Notes on Some of the Rarer Birds of the Ames Region
While the writer was living at Ames during several past years he took various notes on birds observed in that vicinity. During the years 1917, 1918, 1919 and 1920, regular excursions were taken, sometimes alone, sometimes accompanied with other bird enthusiasts and sometimes with his college students in bird study. It was only during the year 1919 that the writer taught the course in bird study for the Department of Zoology at the Iowa State College. While this course was taught by Professor H. A. Scullen and later by Professor J. E. Guthrie, the writer frequently accompanied the classes on field trips
Mental Competency and Mental Hospitals
Psychiatrists generally are aware that there is not necessarily any relation between competency and hospitalization for mental illness. The consensus seems to be that these two things should be considered entirely separately. Many patients may need mental hospital care, without having suffered any impairment of their competency. My personal estimate is that 75% of all patients admitted to the average mental hospital could be considered to be competent. Also, it is well to keep in mind that an individual may require a guardian because of incompetency due to a mental disorder, but not require hospitalization in a mental hospital. Unfortunately, this distinction is not readily recognized by many attorneys and courts. It is also sometimes forgotten by psychiatrists. There are many factors which tend to foster the impression that hospitalization in a mental hospital is equivalent to loss of competency. This paper is being written to bring attention to the problem and to plead for corrective action
Bad Facts, Bad Law: Feliciano v. 7-Eleven, Inc. and Self-Defense as a Substantial Public Policy
Mites Affecting the Poison Oak
According to the plan of nature animals are compelled either directly or indirectly to lay under tribute the plant world in order to obtain food; and so completely have they done so that it is doubtful if any, among the many thousands of species of the latter, are exempt from attack. Being thus exposed to the wholesale appetites of higher creation plants have been forced into the evolution of devices for warding off animal attacks
Amnesia after Brain Injury
In discussing amnesia, it is first important to point out that it occurs as but one of a number of symptoms of brain injury. While we choose to single it out, we should keep in mind that it exists contemporaneously with, and in relation to, other symptoms

The Life and Behavior of the House Spider
Few species of invertebrates come under our everyday observation more than the common house spider, Theridion tepidariorum K. It is a familiar object in attics and in basements, in cellars and in outhouses of all kinds, in fact it will be found in almost any of the situations where there is shelter and moisture, and where insects may be found in sufficient numbers for food. In looking up the literature relating to this spider the writer was surprised to find that no one, apparently, had worked out its life history or made systematic observations on its habits
The Viability of Parallel Processing Technology for Use in Rotorcraft Simulation. Internal Report No. 9504
This report documents the viability of parallel processing technology for use in Rotorcraft
Simulation. The generic rotorcraft simulation model RASCAL (Rotorcraft Aeromechanics
Simulation for Control Analysis) has been 'parallelised' in a number of different ways and
the computational performance has been measured and compared to that of the sequential
code. The model has been implemented on the Parsytec series of parallel computers
running PARIX and also on a cluster of Silicon Graphics Indy Workstations running PVM.
The clustered workstation facility forms the HNW project funded by JISC NTI
