    Get PDF
In this data article, information is provided on sequences of KT-HAK-KUP transporters from green algae and basal land plants. A data set is offered containing sequences corresponding to the chlorophyte algae Chlamydomonas eustigma, Gonium pectorale and Coccomyxa subellipsoidea, the charophyte algae Coleochaete orbicularis and Klebsormidium flaccidum, the bryophyte Sphagnum fallax, the marchantophyte Marchantia polymorpha and the gymnosperm Pinus taeda, which have been not formerly analyzed. In addition, an analysis of similarity scores among representatives of the clusters recognized in photosynthetic green organisms (namely, chlorophyte algae, charophyte algae, basal embryophytes and higher embryophytes) is performed as well as an analysis of membrane topology for them.Fil: Santa Maria, Guillermo Esteban. Internal efficiency of nutrient utilization: what is it and how to measure it during vegetative plant growth?

    Get PDF
Efficient use of the resources required by plants to sustain crop production is considered an important objective in agriculture. In this context, the idea of developing crops with an enhanced ability to utilize mineral nutrients already taken up by roots has been proposed. In recent years powerful tools that allow the association of phenotypic variation with high-resolution genetic maps of crop plants have also emerged. To take advantage of these tools, accurate methods are needed to estimate the internal efficiency of nutrient utilization (ENU) at the whole-plant level, which requires using suitable conceptual and experimental approaches. Here we highlight some inconsistencies in the definitions of ENU commonly used for ENU ‘phenotyping’ at the vegetative stage and suggest that it would be convenient to adopt a dynamic definition. The idea that ENU should provide information about the relationship between carbon and mineral nutrient economies mainly during the period under which growth is actually affected by low internal nutrient concentration is here advocated as a guide for the selection of adequate operational ENU formulae for the vegetative stage. The desirability of using experimental approaches that allow removal of the influence of nutrient acquisition efficiency on ENU estimations is highlighted. It is proposed that the use of simulation models could help refine the conclusions obtained through these experimental procedures. Some potential limitations in breeding for high ENU are also considered.Fil: Santa Maria, Guillermo Esteban. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Manufacturing strategy in Inter-Firm collaborations: a proposed model

    Get PDF
The origin of the project comes from two main aspects. First, considering the concept of Skinner (1968), who stressed the need to attach a crucial importance of manufacturing strategy as a competitive weapon for companies. And second, blending it with the current scenario of relationships between firms all around the world, in response of the aggressive worldwide competition, in which the task of sustaining competitive advantage has become even tougher. The current project attempts to study and analyze the manufacturing strategy field in a context of collaboration between firms, without forgetting the upper levels of strategic planning within a company, and how all this elements interact to each other and affect it. The author will be supported by a theoretical background based on the topic and the classification of different inter-firm collaboration linkages that could take place in this moment. It is been studied the different levels of strategy within a firm, and how each affects the manufacturing level, in a context of cooperation between organizations, based on different approaches to firm’s strategy, which could be valuable to the present work: Relational view, Resource-Based view and Extended Resource- Based view. Related with the case study, the author provides a brief case of U.S. automobile manufacturing firms, being focused in General Motors, which offers with valuable information of the present topic. In order to analyze the manufacturing strategy with more detail, the author considered to highlight the case of the Joint Venture undertook between GM and Toyota, which gives a strong empirical support to the work. In conclusion, this project provides a wide outlook of the scenario of collaboration linkages between firms, being focused on manufacturing decision areas, and taking into account all the elements involved, both theoretical and empirical data. It is basic to state that during the work, operations strategy and manufacturing strategy are treated as synonyms that are referred to the same concept, as it is seen along the bibliography and documents.Ingeniería Industria

Comparing teacher and student perspectives regarding the use of L1 in EFL chilean high school classrooms

Tesis (Profesor de Inglés para la Enseñanza Básica y Media y al grado académico de Licenciado en Educación)In the Chilean context, English teachers are commanded to perform one hundred percent English classes, but unfortunately, this is not accomplished in every context; hence, this study decided to explore and compare teachers’ and students’ perspectives regarding the use of L1 in the EFL Chilean high school classroom. A quantitative instrument was applied to a total population of 510 being both teachers and students from different districts of Santiago. The results obtained in this study portrayed that both teachers and students agreed on the L1 usage under different situations, these ranging from grammar explanation lessons to managing discipline

Diving inside a hairy black hole

We investigate the interior of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet charged black-hole with scalar hair. We find a variety of dynamical epochs, with the particular important feature that the Cauchy horizon is not present. This makes the violation of the no-hair theorem a possible tool to understand how might the strong cosmic censorship conjecture work.Fil: Grandi, Nicolás Esteban. Modified atmosphere packaging and dark/light refrigerated storage in green leafy vegetables have impact on nutritional value

    Get PDF
The consumption of zeaxanthin (Z) through a vegetable-rich diet is recommended to reduce the progression of age-related macular degeneration. Due to Z’s intrinsic dynamic character that results from its participation in the photoprotective xanthophyll cycle involving the carotenoids violaxanthin, antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin (VAZ), post-harvest handling practices and storage usually retain low amounts of this bioactive compound (compared to the rest of phytochemicals that are, in general, more stable). Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate in important consumed leafy vegetables the effects of different storage conditions on carotenoids (mainly Z) including i) packaging under three modified atmospheres (MAs), ii) light refrigerated supermarket storage and iii) dark refrigerated domestic storage. The results showed that an MA with low O2 and high CO2 enhanced the Z content under light. Moreover, both light and dark refrigerated storage showed dynamic and circadian pigment changes that enhanced the total VAZ pool. These results can contribute to generating practical recommendations for industries, supermarkets, and consumers when high Z content is a nutritional target.RE received a Juan de la Cierva-incorporación grant IJCI-2014-21452. Critical reflection on the learning unit and the research project

    Get PDF
This project contains some critical reflections about the learning unit and the research project made for this Master's Degree. Language and culture go hand in hand. Language cannot be explained without culture. Furthermore, students need real-life contents in order to be able to correctly use the language. That is why the research project and the learning unit included seek for that aim. Students need real situations and real-life elements to set the language and the culture into a context

An Overview of Vanadium and Cell Signaling in Potential Cancer Treatments

    Get PDF
Vanadium is an ultratrace element present in higher plants, animals, algae, and bacteria. In recent years, vanadium complexes have been studied to be considered as a representative of a new class of nonplatinum metal anticancer drugs. Nevertheless, the study of cell signaling pathways related to vanadium compounds has scarcely been reported on and reviewed thus far; this information is highly critical for identifying novel targets that play a key role in the anticancer activity of these compounds. Here, we perform a review of the activity of vanadium compounds over cell signaling pathways on cancer cells and of the underlying mechanisms, thereby providing insight into the role of these proteins as potential new molecular targets of vanadium complexes.Fil: Ferretti, Valeria Alejandra.
