On the accuracy of the ALI method for solving the radiative transfer equation
We solve the integral equation describing the propagation of light in an
isothermal plane-parallel atmosphere of optical thickness , adopting a
uniform thermalization parameter . The solution given by the ALI
method, widely used in the field of stellar atmospheres modelling, is compared
to the exact solution. Graphs are given that illustrate the accuracy of the ALI
solution as a function of the parameters , and optical depth
variable .Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures, A&A, accepted 30 July 2003, minor correction
A conjugate gradient method for the solution of the non-LTE line radiation transfer problem
This study concerns the fast and accurate solution of the line radiation
transfer problem, under non-LTE conditions. We propose and evaluate an
alternative iterative scheme to the classical ALI-Jacobi method, and to the
more recently proposed Gauss-Seidel and Successive Over-Relaxation (GS/SOR)
schemes. Our study is indeed based on the application of a preconditioned
bi-conjugate gradient method (BiCG-P). Standard tests, in 1D plane parallel
geometry and in the frame of the two-level atom model, with monochromatic
scattering, are discussed. Rates of convergence between the previously
mentioned iterative schemes are compared, as well as their respective timing
properties. The smoothing capability of the BiCG-P method is also demonstrated.Comment: Research note: 4 pages, 5 figures, accepted to A&
Self-Templated Nucleation in Peptide and Protein aggregation
Peptides and proteins exhibit a common tendency to assemble into highly
ordered fibrillar aggregates, whose formation proceeds in a
nucleation-dependent manner that is often preceded by the formation of
disordered oligomeric assemblies. This process has received much attention
because disordered oligomeric aggregates have been associated with
neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Here
we describe a self-templated nucleation mechanism that determines the
transition between the initial condensation of polypeptide chains into
disordered assemblies and their reordering into fibrillar structures. The
results that we present show that at the molecular level this transition is due
to the ability of polypeptide chains to reorder within oligomers into fibrillar
assemblies whose surfaces act as templates that stabilise the disordered
assemblies.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Preconditioned Bi-Conjugate Gradient Method for Radiative Transfer in Spherical Media
A robust numerical method called the Preconditioned Bi-Conjugate Gradient
(Pre-BiCG)method is proposed for the solution of radiative transfer equation in
spherical geometry.A variant of this method called Stabilized Preconditioned
Bi-Conjugate Gradient (Pre-BiCG-STAB) is also presented. These are iterative
methods based on the construction of a set of bi-orthogonal vectors. The
application of Pre-BiCG method in some benchmark tests show that the method is
quite versatile, and can handle hard problems that may arise in astrophysical
radiative transfer theory.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figure
Spectrally efficient transmit diversity scheme for differentially modulated multicarrier transmissions
Cyclic delay diversity is a simple, yet effective, transmit diversity scheme for multicarrier based transmissions employing coherent digital linear modulation schemes. It is shown that, for satisfactory operation, the scheme requires additional channel estimation overhead compared to single antenna and traditional spaceâtime coded transmissions owing to the inherent increase in frequency selective fading. The authors analyse the additional channel estimation overhead requirement for a Hiperlan #2 style system with two transmit antennas operating in a NLOS indoor environment. The analysis shows that an additional overhead of 500% is required for the candidate system compared to a single antenna system. It is also shown that by employing differential modulation the channel estimation overhead can be eliminated with significant performance improvement compared to a system employing a practical channel estimation scheme. This novel combination, termed âdifferentially modulated cyclic delay diversity, is shown to yield a highly spectral efficient, yet simple transmit diversity solution for multi-carrier transmissions
The Signaling Value of Labor Market Programs
This paper investigates how employers interpret participation in active labor market programs for hiring decisions. Drawing on signaling theory, we assume that employers use program participation as a signal for a candidateâs qualities. On the basis of a factorial survey experiment, we simulated a hiring process for two job positions, a low and mid-skilled one, in the hotel sector. Recruiters were asked to evaluate fictional candidates that differ, among other characteristics, in their participation in active labor market programs. Our results show that employers do use participation in labor market programs as a signal. Its impact can be positive as well as negative, depending on the type of job that is applied for. For low-skill positions, the impact is more positive than for mid-skilled ones. We also show that the signal âparticipation in a labor market programâ interacts with education and, to a lesser extent, nationality. By studying interactions among signals and with job type, this article contributes both, to a better understanding of how job market signaling works as well as to the literature on labor market programs
