    Clinical Importance and Epidemiology of Quinolone Resistance

    The quinolone class of antimicrobial agents is one of most widely used classes of antimicrobial agents in outpatient and inpatient treatment. However, quinolone resistance in gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria has emerged and increased globally. This resistance limits the usefulness of quinolones in clinical practice. The review summarizes mechanisms of quinolone resistance and its epidemiology and implications in the most common clinical settings, urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, intraabdominal infections, skin and skin structure infections, and sexually transmitted diseases

    Staff Development Strategies for School Library and Media Centres: A Case Study of Selected Secondary Schools in Owerri Municipal, Imo State, Nigeria

    Staff Development is a sine-qua non to the provision of efficient library services at any level. The study sets to investigate staff development strategies in school libraries and Information centres in Owerri, Imo State Nigeria. Selfdesigned questionnaires were used in eliciting data for the study. Ten schools were used with 10 samples selected, the outcome of the study revealed the methods used in staff development in Nigerian school libraries and information centres, the factors limiting effective staff development were identified and recommendations were made in view of the identified problems. The study concluded that embarking on staff development among school library is also an improvement on the level of services rendered in school libaries

    Transport coefficients from the Boson Uehling-Uhlenbeck Equation

    We derive microscopic expressions for the bulk viscosity, shear viscosity and thermal conductivity of a quantum degenerate Bose gas above TCT_C, the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation. The gas interacts via a contact potential and is described by the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation. To derive the transport coefficients, we use Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation theory rather than the Chapman-Enskog approach. This approach illuminates the link between transport coefficients and eigenvalues of the collision operator. We find that a method of summing the second order contributions using the fact that the relaxation rates have a known limit improves the accuracy of the computations. We numerically compute the shear viscosity and thermal conductivity for any boson gas that interacts via a contact potential. We find that the bulk viscosity remains identically zero as it is for the classical case.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Capacity-building barriers to S3 implementation: an empirical framework for catch-up regions

    In this paper, we investigate the implementation challenge of Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3) in catch-up regional environments, through the lens of capacity building. We analyse capacity building at two levels: micro-level (individual organisations) and meso-level (regional inter-organisational networks). We use empirical evidence from 50 interviews conducted in the period 2015–2017 from two Greek regions dramatically hit by the economic crisis (Crete and Central Macedonia). We argue that in the Cretan and Central Macedonian context, the difficulty of implementing S3 is directly linked with firms’ lack of adsorptive capability to exploit university-generated knowledge, university knowledge that is too abstract for firm’s to easily acquire, as well as to the capability of regional actors to build inter-organisational networking that fits their strategic needs

    The simplicity project: easing the burden of using complex and heterogeneous ICT devices and services

    As of today, to exploit the variety of different "services", users need to configure each of their devices by using different procedures and need to explicitly select among heterogeneous access technologies and protocols. In addition to that, users are authenticated and charged by different means. The lack of implicit human computer interaction, context-awareness and standardisation places an enormous burden of complexity on the shoulders of the final users. The IST-Simplicity project aims at leveraging such problems by: i) automatically creating and customizing a user communication space; ii) adapting services to user terminal characteristics and to users preferences; iii) orchestrating network capabilities. The aim of this paper is to present the technical framework of the IST-Simplicity project. This paper is a thorough analysis and qualitative evaluation of the different technologies, standards and works presented in the literature related to the Simplicity system to be developed

    ECU-oriented models for NOx prediction. Part 2: adaptive estimation by using an NOx sensor

    The implantation of nitrogen oxide sensors in diesel engines is necessary in order to track emissions at the engine exhaust line for diagnosis and control of the after-treatment devices. However, the use of models is still necessary since the sensor outputs are delayed and filtered. The present paper deals with the problem of the nitrogen oxide estimation in two parts; Part 1 deals with a control-oriented model for the nitrogen oxide estimation, while Part 2 presents data fusion of the model and the sensor to improve the estimation, which is presented in the following. The use of models for the nitrogen oxide estimation is an alternative but the drift and the ageing are still issues. In order to overcome this problem, the fusion of different signals can be carried out in a smart way by means of a Kalman filter. There exist different ways of presenting this fusion, from directly tracking the bias to updating the model parameters. For this, different algorithms are proposed in this paper with the aim of correcting the model output. Furthermore, the estimation of the actual nitrogen oxide concentration, by preventing sensor delay and filtering, is also integrated in the algorithm, which is a suitable strategy for combining nitrogen oxide sensors and models on an onboard basis.Guardiola, C.; Climent, H.; Pla Moreno, B.; Blanco-Rodriguez, D.     Steady State Thermodynamics of Langevin Systems

    We study Langevin dynamics describing nonequilibirum steady states. Employing the phenomenological framework of steady state thermodynamics constructed by Oono and Paniconi [Prog. Theor. Phys. Suppl. {\bf130}, 29 (1998)], we find that the extended form of the second law which they proposed holds for transitions between steady states and that the Shannon entropy difference is related to the excess heat produced in an infinitely slow operation. A generalized version of the Jarzynski work relation plays an important role in our theory.Comment: 4 page

    Cyanidiophyceae in Iceland: Plastid rbcL gene elucidates origin and dispersal of extremophilic Galdieria sulphuraria and G. maxima (Galdieriaceae, Rhodophyta)

    The Cyanidiophyceae are a group of unicellular organisms that diverged from ancestral red algae around 1.3 billion years ago. Present-day species are restricted to hot springs and geothermal habitats from around the world. Because of discontinuous geothermal environments, the distribution patterns and dispersal modes of the cyanidiophycean species are poorly understood. Iceland is the third largest island in the Atlantic Ocean and has intense underground volcanic activity that generates broad hydrothermal areas with different ecological conditions that are excellent for thermoacidophilic microfloral development. We analyzed populations to address the Icelandic cyanidiophycean biodiversity and dispersal. A global rbcL phylogeny showed two main populations inhabiting Iceland, Galdieria sulphuraria and G. maxima. Their areas of distribution are not completely superimposed because they coexisted only in New Zealand, Kamchatka (Russia), Japan, and Iceland. Because of the strong monophyly of Icelandic species with Japanese and Russian species, we hypothesized an origin and dispersion of Icelandic G. suphuraria and G. maxima from northeastern Asia. On the basis of network analysis of rbcL haplotypes, it is likely that the southwestern region of Iceland is the diversity center of both G. sulphuraria and G. maxima

    Pairwise comparison matrices and the error-free property of the decision maker

    Pairwise comparison is a popular assessment method either for deriving criteria-weights or for evaluating alternatives according to a given criterion. In real-world applications consistency of the comparisons rarely happens: intransitivity can occur. The aim of the paper is to discuss the relationship between the consistency of the decision maker—described with the error-free property—and the consistency of the pairwise comparison matrix (PCM). The concept of error-free matrix is used to demonstrate that consistency of the PCM is not a sufficient condition of the error-free property of the decision maker. Informed and uninformed decision makers are defined. In the first stage of an assessment method a consistent or near-consistent matrix should be achieved: detecting, measuring and improving consistency are part of any procedure with both types of decision makers. In the second stage additional information are needed to reveal the decision maker’s real preferences. Interactive questioning procedures are recommended to reach that goal
