    Relative Concerns of Rural-to-Urban Migrants in China

    How the income of "relevant others" affects well-being has received renewed interest in the recent literature using subjective data. Migrants constitutes a par- ticularly interesting group to study this question: as they changed environment, they are likely to be concerned by several potential reference groups including the people "left behind", other migrants and "natives". We focus here on the huge population of rural-to-urban migrants in China. We exploit a novel dataset that comprises samples of migrants and urban people living in the same cities, as well as rural households mostly surveyed in the provinces where migrants are coming from. After establishing these links, we fi…nd that the well-being of migrants is largely af- fected by relative concerns: results point to negative relative concerns toward other migrants and workers of home regions - this status effect is particularly strong for migrants who wish to settle permanently in cities. We fi…nd in contrast a positive relative income effect vis-à-vis the urban reference group, interpreted as a signal effect: larger urban incomes indicate higher income prospects for the migrants. A richer pattern is obtained when sorting migrants according to the duration of stay, expectations to return to home countries and characteristics related to family cir- cumstances, work conditions and community ties.China, relative concerns, well-being.

    Whispering Gallery Mode Dielectric Resonators for the Millimeter Wave Near Field Sensing Applications

    The resonance characteristics of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in parallel-plate type cylindrical dielectric resonators (DRs) are numerically considered to optimise their characteristics for sensing applications. Results for the dependency of the resonant frequency, Q-factor, slow-down factor and electric energy filling factor of the modes on resonator parameters for both isotropic and anisotropic DR are presented. The possible applications of the results for millimeter wave near field nondestructive measurements are discussed

The common theme of these works is that of approaching the study of squeal noise on experimental set-ups that are much simpler than commercial disc brakes, providing the possibility of repeatable measurements of squeal occurrence. As a consequence, it is possible to build consistent and robust models of the experimental apparatus to simulate the squeal events and to understand the physics behind squeal instabilities.     Tactile perception by friction induced vibrations

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.When a finger moves to scan the surface of an object (haptic sensing), the sliding contact generates vibrations that propagate in the finger skin activating the receptors (mechanoreceptors) located in the skin, allowing the brain to identify objects and perceive information about their properties. The information about the surface of the object is transmitted through vibrations induced by friction between the skin and the object scanned by the fingertip. The mechanoreceptors transduce the stress state into electrical impulses that are conveyed to the brain. A clear understanding of the mechanisms of the tactile sensing is fundamental to numerous applications, like the development of artificial tactile sensors for intelligent prostheses or robotic assistants, and in ergonomics. While the correlation between surface roughness and tactile sensation has already been reported in literature, the vibration spectra induced by the finger-surface scanning and the consequent activation of the mechanoreceptors on the skin have received less attention. In this paper, frequency analysis of signals characterizing surface scanning is carried out to investigate the vibration spectrum measured on the finger and to highlight the changes shown in the vibration spectra as a function of characteristic contact parameters such as scanning speed, roughness and surface texture. An experimental set-up is developed to recover the vibration dynamics by detecting the contact force and the induced vibrations; the bench test has been designed to guarantee reproducibility of measurements at the low amplitude of the vibrations of interest, and to perform measurements without introducing external noise. Two different perception mechanisms, as a function of the roughness wavelength, have been pointed out. The spectrum of vibration obtained by scanning textiles has been investigated.     Response of Autonomic Nervous System to Body Positions: Fourier and Wavelet Analysis

    Two mathematical methods, the Fourier and wavelet transforms, were used to study the short term cardiovascular control system. Time series, picked from electrocardiogram and arterial blood pressure lasting 6 minutes, were analyzed in supine position (SUP), during the first (HD1), and the second parts (HD2) of 90∘90^{\circ} head down tilt and during recovery (REC). The wavelet transform was performed using the Haar function of period T=2jT=2^j (% j=1,2,...... ,6) to obtain wavelet coefficients. Power spectra components were analyzed within three bands, VLF (0.003-0.04), LF (0.04-0.15) and HF (0.15-0.4) with the frequency unit cycle/interval. Wavelet transform demonstrated a higher discrimination among all analyzed periods than the Fourier transform. For the Fourier analysis, the LF of R-R intervals and VLF of systolic blood pressure show more evident difference for different body positions. For the wavelet analysis, the systolic blood pressures show much more evident difference than the R-R intervals. This study suggests a difference in the response of the vessels and the heart to different body positions. The partial dissociation between VLF and LF results is a physiologically relevant finding of this work.Comment: RevTex,8 figure
