    Atlantic Tropical Cyclogenetic Processes during SOP-3 NAMMA in the GEOS-5 Global Data Assimilation and Forecast System

    This article investigates the role of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) in tropical cyclogenetic processes associated with a non-developing and a developing African easterly wave observed during the Special Observation Period (SOP-3) phase of the 2006 NASA African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses (NAMMA). The two waves are chosen because both interact heavily with Saharan air. A global data assimilation and forecast system, the NASA GEOS-5, is being run to produce a set of high-quality global analyses, inclusive of all observations used operationally but with denser satellite information. In particular, following previous works by the same Authors, the quality-controlled data from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) used to produce these analyses have a better coverage than the one adopted by operational centers. From these improved analyses, two sets of 31 5-day high resolution forecasts, at horizontal resolutions of both half and quarter degrees, are produced. Results show that very steep moisture gradients are associated with the SAL in forecasts and analyses even at great distance from the Sahara. In addition, a thermal dipole (warm above, cool below) is present in the non-developing case. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) show that aerosol optical thickness is higher in the non-developing case. Altogether, results suggest that radiative effect of dust may play some role in producing a thermal structure less favorable to cyclogenesis. Results also indicate that only global horizontal resolutions on the order of 20-30 kilometers can capture the large-scale transport and the fine thermal structure of the SAL, inclusive of the sharp moisture gradients, reproducing the effect of tropical cyclone suppression which has been hypothesized by previous authors from observational and regional modeling perspectives. These effects cannot be fully represented at lower resolutions. Global resolution of a quarter of a degree is a minimum critical threshold to investigate Atlantic tropical cyclogenesis from a global modeling perspective

    Field evaluation of physical barriers against subterranean termites and ambrosia beetles in a CLT wall envelope system

    The effectiveness of physical barriers against subterranean termites was evaluated in a 34-week field test in coastal Mississippi by installing Obex11, a commercial polyethylene flashing, and Termimesh, a stainless-steel mesh in 3-ply 280mm(width) x 450mm(length) cross laminated timber (CLT) walls. Damage showed that both barriers performed significantly better than the no barrier control with respect to termite damage as evaluated by visual rating and mud tube length.  Obex11, however, like the no barrier control, was more vulnerable to attack by Ambrosiodmus minor (Stebbing), an invasive ambrosia beetle, with both treatments exhibiting significantly longer bore trails than those found in Termimesh.&nbsp

    AsterixDB: A Scalable, Open Source BDMS

    AsterixDB is a new, full-function BDMS (Big Data Management System) with a feature set that distinguishes it from other platforms in today's open source Big Data ecosystem. Its features make it well-suited to applications like web data warehousing, social data storage and analysis, and other use cases related to Big Data. AsterixDB has a flexible NoSQL style data model; a query language that supports a wide range of queries; a scalable runtime; partitioned, LSM-based data storage and indexing (including B+-tree, R-tree, and text indexes); support for external as well as natively stored data; a rich set of built-in types; support for fuzzy, spatial, and temporal types and queries; a built-in notion of data feeds for ingestion of data; and transaction support akin to that of a NoSQL store. Development of AsterixDB began in 2009 and led to a mid-2013 initial open source release. This paper is the first complete description of the resulting open source AsterixDB system. Covered herein are the system's data model, its query language, and its software architecture. Also included are a summary of the current status of the project and a first glimpse into how AsterixDB performs when compared to alternative technologies, including a parallel relational DBMS, a popular NoSQL store, and a popular Hadoop-based SQL data analytics platform, for things that both technologies can do. Also included is a brief description of some initial trials that the system has undergone and the lessons learned (and plans laid) based on those early "customer" engagements

    Skeletal Muscle Acute and Chronic Metabolic Response to Essential Amino Acid Supplementation in Hypertriglyceridemic Older Adults

    BACKGROUND: Supplementation with essential amino acids (EAAs) + arginine is a promising nutritional approach to decrease plasma triglyceride (TG) concentrations, which are an independent risk factor for ischemic heart disease. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the effects of 8 wk of EAA supplementation on skeletal muscle basal metabolite concentrations and changes in metabolic response to acute EAA intake, with an emphasis on mitochondrial metabolism, in adults with elevated TGs to better understand the mechanisms of lowering plasma TGs. METHODS: Older adults with elevated plasma TG concentrations were given 22 g EAAs to ingest acutely before and after an 8-wk EAA supplementation period. Skeletal muscle biopsy samples were collected before and after acute EAA intake, both pre- and postsupplementation (4 biopsy samples), and targeted metabolomic analyses of organic acids and acylcarnitines were conducted on the specimens. RESULTS: Acute EAA intake resulted in increased skeletal muscle acylcarnitine concentrations associated with oxidative catabolism of the supplement components, with the largest increases found in acylcarnitines of branched-chain amino acid oxidative catabolism, including isovaleryl-carnitine (2200%) and 2-methylbutyryl-carnitine (2400%). The chronic EAA supplementation resulted in a 19% decrease in plasma TGs along with accumulation of long-chain acylcarnitines myristoyl- (90%) and stearoyl- (120%) carnitine in skeletal muscle and increases in succinyl-carnitine (250%) and the late-stage tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates fumarate (44%) and malate (110%). CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation with EAAs shows promise as an approach for moderate reduction in plasma TGs. Changes in skeletal muscle metabolites suggest incomplete fatty acid oxidation and increased anaplerosis, which suggests a potential bottleneck in fatty acid metabolism
