This paper will argue in three sections that Thus Spoke Zarathustra necessarily implies an aristocratic political system. In the section Zarathustra’s Value Theory, I lay out Zarathustra\u27s theory of value creation. In the second section, Possible Interpretations of Value Creation, I describe three different perspectives that can be used to understand Zarathustra’s value theory. In the third section, Zarathustra and Politics I provide a critique of modern liberalism and an alternative coherent with Nietzsche\u27s philosophy, aristocracy

Icosahedral (A5) Family Symmetry and the Golden Ratio Prediction for Solar Neutrino Mixing

We investigate the possibility of using icosahedral symmetry as a family symmetry group in the lepton sector. The rotational icosahedral group, which is isomorphic to A5, the alternating group of five elements, provides a natural context in which to explore (among other possibilities) the intriguing hypothesis that the solar neutrino mixing angle is governed by the golden ratio. We present a basic toolbox for model-building using icosahedral symmetry, including explicit representation matrices and tensor product rules. As a simple application, we construct a minimal model at tree level in which the solar angle is related to the golden ratio, the atmospheric angle is maximal, and the reactor angle vanishes to leading order. The approach provides a rich setting in which to investigate the flavor puzzle of the Standard Model.Comment: 22 pages, version to be published in Phys. Rev.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)This was a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a stable 30 per cent stannous fluoride solution on recurrent caries around the margins of amalgam restorations. Two hundred ninety deciduous and permanent teeth were restored in 34 children, ages six to nine years. Cavity preparations were treated with either stable 30 per cent stannous fluoride solution or a placebo solution (double blind technique) prior to the placement of amalgam restorations. A comprehensive coded system was used to record the description and position of conditions associated with recurrent caries after a one-year period. Children receiving the stannous fluoride treatment experienced a 58.9 per cent reduction in recurrent caries when compared to the control children. The children receiving the stannous fluoride treatment showed a 60.7 and 46.7 per cent reduction in recurrent carious lesions in permanent and deciduous teeth, respectively, when compared to the control children. The reduction in recurrent caries was attributed to the anticariogenic effect of the stannous fluoride treatment. Conditions associated with recurrent caries were mainly inadequate extension in fissures and grooves, overextension of the cavity preparation, marginal fractures of enamel and amalgam, marginal excess, and deterioration of the amalgam margin. Recurrent caries around the margins of restorations appeared to depend on (1) the caries susceptibility of the adjacent tooth structure,(2) the extension of the cavity preparation, and (3) the condition of the amalgam-enamel margin

Predictions for the Leptonic Dirac CP-Violating Phase

We explore the effects of correlations among observable parameters of neutrino mixing on predictions for the leptonic Dirac CP-violating phase. We focus on a standard class of theoretical models that include a single source of CP-violation due to charged lepton corrections. We take two complementary approaches -- one in which the model parameters are uncorrelated and one in which correlations are introduced as a way to optimally reproduce the experimentally measured mixing angles. We find that in both cases we can guarantee a physically meaningful prediction for the most likely value of the leptonic Dirac CP-violating phase.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figure

Golden Ratio Prediction for Solar Neutrino Mixing

It has recently been speculated that the solar neutrino mixing angle is connected to the golden ratio phi. Two such proposals have been made, cot theta_{12} = phi and cos theta_{12} = phi/2. We compare these Ansatze and discuss a model leading to cos theta_{12} = phi/2 based on the dihedral group D_{10}. This symmetry is a natural candidate because the angle in the expression cos theta_{12} = phi/2 is simply pi/5, or 36 degrees. This is the exterior angle of a decagon and D_{10} is its rotational symmetry group. We also estimate radiative corrections to the golden ratio predictions.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure. Risk factors associated with lambing traits

peer-reviewedThis article was first published in Animal (2016), 10:1, pp 89–95, © The Animal Consortium 2015The objective of this study was to establish the risk factors associated with both lambing difficulty and lamb mortality in the Irish sheep multibreed population. A total of 135 470 lambing events from 42 675 ewes in 839 Irish crossbred and purebred flocks were available. Risk factors associated with producer-scored ewe lambing difficulty score (scale of one (no difficulty) to four (severe difficulty)) were determined using linear mixed models. Risk factors associated with the logit of the probability of lamb mortality at birth (i.e. binary trait) were determined using generalised estimating equations. For each dependent variable, a series of simple regression models were developed as well as a multiple regression model. In the simple regression models, greater lambing difficulty was associated with quadruplet bearing, younger ewes, of terminal breed origin, lambing in February; for example, first parity ewes experienced greater (P7.0 kg) birth weights, quadruplet born lambs and lambs that experienced a more difficult lambing (predicted probability of death for lambs that required severe and veterinary assistance of 0.15 and 0.32, respectively); lambs from dual-purpose breeds and born to younger ewes were also at greater risk of mortality. In the multiple regression model, the association between ewe parity, age at first lambing, year of lambing and lamb mortality no longer persisted. The trend in solutions of the levels of each fixed effect that remained associated with lamb mortality in the multiple regression model, did not differ from the trends observed in the simple regression models although the differential in relative risk between the different lambing difficulty scores was greater in the multiple regression model. Results from this study show that many common flock- and animal-level factors are associated with both lambing difficulty and lamb mortality and management of different risk category groups (e.g. scanned litter sizes, ewe age groups) can be used to appropriately manage the flock at lambing to reduce their incidence
