Skeletal muscle as an experimental model of choice to study tissue aging and rejuvenation.
Skeletal muscle is among the most age-sensitive tissues in mammal organisms. Significant changes in its resident stem cells (i.e., satellite cells, SCs), differentiated cells (i.e., myofibers), and extracellular matrix cause a decline in tissue homeostasis, function, and regenerative capacity. Based on the conservation of aging across tissues and taking advantage of the relatively well-characterization of the myofibers and associated SCs, skeletal muscle emerged as an experimental system to study the decline in function and maintenance of old tissues and to explore rejuvenation strategies. In this review, we summarize the approaches for understanding the aging process and for assaying the success of rejuvenation that use skeletal muscle as the experimental system of choice. We further discuss (and exemplify with studies of skeletal muscle) how conflicting results might be due to variations in the techniques of stem cell isolation, differences in the assays of functional rejuvenation, or deciding on the numbers of replicates and experimental cohorts
Improvement of the guiding performances of near infrared organic/inorganic channel waveguides
New sol-gel derived organic/inorganic hybrid single mode waveguides devices
have been developed for telecommunication applications in the two near infrared
windows at 1310 and 1550 nm. The overall procedure of fabrication of these
devices is described and the refractive indices of the guiding, the buffer and
the protective layers are adjusted by a precise control of the materials'
composition. Due to the improvement of the composition of the guiding layer,
the attenuation losses are significantly decreased to 0.8 dB/cm and 2dB/cm at
respectively 1310 and 1550 nm
Post-Newtonian factorized multipolar waveforms for spinning, non-precessing black-hole binaries
We generalize the factorized resummation of multipolar waveforms introduced
by Damour, Iyer and Nagar to spinning black holes. For a nonspinning
test-particle spiraling a Kerr black hole in the equatorial plane, we find that
factorized multipolar amplitudes which replace the residual relativistic
amplitude f_{l m} with its l-th root, \rho_{l m} = f_{l m}^{1/l}, agree quite
well with the numerical amplitudes up to the Kerr-spin value q \leq 0.95 for
orbital velocities v \leq 0.4. The numerical amplitudes are computed solving
the Teukolsky equation with a spectral code. The agreement for prograde orbits
and large spin values of the Kerr black hole can be further improved at high
velocities by properly factoring out the lower-order post-Newtonian
contributions in \rho_{l m}. The resummation procedure results in a better and
systematic agreement between numerical and analytical amplitudes (and energy
fluxes) than standard Taylor-expanded post-Newtonian approximants. This is
particularly true for higher-order modes, such as (2,1), (3,3), (3,2), and
(4,4) for which less spin post-Newtonian terms are known. We also extend the
factorized resummation of multipolar amplitudes to generic mass-ratio,
non-precessing, spinning black holes. Lastly, in our study we employ new,
recently computed, higher-order post-Newtonian terms in several subdominant
modes, and compute explicit expressions for the half and one-and-half
post-Newtonian contributions to the odd-parity (current) and even-parity (odd)
multipoles, respectively. Those results can be used to build more accurate

Use of Estimating Equations for Dosing Antimicrobials in Patients with Acute Kidney Injury Not Receiving Renal Replacement Therapy.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) can potentially lead to the accumulation of antimicrobial drugs with significant renal clearance. Drug dosing adjustments are commonly made using the Cockcroft-Gault estimate of creatinine clearance (CLcr). The Modified Jelliffe equation is significantly better at estimating kidney function than the Cockcroft-Gault equation in the setting of AKI. The objective of this study is to assess the degree of antimicrobial dosing discordance using different glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimating equations. This is a retrospective evaluation of antimicrobial dosing using different estimating equations for kidney function in AKI and comparison to Cockcroft-Gault estimation as a reference. Considering the Cockcroft-Gault estimate as the criterion standard, antimicrobials were appropriately adjusted at most 80.7% of the time. On average, kidney function changed by 30 mL/min over the course of an AKI episode. The median clearance at the peak serum creatinine was 27.4 (9.3⁻66.3) mL/min for Cockcroft Gault, 19.8 (9.8⁻47.0) mL/min/1.73 m² for MDRD and 20.5 (4.9⁻49.6) mL/min for the Modified Jelliffe equations. The discordance rate for antimicrobial dosing ranged from a minimum of 8.6% to a maximum of 16.4%. In the event of discordance, the dose administered was supra-therapeutic 100% of the time using the Modified Jelliffe equation. Use of estimating equations other than the Cockcroft Gault equation may significantly alter dosing of antimicrobials in AKI
Newinsights in the ontogeny and taphonomy of the Devonian acanthodian Triazeugacanthus affinis from the Miguasha Fossil-Lagerstatte, Eastern Canada
Progressive biomineralization of a skeleton occurs during ontogeny in most animals. In fishes, larvae are poorly mineralized, whereas juveniles and adults display a progressively more biomineralized skeleton. Fossil remains primarily consist of adult specimens because the fossilization of poorly-mineralized larvae and juveniles necessitates exceptional conditions. The Miguasha Fossil-Lagerstatte is renowned for its Late Devonian vertebrate fauna, revealing the exceptional preservation of fossilized ontogenies for 14 of the 20 fish species from this locality. The mineralization of anatomical structures of the acanthodian Triazeugacanthus affinis from Miguasha are compared among larval, juvenile and adult specimens using Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry. Chemical composition of anatomical structures of Triazeugacanthus reveals differences between cartilage and bone. Although the histology and anatomy is well-preserved, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry shows that the original chemical composition of bone is altered by diagenesis; the mineral phase of the bone (i.e., hydroxyapatite) is modified chemically to form more stable carbonate-fluorapatite. Fluorination occurring in mineralized skeletal structures of adult Triazeugacanthus is indicative of exchanges between groundwater and skeleton at burial, whereas the preservation of larval soft tissues is likely owing to a rapid burial under anoxic conditions. Field-Induced Quantum Critical Point in CeCoIn5
The resistivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 was measured as a
function of temperature, down to 25 mK and in magnetic fields of up to 16 T
applied perpendicular to the basal plane. With increasing field, we observe a
suppression of the non-Fermi liquid behavior, rho ~ T, and the development of a
Fermi liquid state, with its characteristic rho = rho_0 + AT^2 dependence. The
field dependence of the T^2 coefficient shows critical behavior with an
exponent of 1.37. This is evidence for a field-induced quantum critical point
(QCP), occuring at a critical field which coincides, within experimental
accuracy, with the superconducting critical field H_c2. We discuss the relation
of this field-tuned QCP to a change in the magnetic state, seen as a change in
magnetoresistance from positive to negative, at a crossover line that has a
