On the electroweak phase transition in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model
We study the finite-temperature effective potential of the Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model, in the limit of only one light Higgs boson.
Because of the large top Yukawa coupling, there can be significant differences
with respect to the Standard Model case: for given values of the Higgs and top
masses, little supersymmetry breaking in the stop sector can make the phase
transition more strongly first-order. After including the full structure of the
stop mass matrix, the most important experimental constraints and the leading
plasma effects, we find that the present limits on Higgs and squark masses are
still compatible with the scenario of electroweak baryogenesis, in a small
region of parameter space corresponding to m_h \simlt 70 \gev and \msba

Vacuum Stability, Perturbativity, and Scalar Singlet Dark Matter
We analyze the one-loop vacuum stability and perturbativity bounds on a
singlet extension of the Standard Model (SM) scalar sector containing a scalar
dark matter candidate. We show that the presence of the singlet-doublet quartic
interaction relaxes the vacuum stability lower bound on the SM Higgs mass as a
function of the cutoff and lowers the corresponding upper bound based on
perturbativity considerations. We also find that vacuum stability requirements
may place a lower bound on the singlet dark matter mass for given singlet
quartic self coupling, leading to restrictions on the parameter space
consistent with the observed relic density. We argue that discovery of a light
singlet scalar dark matter particle could provide indirect information on the

Product market competition with differentiated goods and social welfare in the presence of an industry-wide union
Mainstream locus communis indicates that a more competitive product market leads to higher social welfare levels. Using a Conjectural Variation (CV) model, this research note analyzes the effects on welfare of different degrees of product market competition in a duopoly with differentiated goods. Bargaining between the firms and the industry-wide union occurs under the Efficient Bargaining (EB) model. The work indicates that, with close substitute goods, social welfare is maximized for the inter- mediate levels of market competition, whereas more independent goods lead to the standard result of a high welfare level under competitive markets.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Coordinated optimization of visual cortical maps (II) Numerical studies
It is an attractive hypothesis that the spatial structure of visual cortical
architecture can be explained by the coordinated optimization of multiple
visual cortical maps representing orientation preference (OP), ocular dominance
(OD), spatial frequency, or direction preference. In part (I) of this study we
defined a class of analytically tractable coordinated optimization models and
solved representative examples in which a spatially complex organization of the
orientation preference map is induced by inter-map interactions. We found that
attractor solutions near symmetry breaking threshold predict a highly ordered
map layout and require a substantial OD bias for OP pinwheel stabilization.
Here we examine in numerical simulations whether such models exhibit
biologically more realistic spatially irregular solutions at a finite distance
from threshold and when transients towards attractor states are considered. We
also examine whether model behavior qualitatively changes when the spatial
periodicities of the two maps are detuned and when considering more than 2
feature dimensions. Our numerical results support the view that neither minimal
energy states nor intermediate transient states of our coordinated optimization
models successfully explain the spatially irregular architecture of the visual
cortex. We discuss several alternative scenarios and additional factors that

Prevalencia de sífilis y características del comportamiento de los jóvenes indígenas del Paraguay, 2016
El objetivo fue determinar la prevalencia de sífilis y características de comportamiento de los jóvenes indígenas del Paraguay en el 2016. Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo de corte transversal con muestro probabilístico estratificado bietapico, que incluyó a jóvenes indígenas de 15 a 18 años de cinco familias lingüísticas de Paraguay. Se utilizó un cuestionario estructurado y para el tamizaje de sífilis se utilizó una test rápido treponémico y para confirmar los resultados reactivos se realizó VDRL, considerando como resultado positivo si el test rápido era positivo + VDRL positivo a una dilución de 1:4 o mayor y si la VDRL era menor a 1:4 con TPHA positivo. Los resultados se expresan como medidas de tendencia central, dispersión y proporciones. Ingresaron al estudio 546 jóvenes de 15 a 18 años, el 67,03% era del sexo femenino. Se identificaron 36 casos de sífilis, que representa una prevalencia de 6,6% [IC95%: 4,7-9,0]. Mayor prevalencia de sífilis se observó en los jóvenes que consumieron alcohol en la última relación sexual 20,6% (14/68) (p<0,001), sexo transaccional 40% (2/5) (p=0,010) y no utilización de condón 20,6% (14/68) (p<0,001). Se encontró una alta prevalencia de sífilis en la población juvenil indígena, relacionada al consumo de alcohol en la última relación, práctica de sexo transaccional y no utilización de preservativos. Se recomienda la implementación de estrategias específicas con abordaje intercultural apropiadas para una población joven, orientadas a disminuir las prácticas de riesgo y promocionar la utilización de preservativos
A Fluorescent Probe for Diacetyl Detection
A water-soluble fluorescent probe, rhodamine B hydrazide (RBH), was prepared and its properties for recognition of diacetyl were studied. The method employs the reaction of diacetyl with RBH, a colorless and non-fluorescent rhodamine B spiro form derivative to give a pink-colored fluorescent substance. In weakly acidic media, RBH reacts more selectively with diacetyl than with other carbonyls, causing a large increase in fluorescence intensity and thereby providing an easy assay for the determination of diacetyl
High Diversity of vacA and cagA Helicobacter pylori Genotypes in Patients with and without Gastric Cancer
BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to assess the topographical distribution of H. pylori in the stomach as well as the vacA and cagA genotypes in patients with and without gastric cancer. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Three gastric biopsies, from predetermined regions, were evaluated in 16 patients with gastric cancer and 14 patients with dyspeptic symptoms. From cancer patients, additional biopsy specimens were obtained from tumor centers and margins; among these samples, the presence of H. pylori vacA and cagA genotypes was evaluated. Positive H. pylori was 38% and 26% in biopsies obtained from the gastric cancer and non-cancer groups, respectively (p = 0.008), and 36% in tumor sites. In cancer patients, we found a preferential distribution of H. pylori in the fundus and corpus, whereas, in the non-cancer group, the distribution was uniform (p = 0.003). A majority of the biopsies were simultaneously cagA gene-positive and -negative. The fundus and corpus demonstrated a higher positivity rate for the cagA gene in the non-cancer group (p = 0.036). A mixture of cagA gene sizes was also significantly more frequent in this group (p = 0.003). Ninety-two percent of all the subjects showed more than one vacA gene genotype; s1b and m1 vacA genotypes were predominantly found in the gastric cancer group. The highest vacA-genotype signal-sequence diversity was found in the corpus and 5 cm from tumor margins. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: High H. pylori colonization diversity, along with the cagA gene, was found predominantly in the fundus and corpus of patients with gastric cancer. The genotype diversity observed across systematic whole-organ and tumor sampling was remarkable. We find that there is insufficient evidence to support the association of one isolate with a specific disease, due to the multistrain nature of H. pylori infection shown in this work
Mechanics of fragmentation of crocodile skin and other thin films
Fragmentation of thin layers of materials is mediated by a network of cracks on its surface. It is commonly seen in dehydrated paintings or asphalt pavements and even in graphene or other two-dimensional materials, but is also observed in the characteristic polygonal pattern on a crocodile’s head. Here, we build a simple mechanical model of a thin film and investigate the generation and development of fragmentation patterns as the material is exposed to various modes of deformation. We find that the characteristic size of fragmentation, defined by the mean diameter of polygons, is strictly governed by mechanical properties of the film material. Our result demonstrates that skin fragmentation on the head of crocodiles is dominated by that it features a small ratio between the fracture energy and Young’s modulus, and the patterns agree well with experimental observations. Understanding this mechanics-driven process could be applied to improve the lifetime and reliability of thin film coatings by mimicking crocodile skin
Five views of a secret: does cognition change during middle adulthood?
This study examined five aspects of change (or
stability) in cognitive abilities in middle adulthood across a
12-year period. Data come from the Interdisciplinary Study
on Adult Development. The sample consisted of N = 346
adults (43.8 years on average, 48.6% female). In total, 11
cognitive tests were administered to assess fluid and crystallized
intelligence, memory, and processing speed. In a
first series of analyses, strong measurement invariance was
established. Subsequently, structural stability, differential
stability, stability of divergence, absolute stability, and the
generality of changes were examined. Factor covariances
were shown to be equal across time, implying structural
stability. Stability coefficients were around .90 for fluid and
crystallized intelligence, and speed, indicating high, yet not
perfect differential stability. The coefficient for memory
was .58. Only in processing speed the variance increased
across time, indicating heterogeneity in interindividual
development. Significant mean-level changes emerged,
with an increase in crystallized intelligence and decline in
the other three abilities. A number of correlations among
