Internationalisation des élites académiques suisses au 20ème siècle : convergences et contrastes
A partir d'une base de données originale sur les professeurs de droit et de sciences économiques des universités suisses sur l'ensemble du XXe siècle, cet article rend compte des diverses dynamiques d'internationalisation de ces élites. Trois enseignements majeurs peuvent être tirés de nos analyses. D'abord, d'un point de vue diachronique, il est possible de diviser le XXe siècle en trois phases historiques : une internationalité forte des élites académiques au début du siècle, une nationalisation ou « relocalisation » suite à la Première Guerre mondiale, puis une « ré-internationalisation » à partir des années 1960 et de manière accélérée depuis les années 1980. Ensuite, les professeurs de sciences économiques, en terme de nationalités ou de lieu de formation, sont plus cosmopolites et ont moins d'ancrage local que leurs homologues juristes. Enfin, la prédominance germanique parmi les professeurs des universités suisses au début du siècle, qui s'explique autant par une internationalité d'« excellence » que de « proximité », laisse place, surtout en sciences économiques, à une montée de l'influence des Etats-Unis, révélatrice d'un effritement de l'internationalité de « proximité »
De la sociologie de l'innovation à l'imagination sociologique : la théorie des champs à l'épreuve de la profession infirmière
Si l'on suit la perspective de Saussure pour qui le point de vue crée l'objet, la « nouveauté » d'un objet sociologique suppose au moins autant le renouvellement de son approche que la « nouveauté intrinsèque » de celui-ci. Dans cet article, nous privilégions la voie d'un tel renouvellement en mettant à l'épreuve un « vieil objet » par une « approche ancienne ». Nous inscrivant à contre-courant d'une tendance à la parcellisation de la discipline en sociologies thématiques, nous montrons la valeur heuristique qu'il y a à saisir une profession comme un espace social de positions différenciées qui ne prend sens qu'une fois réinscrit dans le champ au sein duquel il s'insère. Largement féminisée et partiellement dominée, la profession infirmière est soumise à une théorie traditionnellement mobilisée pour l'étude de groupes masculins et dominants : la théorie des champs de Pierre Bourdieu
Context Tree Selection: A Unifying View
The present paper investigates non-asymptotic properties of two popular
procedures of context tree (or Variable Length Markov Chains) estimation:
Rissanen's algorithm Context and the Penalized Maximum Likelihood criterion.
First showing how they are related, we prove finite horizon bounds for the
probability of over- and under-estimation. Concerning overestimation, no
boundedness or loss-of-memory conditions are required: the proof relies on new
deviation inequalities for empirical probabilities of independent interest. The
underestimation properties rely on loss-of-memory and separation conditions of
the process.
These results improve and generalize the bounds obtained previously. Context
tree models have been introduced by Rissanen as a parsimonious generalization
of Markov models. Since then, they have been widely used in applied probability
and statistics
Pivotal estimation in high-dimensional regression via linear programming
We propose a new method of estimation in high-dimensional linear regression
model. It allows for very weak distributional assumptions including
heteroscedasticity, and does not require the knowledge of the variance of
random errors. The method is based on linear programming only, so that its
numerical implementation is faster than for previously known techniques using
conic programs, and it allows one to deal with higher dimensional models. We
provide upper bounds for estimation and prediction errors of the proposed
estimator showing that it achieves the same rate as in the more restrictive
situation of fixed design and i.i.d. Gaussian errors with known variance.
Following Gautier and Tsybakov (2011), we obtain the results under weaker
sensitivity assumptions than the restricted eigenvalue or assimilated
conditions
Virtual Reality for Pain Relief in the Emergency Room (VIPER) - a prospective, interventional feasibility study.
BACKGROUND
Pain is one of the most common, yet challenging problems leading to emergency department (ED) presentation, despite the availability of a wide range of pharmacological therapies. Virtual reality (VR) simulations are well studied in a wide variety of clinical settings, including acute and chronic pain management, as well as anxiety disorders. However, studies in the busy environment of an adult ED are scarce. The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of a VR simulation for pain and anxiety control in a convenience sample of adult ED patients presenting with traumatic and non-traumatic pain triaged 2-5 (i.e., urgent to non-urgent) with a pain rating of ≥ 3 on a numeric rating scale (NRS 0-10).
METHODS
Prospective within-subject, repeated measures interventional feasibility pilot study at a Swiss University ED. The intervention consisted of a virtual reality simulation in addition to usual care. Pain and anxiety levels were measured using a verbally administered numeric rating scale (NRS) before and after the intervention. Information on patient experience was collected using established rating scales.
RESULTS
Fifty-two patients were enrolled. The most common pain localisations were extremities (n = 15, 28.8%) and abdomen (n = 12, 23.1%). About one third of patients presented with trauma-associated pain (n = 16, 30.8%). Duration of pain was mainly acute ( 24 h) (n = 32, 61.5%). The majority of patients were triage category 3, i.e. semi-urgent (n = 48, 92.3%). Significant reduction in pain (NRS median pre-VR simulation 4.5 (IQR 3-7) vs. median post-VR simulation 3 (IQR 2-5), p < 0.001), and anxiety levels (NRS median pre-VR simulation 4 (IQR 2-5) vs. median post-VR simulation 2 (IQR 0-3), p < 0.001) was achieved, yielding moderate to large effect sizes (Cohen's d estimate for pain reduction = 0.59 (95% CI 0.19-0.98), for anxiety level on NRS = 0.75 (95% CI 0.34-1.15). With medium immersion and good tolerability of the VR simulation, user satisfaction was high.
CONCLUSIONS
Virtual reality analgesia for pain and anxiety reduction in the busy setting of an ED is feasible, effective, with high user satisfaction. Further randomized controlled studies are needed to better characterize its impact on pain perception and resource utilization
Arbitrage and deflators in illiquid markets
This paper presents a stochastic model for discrete-time trading in financial
markets where trading costs are given by convex cost functions and portfolios
are constrained by convex sets. The model does not assume the existence of a
cash account/numeraire. In addition to classical frictionless markets and
markets with transaction costs or bid-ask spreads, our framework covers markets
with nonlinear illiquidity effects for large instantaneous trades. In the
presence of nonlinearities, the classical notion of arbitrage turns out to have
two equally meaningful generalizations, a marginal and a scalable one. We study
their relations to state price deflators by analyzing two auxiliary market
models describing the local and global behavior of the cost functions and
constraints
Phylogeography and population structure of the biologically invasive phytopathogen Erwinia amylovora inferred using minisatellites
Summary Erwinia amylovora causes a major disease of pome fruit trees worldwide, and is regulated as a quarantine organism in many countries. While some diversity of isolates has been observed, molecular epidemiology of this bacterium is hindered by a lack of simple molecular typing techniques with sufficiently high resolution. We report a molecular typing system of E. amylovora based on variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) analysis. Repeats in the E. amylovora genome were identified with comparative genomic tools, and VNTR markers were developed and validated. A Multiple-Locus VNTR Analysis (MLVA) was applied to E. amylovora isolates from bacterial collections representing global and regional distribution of the pathogen. Based on six repeats, MLVA allowed the distinction of 227 haplotypes among a collection of 833 isolates of worldwide origin. Three geographically separated groups were recognized among global isolates using Bayesian clustering methods. Analysis of regional outbreaks confirmed presence of diverse haplotypes but also high representation of certain haplotypes during outbreaks. MLVA analysis is a practical method for epidemiological studies of E. amylovora, identifying previously unresolved population structure within outbreaks. Knowledge of such structure can increase our understanding on how plant diseases emerge and spread over a given geographical region
