Differential growth of wrinkled biofilms
Biofilms are antibiotic-resistant bacterial aggregates that grow on moist
surfaces and can trigger hospital-acquired infections. They provide a classical
example in biology where the dynamics of cellular communities may be observed
and studied. Gene expression regulates cell division and differentiation, which
affect the biofilm architecture. Mechanical and chemical processes shape the
resulting structure. We gain insight into the interplay between cellular and
mechanical processes during biofilm development on air-agar interfaces by means
of a hybrid model. Cellular behavior is governed by stochastic rules informed
by a cascade of concentration fields for nutrients, waste and autoinducers.
Cellular differentiation and death alter the structure and the mechanical
properties of the biofilm, which is deformed according to Foppl-Von Karman
equations informed by cellular processes and the interaction with the
substratum. Stiffness gradients due to growth and swelling produce wrinkle
branching. We are able to reproduce wrinkled structures often formed by
biofilms on air-agar interfaces, as well as spatial distributions of
differentiated cells commonly observed with B. subtilis.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure
The Pluriliteracies Teaching for Learning approach (PTL) and its potentialities in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom in Secondary Education.
The teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) has assumed a prominent role in recent decades, resulting in the proliferation of bilingual programs within compulsory secondary education. However, the successful implementation of such programs often relies on methodologies and disciplines that prioritize content integration within the classroom. Consequently, it is necessary to advocate for the adoption of different approaches that prioritize English language learning and teaching as the primary focal point. It is proposed, therefore, in this master's thesis, the planning and future implementation of a didactic unit that follows the premises of the Pluriliteracies Approach to Teaching for Learning (PTL) in the context of English teaching within Compulsory Secondary Education.
“Everything is simple if you arrange the facts methodically": A Narratological Approach to Agatha Christie's Fictional Mysteries
Detective novels are one of the most popular literary genres in the English language.
However, although several writers have contributed to this literary formula, the most
prominent author is undoubtedly Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie (1890 - 1976). Christie
is a best-selling crime and mystery author who is often regarded as the genre's finest
exponent. This Bachelor’s Thesis is largely concerned with evaluating detective fiction,
especially the subgenres of thriller and whodunit, in two of Christie’s best-known
masterpieces: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926) and And Then There Were None
(1939). An in-depth examination of both works is provided here in order to prove the
representation of both subgenres in Christie’s ouvre and to contrast their differences, as
well as to determine which typology prevails in each caseLas novelas detectivescas son uno de los géneros literarios más populares en lengua
inglesa.
The project given to Team D of the 2018 Fall EPS group was to develop a machine that would recycle old 3D printed parts, support structures, and failed prints into new filament to use in a 3D printer. The main reason why this project was carried out was that the company Kaplock B.V. produces an excess of PLA waste. To solve this issue, the team created a recycler that reduces the waste produced by the company. This was an important solution because it would allow Kaplock B.V. to save money and create a circular lifecycle for the PLA. The machine that Team D created receives PLA in the form of old prints, failed prints, or support structures. The recycler then crushes the parts into smaller pieces, so the PLA can be melted into liquid. This liquid plastic is then pushed through a nozzle to ensure a correct diameter that meets industry standards. The final step in the process is to coil the filament onto a spool so it can be reused in a 3D printer.
This article analizes the polemic on religious images in Spain during the XVth century, and edits two nuclear texts for its reconstruction: two chapters from the apologetic works of Fr. Alonso de Espina and Pablo de Santa Maria. These texts represent opposite attitudes toward the "image problem" in a moment when images became a major issue of the religious conflict between jews, "conversos" and old christians.
