Multi-scale computational homogenisation to predict the long-term durability of composite structures
A coupled hygro-thermo-mechanical computational model is proposed for fibre reinforced polymers, formulated within the framework of Computational Homogenisation (CH). At each macrostructure Gauss point, constitutive matrices for thermal, moisture transport and mechanical responses are calculated from CH of the underlying representative volume element (RVE). A degradation model, developed from experimental data relating evolution of mechanical properties over time for a given exposure temperature and moisture concentration is also developed and incorporated in the proposed computational model. A unified approach is used to impose the RVE boundary conditions, which allows convenient switching between linear Dirichlet, uniform Neumann and periodic boundary conditions. A plain weave textile composite RVE consisting of yarns embedded in a matrix is considered in this case. Matrix and yarns are considered as isotropic and transversely isotropic materials respectively. Traveling wave solutions in the Burridge-Knopoff model
The slider-block Burridge-Knopoff model with the Coulomb friction law is
studied as an excitable medium. It is shown that in the continuum limit the
system admits solutions in the form of the self-sustained shock waves traveling
with constant speed which depends only on the amount of the accumulated stress
in front of the wave. For a wide class of initial conditions the behavior of
the system is determined by these shock waves and the dynamics of the system
can be expressed in terms of their motion. The solutions in the form of the
periodic wave trains and sources of counter-propagating waves are analyzed. It
is argued that depending on the initial conditions the system will either tend
to synchronize or exhibit chaotic spatiotemporal behavior.Comment: 12 pages (ReVTeX), 7 figures (Postscript) to be published in Phys.

Language and Groundwater: Symbolic Gradients of the Anthropocene
This article argues that geographers must study the power of words as integral parts of humanâenvironment relationships, with particular attention to local meanings, to intervene more effectively in the Anthropocene. Words are important tools by which people come to understand environmental changes and develop plans to facilitate mitigation and adaptation or, alternatively, to postpone these responses. This project considers the portion of Texas underlain by the Ogallala aquifer as a system of communication, exploring stakeholder articulations through in-depth interviews. The semiotic concepts of gradients, grading, degradation, and grace are employed to facilitate consideration of how verbal articulations intersect with resource use, conservation, anthropogenic environmental change, and action within a highly conservative political context.Office of the VP for Researc
Lifeworld Inc. : and what to do about it
Can we detect changes in the way that the world turns up as they turn up? This paper makes such an attempt. The first part of the paper argues that a wide-ranging change is occurring in the ontological preconditions of Euro-American cultures, based in reworking what and how an event is produced. Driven by the security â entertainment complex, the aim is to mass produce phenomenological encounter: Lifeworld Inc as I call it. Swimming in a sea of data, such an aim requires the construction of just enough authenticity over and over again. In the second part of the paper, I go on to argue that this new world requires a different kind of social science, one that is experimental in its orientationâjust as Lifeworld Inc isâbut with a mission to provoke awareness in untoward ways in order to produce new means of association. A Greater Means to the Greater Good: Ethical Guidelines to Meet Social Movement Organization Advocacy Challenges
Existing public relations ethics literature often proves inadequate when applied to social movement campaigns, considering the special communication challenges activists face as marginalized moral visionaries in a commercial public sphere. The communications of counter-hegemonic movements is distinct enough from corporate, nonprofit, and governmental organizations to warrant its own ethical guidelines. The unique communication guidelines most relevant to social movement organizations include promoting asymmetrical advocacy to a greater extent than is required for more powerful organizations and building flexibility into the TARES principles to privilege social responsibility over respect for audience values in activist campaigns serving as ideological critique
A case for houses in the UK to be constructed of fibre reinforced polymer components
A summary review is presented on the state of the present UK house-building industry and the role that Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) can play in meeting the expected higher demand for houses offering a reduced carbon footprint. The past uses of Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) are presented and their advantages and shortcomings as house-building materials are given. It is shown that housing units of FRP materials would be lightweight, flexible and energy efficient. To therefore meet the UKâs dual needs for low-cost housing and sustainable construction the authorâs make the case for the development of open-building systems constructed of Pultruded FRP components
