Family Documents, Analogy, and Reconciliation in the Works of Carme Riera
In La meitat de l'ànima and Temps d'innocència Carme Riera looks to the family album and personal history to reconcile with Spain's turbulent past. The fictionalization of history emphasizes the unstable nature of the past and the improbability of "truth." Through letters and photographs the past lives in the present yet remains elusive as memory works in revisionist ways on what was thought as factual and permanent
Sensitivity to molar contingencies of food presentation
Twelve rats were exposed to two variable-time schedules that differed in their rates of food delivery. The imposed schedule was normally in effect, but lever pressing occasionally switched to the alternate schedule for periods averaging 30 s. Increases in food frequency afforded by switching to the alternate schedule were manipulated across conditions. All rats were exposed to the same absolute food frequency increases, but the programming of these increases was varied among the rats by holding particular food delivery rates constant across conditions. For half of the rats, the schedules were signaled. In general, response rates were directly related to the size of the food-frequency increase, although the effect was more robust when the schedules were signaled. Response rates were undifferentiated when imposed schedule food delivery rates were held constant. The results lend limited support to the molar account that behavior is sensitive to changes in rates of stimulus events

Response and time allocation on concurrent variable -interval schedules of signaled and unsignaled reinforcement
The present experiments were designed to evaluate accounts of how behavior is allocated on concurrent variable-interval (VI) VI schedules. The generalized matching law assumes that the proportion of behavior allocated to the two schedules will match the proportion of reinforcers obtained on the two schedules (Baum, 1974). An alternate view holds that under ideal conditions, behavior should fix almost exclusively at the richer schedule. The leaner schedule is only visited, or sampled , when a reinforcer becomes available on that schedule (Houston & McNamara, 1981). Attempts were made to create optimal conditions for producing an ideal fix-and-sample response pattern. Pigeons were exposed to a series of concurrent VI VI schedules with and without signals for the availability of reinforcement. In Experiment 1, reinforcers at the lean alternative were signaled, which produced a robust tendency to fix at the rich schedule. In Experiment 2, reinforcers at the rich schedule were signaled, and the allocation of behavior shifted in favor of the lean schedule. No evidence of an ideal fix-and-sample pattern was found in either experiment, but a less extreme form of the pattern was observed in both experiments, regardless of the presence or absence of signals. Results were consistent with other research indicating that less extreme fix-and-sample patterns may be a fundamental characteristic of behavior engender by concurrent schedules (e.g., Aparicio & Baum, 2006). Although the present data were well described by the generalized matching equation, they were better described by a model that captures the way in which reinforcers are obtained by fix-and-sample response patterns (MacDonall, 2005)
Books we should actually burn: why history textbooks are best left on the shelves
This Critical Action Research (CAR) thesis combines my personal experience and the research of others to investigate the problems surrounding history textbooks. American History textbooks do a poor job of holistically explaining the past and often default to what publishers consider “safe” or “neutral” points of view. Textbooks present history from a white-male perspective lifting those stories while disregarding, discounting, white-washing, or ignoring the contributions, impacts, or experiences of people of color. After analyzing this concern I will discuss solutions and alternatives to history textbooks and why I have concluded that it is best practice to leave these books on the shelves (or in a burn pit) where they belong
The relevance of contemporary bronze casting in Ubon, Thailand for understanding the archaeological record of the Bronze Age in Peninsular Southeast Asia
A direct historical approach is used in this thesis to document the lost wax casting technique as currently practiced by indigenous metallurgists in northeastern Thailand. The smiths observed at Ban Pba Ao, Ubon Ratchathani Province are the last practicing members of a bronze working tradition that has been in continuous operation at the village for two centuries. An account of the processes used to create bronze bells is provided. Of particular significance is the fact that the yard in which casting activities are performed did not receive clean up operations following the bells production. As a result, hearths, bowl furnaces, crucibles and fragments of clay moulds are left scattered about the yard. These materials accumulating in one location would eventually create a mound of cultural debris. The discarded materials from the lost wax casting process as practiced at Ban Pba Ao provide considerable insight into what might be found in the stratigraphy of Peninsular Southeast Asian prehistoric sites that were involved in the production of bronze objects. The study concludes that attention needs to be paid to the stratigraphic sequences from which bronze artifacts are extracted, rather than relying on the artifacts to determine the type of process used in their manufacture
