    Cosmology with running parameters

The experimental evidence that the equation of state (EOS) of the dark energy (DE) could be evolving with time/redshift (including the possibility that it might behave phantom-like near our time) suggests that there might be dynamical DE fields that could explain this behavior. We propose, instead, that a variable cosmological term (including perhaps a variable Newton's gravitational coupling too) may account in a natural way for all these features.Comment: Talk given at TAUP 2005, Zaragoza, Spain, 10-14 Sep 200

A SCALE DEVELOPMENT ON NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME IN DAVAO CITY: AN EXPLORATORY FACTOR ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
This paper aimed to develop a multidimensional framework of neighborhood crime in Davao City. The study employed a quantitative, non-experimental research design employing Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). A researcher-made instrument was utilized which was developed from in-depth interview of 12 selected residents, related literatures, and studies. To determine the validity of items, the researcher employed Content Validity Ratio (CVR) where ten (10) experts reviewed and validated the instrument. Item statements that passed the threshold of 0.80 were selected as part of the survey questionnaire. As a result, 43-item instrument was developed and utilized as data collection tool administered to 300 residents of Davao City as research participants. Using Exploratory Factor Analysis, 29 items remained in the model to compose the four (4) constructs after 17 rotations and iterations, therefore, making them the factors characterizing neighborhood crime in Davao City. Using thematic analysis, the factors were clustered as (1) breakdown of social control, (2) social disorder, (3) social deviance, (4) social disintegration.  Revealed structures of neighborhood crime can be an aid to frame policies and strategies to augment peacekeeping efforts in suppressing crime and other forms of delinquency, to strengthen ties within the community and lastly, to create a safe and secured society.  Article visualizations

Resolving Out-of-Vocabulary Words with Bilingual Embeddings in Machine Translation

    Get PDF
Out-of-vocabulary words account for a large proportion of errors in machine translation systems, especially when the system is used on a different domain than the one where it was trained. In order to alleviate the problem, we propose to use a log-bilinear softmax-based model for vocabulary expansion, such that given an out-of-vocabulary source word, the model generates a probabilistic list of possible translations in the target language. Our model uses only word embeddings trained on significantly large unlabelled monolingual corpora and trains over a fairly small, word-to-word bilingual dictionary. We input this probabilistic list into a standard phrase-based statistical machine translation system and obtain consistent improvements in translation quality on the English-Spanish language pair. Especially, we get an improvement of 3.9 BLEU points when tested over an out-of-domain test set

H(z)H(z) diagnostics on the nature of dark energy

The two dominant components of the cosmic budget today, pressureles matter and dark energy, may or may not be interacting with each other. Currently, both possibilities appear compatible with observational data. We propose several criteria based on the history of the Hubble factor that can help discern whether they are interacting and whether dark energy is phantom or quintessence in nature.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. The internationalisation of the Spanish SME sector

    Get PDF
As part of a wider research program, we analysed the theoretical framework and the recent developments of the process of internationalisation (transnationalisation) of the small- and medium-sized enterprises in Spain. The paper highlights the main trends and barriers of this internationalisation process. Methodology included document analyses, interviews, and the analyses of statistical databases

Pancreatite Aguda Necrosante — Caso Clínico

    Get PDF

Palabras clave: enseñanza universitaria y competencias, orientación universitaria, formación alo largo de la vida, formación para el empleo.UNIVERSITY EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR WORK:AN ANALYSIS FROM THE OPINION OF THE STUDENTSAbstractOne of the major challenges facing the University today is to achieve a closer link betweentraining and professional development of students. It comes from different fronts, insisting thatthe new titles that arise under the European Higher Education Area should be in line withsocial demands and enhance the professional development of graduates, so they draw bridgefor the transition from the formation to the occupation. Since it is currently at the University ofLa Laguna (Tenerife, Spain) in a process of specification and design of new titles, we wantedto know your opinion about students who are receiving training and if you consider that theyare able to join social life and work. The results reveal that training is currently available lacks sufficient practical training to enable students to have a real vision of the application ofknowledge in practice and the work done by professionals in the field directly related totraining. This information may be an interesting referent to translate in the new titles necessarymeasures to strengthen the evidence linking between education and performance.Key Words: university education and skills, college guidance, training throughout life, employment trainin

A Tight MIP Formulation of the Unit Commitment Problem with Start-up and Shut-down Constraints

    Get PDF
Abstract This paper provides the convex hull description for the following basic operating constraints of a single power generation unit in Unit Commitment (UC) problems: 1) generation limits, 2) startup and shutdown capabilities, and 3) minimum up and down times. Although the model does not consider some crucial constraints, such as ramping, the proposed constraints can be used as the core of any UC formulation, thus tightening the final UC model. We provide evidence that dramatic improvements in computational time are obtained by solving a self-UC problem for different case studies
