groupe Usinor. This paper gives a summary of the manufacturing process and improvements implemented as well as an overview of the difficulties encountered during this production. Preliminary statistics obtained for the mechanical and magnetic steel properties are presented

Group theoretical approach to the intertwined Hamiltonians

We show that the finite difference B\"acklund formula for the Schr\"odinger Hamiltonians is a particular element of the transformation group on the set of Riccati equations considered by two of us in a previous paper. Then, we give a group theoretical explanation to the problem of Hamiltonians related by a first order differential operator. A generalization of the finite difference algorithm relating eigenfunctions of {\emph three} different Hamiltonians is found, and some illustrative examples of the theory are analyzed, finding new potentials for which one eigenfunction and its corresponding eigenvalue is exactly known

miR-34a is upregulated inAIP-mutated somatotropinomas and promotes octreotide resistance

Pituitary adenomas (PAs) are intracranial tumors associated with significant morbidity due to hormonal dysregulation, mass effects and have a heavy treatment burden. Growth hormone (GH)-secreting PAs (somatotropinomas) cause acromegaly-gigantism. Genetic forms of somatotropinomas due to germlineAIPmutations (AIPmut+) have an early onset and are aggressive and resistant to treatment with somatostatin analogs (SSAs), including octreotide. The molecular underpinnings of these clinical features remain unclear. We investigated the role of miRNA dysregulation inAIPmut+ vsAIPmut- PA samples by array analysis. miR-34a and miR-145 were highly expressed inAIPmut+ vsAIPmut- somatotropinomas. Ectopic expression ofAIPmut (p.R271W) inAip(-/-)mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) upregulated miR-34a and miR-145, establishing a causal link betweenAIPmut and miRNA expression. In PA cells (GH3), miR-34a overexpression promoted proliferation, clonogenicity, migration and suppressed apoptosis, whereas miR-145 moderately affected proliferation and apoptosis. Moreover, high miR-34a expression increased intracellular cAMP, a critical mitogenic factor in PAs. Crucially, high miR-34a expression significantly blunted octreotide-mediated GH inhibition and antiproliferative effects. miR-34a directly targetsGnai2encoding G alpha i2, a G protein subunit inhibiting cAMP production. Accordingly, G alpha i2 levels were significantly lower inAIPmut+ vsAIPmut- PA. Taken together, somatotropinomas withAIPmutations overexpress miR-34a, which in turn downregulates G alpha i2 expression, increases cAMP concentration and ultimately promotes cell growth. Upregulation of miR-34a also impairs the hormonal and antiproliferative response of PA cells to octreotide. Thus, miR-34a is a novel downstream target of mutantAIPthat promotes a cellular phenotype mirroring the aggressive clinical features ofAIPmut+ acromegaly.Peer reviewe

Three-minute wave enhancement in the solar photosphere

    Get PDF
It is a well-known result that the power of five-minute oscillations is progressively reduced by magnetic fields in the solar photosphere. Many authors have pointed out that this fact could be due to a complex interaction of many processes: opacity effects, MHD mode conversion and intrinsic reduced acoustic emissivity in strong magnetic fields. While five-minute oscillations are the dominant component in the photosphere, it has been shown that chromospheric heights are in turn dominated by three-minute oscillations. Two main theories have been proposed to explain their presence based upon resonance filtering in the atmospheric cavity and non linear interactions. In this work we show, through the analysis of IBIS observations of a solar pore in the photospheric Fe I 617.3 nm line, that three-minute waves are already present at the height of formation of this line and that their amplitude depends on the magnetic field strength and is strictly confined in the umbral region.Comment: A&A accepte

Solar Physics - Plasma Physics Workshop

A summary of the proceedings of a conference whose purpose was to explore plasma physics problems which arise in the study of solar physics is provided. Sessions were concerned with specific questions including the following: (1) whether the solar plasma is thermal or non-themal; (2) what spectroscopic data is required; (3) what types of magnetic field structures exist; (4) whether magnetohydrodynamic instabilities occur; (5) whether resistive or non-magnetohydrodynamic instabilities occur; (6) what mechanisms of particle acceleration have been proposed; and (7) what information is available concerning shock waves. Very few questions were answered categorically but, for each question, there was discussion concerning the observational evidence, theoretical analyses, and existing or potential laboratory and numerical experiments
