Characterising epithelial tissues using persistent entropy

In this paper, we apply persistent entropy, a novel topological statis- tic, for characterization of images of epithelial tissues. We have found out that persistent entropy is able to summarize topological and geomet- ric information encoded by -complexes and persistent homology. Persistent entropy: a scale-invariant topological statistic for analyzing cell arrangements

In this work, we develop a method for detecting differences in the topological distribution of cells forming epithelial tissues. In particular, we extract topological information from their images using persistent homology and a summary statistic called persistent entropy. This method is scale invariant, robust to noise and sensitive to global topological features of the tissue. We have found significant differences between chick neuroepithelium and epithelium of Drosophila wing discs in both, larva and prepupal stages. Besides, we have tested our method, with good results, with images of mathematical tesselations that model biological tissues

Biología de Conservación, nuevas estrategias bajo diferentes perspectivas

En esta revisión presentamos una síntesis de los principales cambios conceptuales que han ido modelando una ciencia relativamente joven como es la Biología de Conservación. La incorporación de técnicas y metodologías procedentes de disciplinas próximas ha sido uno de los factores que ha determinado la apertura de nuevas perspectivas en esta ciencia. El desarrollo de nuevos paradigmas como el del desarrollo sostenible o las consideraciones prácticas recogidas en foros internacionales como la Convención sobre Diversidad Biológica también han tenido una notable repercusión en su desarrollo. En cualquier caso no parece oportuno olvidar que la Biología de Conservación es una disciplina de "crisis". Nos enfrentamos a unas tasas de extinción y de pérdida de hábitats que no han sido conocidas con anterioridad a nivel planetario. Es por ello que los biólogos de conservación deberíamos tener siempre presente esta urgencia y las administraciones responsables no deberían escatimar recursos en este sentido, convencidos como estamos de que la crisis de biodiversidad tiene, y en un futuro próximo seguirá teniendo, repercusiones en todas las esferas de la actividad humana. En este sentido, sería un avance importante en nuestro país la inclusión de un nuevo plan de I+D+I en nuestra estrategia nacional de investigación sobre Biología de Conservación

Looking for Heaven: The Abandoned Children of Wuthering Heights in their Path from Isolation to Maturity.

Abstract The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how Emily Brontë’s novel, Wuthering Heights (1847), reflects the social and legal changes that affected the condition of children in their process of becoming adults. In a background of an increasing interest in infancy and its mental development, the novel depicts isolated children abandoned by their elders as well as their path from isolation to socialization. For this purpose, this essay is divided into three parts, the first one settles the children in the novel, carrying out an examination of their ages and providing a summary of the main legal aspects that affected them, with a special emphasis on the question of custody. The second part focuses on the environment in which the children grow up, giving prominence to the different types of imprisonment they suffer inside the family and distinguishing between a psychological and a physical one. Finally, the third part analyses the different relationships between the characters, highlighting the absence of maternal figures, and the defective fathers or adults to guide them, to conclude that only through socialization and literacy they are able to achieve a healthier adulthood. Resumen El objetivo de este ensayo es analizar cómo la novela de Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights (1748), refleja los cambios sociales y legales que afectaron al estado de los niños en su proceso de convertirse en adultos. En un contexto de creciente interés por la infancia y su desarrollo mental, la novela representa a niños aislados y abandonados por sus mayores, así como su camino del aislamiento a la socialización. Para este propósito, este ensayo se divide en tres partes, una primera para establecer las edades de los niños y resumir el panorama legal que les afecta, tratándose especialmente el tema de la custodia. La segunda partes se centra en el entorno de los niños en el seno familiar que los sitúa en un estado de doble encarcelamiento, psicológico y físico. Para terminar, la tercera parte analiza las diferentes relaciones sociales que se crean entre los personajes, haciendo hincapié en la ausencia de una figura materna o de padres capaces para guiarlos, para concluir que solo a través de la socialización y de la alfabetización los niños logarán encontrar el camino hacia una edad adulta saludable.<br /

El proceso de definir en matemáticas desde una perspectiva comognitiva

Los procesos de construcción de conocimiento matemático, tales como definir, probar y modelar son elementos clave en el aprendizaje del conocimiento matemático. En esta comunicación nos centramos en el uso que hacemos de herramientas teóricas provenientes de una perspectiva sociocultural, concretamente, el enfoque comognitivo, para tratar de caracterizar el cambio en el discurso matemático al abordar el proceso de definir. Unraveling the Molecular Determinants of Manual Therapy: An Approach to Integrative Therapeutics for the Treatment of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

Application of protocols without parameter standardization and appropriate controls has led manual therapy (MT) and other physiotherapy-based approaches to controversial outcomes. Thus, there is an urgency to carefully define standard protocols that elevate physiotherapy treatments to rigorous scientific demands. One way in which this can be achieved is by studying gene expression and physiological changes that associate to particular, parameter-controlled, treatments in animal models, and translating this knowledge to properly designed, objective, quantitatively-monitored clinical trials (CTs). Here, we propose a molecular physiotherapy approach (MPTA) requiring multidisciplinary teams, to uncover the scientific reasons behind the numerous reports that historically attribute health benefits to MT-treatments. The review focuses on the identification of MT-induced physiological and molecular responses that could be used for the treatment of fibromyalgia (FM) and chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME). The systemic effects associated to mechanical-load responses are considered of particular relevance, as they suggest that defined, low-pain anatomic areas can be selected for MT treatment and yet yield overall benefits, an aspect that might result in it being essential to treat FM. Power Systems Monitoring and Control using Telecom Network Management Standards

Historically, different solutions have been developed for power systems control and telecommunications network management environments. The former was characterized by proprietary solutions, while the latter has been involved for years in a strong standardization process guided by criteria of openness. Today, power systems control standardization is in progress, but it is at an early stage compared to the telecommunications management area, especially in terms of information modeling. Today, control equipment tends to exhibit more computational power, and communication lines have increased their performance. These trends hint at some conceptual convergence between power systems and telecommunications networks from a management perspective. This convergence leads us to suggest the application of well-established telecommunications management standards for power systems control. This paper shows that this is a real medium-to-long term possibility

Deployment of Digital Video and Audio Over Electrical SCADA Networks

With the arrival of new hardware and software technologies, supervisory control and data acquisition human-machine interfaces (SCADA/HMI), usually text-based, can now benefit from the advantages the inclusion of multimedia information brings. However, due to the special requirements imposed by such systems, integrating audio and video data into the SCADA interfaces is not a trivial task. Ordering the Soul. Senses and Psychology in 13th Century Encyclopaedias

The compilations of Bartholomew the Englishman, Thomas of Cantimpré, and Vincent of Beauvais (Speculum naturale) manifest in some manner how perception was considered during the first half of the 13th century. To properly understand perception, though, one has to first deal with the different conceptions of the soul. Two different views of the soul have often been distinguished in these encyclopaedias: one « physiological-medical » and the other « functional-philosophical ». In this paper, I offer an alternative interpretation based on a systematic analysis of the powers of the soul and the various explanations of their faculties. This leads to the conclusion that there are at least four different, yet interconnected views of the soul in the encyclopaedias. In addition, cognition itself is considered a process that encompasses several faculties. These faculties account either for an ascending path towards God or for intellectual knowledge (by means of abstraction).Les compilations de Barthélemy l'Anglais, de Thomas de Cantimpré et de Vincent de Beauvais (Speculum naturale) montrent comment la perception était considérée pendant la première moitié du XIIIe siècle. Mais pour bien comprendre cette conception de la perception, il faut d'abord s'intéresser à celle de l'âme. Deux conceptions différentes de l'âme ont souvent été distinguées dans ces encyclopédies: l'une "physiologico-médicale" et l'autre "fonctionnaliste-philosophique". Cet article propose une interprétation alternative basée sur une analyse systématique des pouvoirs de l'âme et des diverses explications de ses facultés. Cela conduit à la conclusion qu'il existe dans les encyclopédies de cette époque au moins quatre conceptions de l'âme, différentes mais interconnectées. En outre, la cognition elle-même est considérée comme un processus qui englobe plusieurs facultés. Ces facultés constituent soit un chemin ascendant vers Dieu, soit une connaissance intellectuelle (par le biais de l'abstraction)
