    Ball throwing on spheres

    Get PDF
Ball throwing on Euclidean spaces has been considered for a while. A suitable renormalization leads to a fractional Brownian motion as limit object. In this paper we investigate ball throwing on spheres. A different behavior is exhibited: we still get a Gaussian limit but which is no longer a fractional Brownian motion. However the limit is locally self-similar when the self-similarity index HH is less than 1/2

On the excursion area of perturbed Gaussian fields

We investigate Lipschitz-Killing curvatures for excursion sets of random fields on R2\mathbb R^2 under small spatial-invariant random perturbations. An expansion formula for mean curvatures is derived when the magnitude of the perturbation vanishes, which recovers the Gaussian Kinematic Formula at the limit by contiguity of the model. We develop an asymptotic study of the perturbed excursion area behaviour that leads to a quantitative non-Gaussian limit theorem, in Wasserstein distance, for fixed small perturbations and growing domain. When letting both the perturbation vanish and the domain grow, a standard Central Limit Theorem follows. Taking advantage of these results, we propose an estimator for the perturbation which turns out to be asymptotically normal and unbiased, allowing to make inference through sparse information on the field

Cd-rom traitant des techniques de sédation, tranquillisation et d'anesthésie générale chez les carnivores domestiques

    Get PDF

The Accidental Place: Louis Armstrong Park Out of Place on the North Side

The failed New Orleans Cultural Center Complex was cultural genocide to an area of the neighborhood known as Treme, where a tribute to the jazz great and native son, Louis Armstrong, was planned as an afterthought. The questions remain, was the planning and building of Louis Armstrong Park responsible for the genocide of the Treme neighborhood, is the park an appropriate use of land, and what are the prospects for the park\u27s future? This thesis examines the cultural gumbo of New Orleans history, explores the early days of Louis Armstrong and the development of jazz, sets the record straight by vindicating the Louis Armstrong Park as the culprit for demolition in Treme, and takes a look at the Back ‘o Town as a tribute to him

Assessment of tillage systems in organic farming: influence of soil structure on microbial biomass. First results

    Get PDF
Soil tillage modifies environmental conditions of soil microorganisms and their ability to release nitrogen. We compare the influence of reduced tillage (RT) and mouldboard ploughing (MP) on the soil microbial functioning in organic farming. In order to connect soil structure generated by these tillage systems on the soil microbial biomass we adopt a particular sampling scheme based on the morphological characterisation of the soil structure by the description of the soil profile. This method reveals the influence of soil structure on soil microbial biomass and allows a more precise assessment of the impact of tillage managements on the soil microbial functioning

In this paper is exposed how José Martí behaved concerning foreign interest (USA, Great Britain, France, Germany) when he disembarked in Cuba at the right beginning of the uprising. Martí explained that the revolution aspired to complete national sovereignty but respected foreigners’ live and ownership. He declared the country open to free world trade, which implies the end of the Spanish monopoly and the impossibility for another one (United States, obviously). Tactically, he neutralized the enemy propaganda. Strategically, he tried to build an equilibrium between foreign states in that region, as a future guarantee for independence, peace and prosperity for the free West Indies, this world crossroads

Comparison of Seegene Anyplex II HPV28 with the PGMY-CHUV Assay for Human Papillomavirus Genotyping.

The Anyplex II HPV28 (H28; Seegene) is a new semiquantitative real-time multiplex PCR assay for screening and genotyping 28 human papillomaviruses (HPV) in only 2 reaction wells. H28 was compared to the PGMY-CHUV assay (PG) with 309 archival DNA samples from cervical smears collected over 8 years in our laboratory. H28 and PG were fully concordant at the genotypic level on 228 (73.8%) out of 309 samples: 27 HPV negative and 201 HPV positive. The 201 fully concordant positive samples corresponded to single infections (n = 145) and to multiple infections (2 genotypes, n = 38; 3 to 5 genotypes, n = 18). The remaining 81 samples (26.2%) were either partially concordant (n = 64, 20.7%) or fully discordant (n = 17, 5.5%). While genotype-specific agreement was nearly perfect (κ = 0.877), HPV51 was significantly less well detected by H28 and the converse was observed for HPV40, -42, -54, and -68. Sequencing of PG amplicons confirmed HPV51 discordants and suggested the involvement of a possibly local HPV51 subtype. Mismatches in the PGMY09 primers to HPV68a explained most of the HPV68 discordants, confirming the specificity of H28 toward HPV68. With PG as a reference, the sensitivity and specificity of H28 were 93.4% and 99.0%, respectively. Considering H28 as a reference, the sensitivity and specificity of PG were 83.8% and 99.6%, respectively. H28 is a very sensitive and specific HPV genotyping assay suitable for research and clinical use as an adjunct to a clinically validated test. H28 semiquantitative readout ought to be evaluated for primary cervical cancer screening

Chord-distribution functions and Rice formulae. Application to random media.

    Get PDF
We consider an isotropic bi-phasic (pore and solid) medium, draw many lines through it, and see each line as a one-dimensional level-cut process with values 0 or 1 according to whether a regular stationary process XX is less or greater than a given level. The lengths of time intervals when XX is in a given phase are named chord functions. We are interested into obtaining information on chord functions in order to get most characterizations of the medium such as the volume fractions, the two-point correlation function or the specific surface area. Working with the Palm probability measure and using level crossings techniques, Rice methods in particular, allow to obtain the exact analytical formula of the chord-distribution function as well as the joint distribution function of two successive chords and the two-point correlation function. Also the ``Independent Interval Assumption'' is discussed
