    Cambio de rumbo. Percepción del cine español en la temporada 2014

    This paper presents the conclusions of a study carried out during the audiovisual season of 2014 that was aimed at seeing the public’s perception of Spanish cinema. To obtain the quantitative data for the experiment, a field survey has been carried out, the mayor on this issue since 2009, with a total sampling of n=1244 people surveyed all over the country. Besides, this quantitative study has been backed up with further data from production, ticket sales and in-depth interviews to members of the film industry. Finally, a qualitative analysis has been carried out to delve into two further aspects: the audience’s tastes and the strategies used by film producers, film directors and other sectors within the film industry. The central aim of this study was to assess what was the perception of the Spanish public on their cinema. Our study reveals that regarding the films produced in Spain a change of trend has occurred. A majority of the people surveyed seem to feel closer and keen on the films of the last season, this being a conclusion reaffirmed with other control data, such as box office sales and impact on the audience.Este artículo presenta las conclusiones de una investigación realizada durante la temporada audiovisual del año 2014 sobre la percepción del cine español por el público. Para obtener los datos cuantitativos del experimento se ha realizado la mayor encuesta sobre este tema desde el 2009 con un muestreo de n=1.244 entrevistados en todo el estado. Además, se ha completado esta investigación cuantitativa con datos de producción, ventas de entradas y entrevistas en profundidad a miembros de la industria cinematográfica. Por último, se ha realizado un análisis cualitativo en el cual se ha indagado en los gustos de los espectadores y en las estrategias que han realizado los productores, directores y otros sectores de la industria fílmica. El objetivo central de este trabajo era valorar cuál era la percepción que el público español tenía sobre el cine de su país. Nuestra investigación pone de manifiesto que existe un cambio de tendencia en la relación con las películas producidas en España. Una mayoría de los encuestados se muestran más cercanos a los largometrajes de la última temporada, dato que se reafirma con otras cifras de control (ventas de entradas en taquilla e impacto en la audiencia)

    Antimicrobial resistance profiles of listeria monocytogenes and listeria innocua isolated from ready-to-eat products of animal origin in Spain

    The objective of this work was to investigate the antimicrobial resistance in Listeria spp. isolated from food of animal origin. A total of 50 Listeria strains isolated from meat and dairy products, consisting of 7 Listeria monocytogenes and 43 Listeria innocua strains, were characterized for antimicrobial susceptibility against nine antimicrobials. The strains were screened by real-time PCR for the presence of antimicrobial resistance genes: Tet M, tet L, mef A, msr A, erm A, erm B, lnu A, and lnu B. Multidrug resistance was identified in 27 Listeria strains, 4 belonging to L. monocytogenes. Resistance to clindamycin was the most common resistance phenotype and was identified in 45 Listeria strains; the mechanisms of resistance are still unknown. A medium prevalence of resistance to tetracycline (15 and 9 resistant and intermediate strains) and ciprofloxacin (13 resistant strains) was also found. Tet M was detected in Listeria strains with reduced susceptibility to tetracycline, providing evidence that both L. innocua and L. monocytogenes displayed acquired resistance. The presence of antimicrobial resistance genes in L. innocua and L. monocytogenes indicates that these genes may be transferred to commensal and pathogenic bacteria via the food chain; besides this, antibiotic resistance in L. monocytogenes could compromise the effective treatment of listeriosis in humans

    Evaluation of a Novel Commercial Real-Time PCR Assay for the Simultaneous Detection of Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Entamoeba histolytica

    Thorough independent assessment of the diagnostic performance of novel diagnostic assays is essential to ascertain their true usefulness and applicability in routine clinical practice. This is particularly true for commercially available kits based on multiplex real-time PCR aimed to detect and differentiate multiple pathogens in a single biological sample. Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Entamoeba histolytica are the most common diarrhea-causing protozoan species globally. Misdiagnosis is a concern for asymptomatic and chronic infections. Multiplexing, i.e., the detection of more than one parasite in a single test by real-time PCR, allows high diagnostic performance with favorable cost-effectiveness. We conducted a clinical evaluation of the VIASURE Cryptosporidium, Giardia, & E. histolytica real-time PCR assay (CerTest Biotec, San Mateo de Gallego, Spain) against a large panel (n = 358) of well-characterized DNA samples positive for Cryptosporidium spp. (n = 96), G. duodenalis (n = 115), E. histolytica (n = 25), and other parasitic species of the phyla Amoebozoa (n = 11), Apicomplexa (n = 14), Euglenozoa (n = 8), Heterokonta (n = 42), Metamonada (n = 37), Microsporidia (n = 4), and Nematoda (n = 6). DNA samples were obtained from clinical stool specimens or cultured isolates in a national reference center. Estimated sensitivity and specificity were 0.96 and 0.99 for Cryptosporidium spp., 0.94 and 1 for G. duodenalis, and 0.96 and 1 for E. histolytica, respectively. Positive and negative predictive values were calculated as 1 and 0.98 for Cryptosporidium spp., 0.99 and 0.98 for G. duodenalis, and 1 and 0.99 for E. histolytica, respectively. The assay identified six Cryptosporidium species (Cryptosporidium hominis, Cryptosporidium parvum, Cryptosporidium canis, Cryptosporidium felis, Cryptosporidium scrofarum, and Cryptosporidium ryanae) and four G. duodenalis assemblages (A, B, C, and F). The VIASURE assay provides rapid and accurate simultaneous detection and identification of the most commonly occurring species and genetic variants of diarrhea-causing parasitic protozoa in humans.     Gender differences in the incidence of and risk factors for hip fracture: A 16-year longitudinal study in a southern European population

    Objectives To analyze independently in men and women the incidence rate of and risk factors for hip fracture in a southern European population. Illiteracy, dementia, clinically significant depression and disability were factors to receive special emphasis. Study design A community sample of 4803 individuals aged over 55 years was assessed in a two-phase case-finding study in Zaragoza, Spain, and was followed up for 16 years. Medical history and psychiatric history were collected with standardized instruments, including the History and Aetiology Schedule, the Geriatric Mental State (GMS) scale, and a Risk Factors Questionnaire. Operational criteria were used to define covariates, including diagnostic criteria for both dementia and depression. The statistical analysis included calculations of incidence rate, IR; women/men incidence rate ratio (IRR); and Hazard Ratios (HR) in multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models. Main outcome measures Cases of hip fracture (International Classification of Diseases, WHO) identified in the treating hospitals, validated by blinded researchers. Results Hip fractures were more frequent among women than men (IRR = 3.1). Illiteracy (HR = 1.55) and depression (HR = 1.44) increased the risk in women, and smoking (HR = 2.13) and disability in basic activities of daily living (HR = 3.14) increased the risk in men. Dementia was associated with an increased risk in an univariate analysis, but the association disappeared (power = 85% in men, 95% in women) when disability was included in the multivariate models. Conclusions The IR of hip fractures was three times higher among women. Illiteracy and clinically significant depression among women and active smoking and disability (HR = 3.14) among men independently increased the risk, but dementia did not

    Early vascular endothelial complications after hematopoietic cell transplantation: Role of the endotheliopathy in biomarkers and target therapies development

    This work aims to review the role of endothelial dysfunction underlying the main complications appearing early after autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The endothelial damage as the pathophysiological substrate of sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) is well established. However, there is growing evidence of the involvement of endothelial dysfunction in other complications, such as acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) and transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMAs). Moreover, HCT-related endotheliopathy is not only limited to the HCT setting, as there is increasing evidence of its implication in complications derived from other cellular therapies. We also review the incidence and the risk factors of the main HCT complications and the biological evidence of the endothelial involvement and other linked pathways in their development. In addition, we cover the state of the art regarding the potential use of the biomarkers of endotheliopathy in the prediction, the early diagnosis, and the follow-up of the HCT complications and summarize current knowledge points to the endothelium and the other linked pathways described as potential targets for the prevention and treatment of HCT-complications.     Multicentric study on malignant pleural mesothelioma and non-occupational exposure to asbestos

    Insufficient evidence exists on the risk of pleural mesothelioma from non-occupational exposure to asbestos. A population-based case–control study was carried out in six areas from Italy, Spain and Switzerland. Information was collected for 215 new histologically confirmed cases and 448 controls. A panel of industrial hygienists assessed asbestos exposure separately for occupational, domestic and environmental sources. Classification of domestic and environmental exposure was based on a complete residential history, presence and use of asbestos at home, asbestos industrial activities in the surrounding area, and their distance from the dwelling. In 53 cases and 232 controls without evidence of occupational exposure to asbestos, moderate or high probability of domestic exposure was associated with an increased risk adjusted by age and sex: odds ratio (OR) 4.81, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.8–13.1. This corresponds to three situations: cleaning asbestos-contaminated clothes, handling asbestos material and presence of asbestos material susceptible to damage. The estimated OR for high probability of environmental exposure (living within 2000 m of asbestos mines, asbestos cement plants, asbestos textiles, shipyards, or brakes factories) was 11.5 (95% CI 3.5–38.2). Living between 2000 and 5000 m from asbestos industries or within 500 m of industries using asbestos could also be associated with an increased risk. A dose–response pattern appeared with intensity of both sources of exposure. It is suggested that low-dose exposure to asbestos at home or in the general environment carries a measurable risk of malignant pleural mesothelioma. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

    MicroRNA-155, is an oncogenic miRNA, highly expressed in B-cell malignancies, particularly in the non-Germinal Center B-cell or activated B-cell subtype of Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (non-GCB/ABC-DLBCL), where it is considered a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker. Thus, miR-155 inhibition represents an important therapeutic strategy for B-cell lymphomas.     Superconducting density of states and band structure at the surface of the candidate topological superconductor Au2 Pb

    The electronic band structure of Au2Pb has a Dirac cone which gaps when undergoing a structural transition into a low temperature superconducting phase. This suggests that the superconducting phase (Tc = 1.1 K) might hold topological properties at the surface. Here we make Scanning Tunneling Microscopy experiments on the surface of superconducting Au2Pb. We measure the superconducting gap and find a sizable superconducting density of states at the Fermi level. We discuss possible origins for this finding in terms of superconductivity induced into surface state

    Diagnostic and clinical experience of patients with pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration

    BACKGROUND: Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). OBJECTIVES: To assess PKAN diagnostic pathway, history, and burden across the spectrum of PKAN severity from patient and/or caregiver perspectives. METHODS: Caregivers of patients (n = 37) and patients themselves (n = 2) were interviewed in a validation study of the PKAN-Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scale. The current study used quartiles of the PKAN-ADL total score to divide patients by severity of impairment (Lowest, Second Lowest, Third Lowest, Highest). Diagnostic and treatment history, healthcare utilization, disease burden, and caregiver experience were compared between groups. RESULTS: The analyses included data from 39 patients. Mean age at PKAN symptom onset (P = 0.0007), initial MRI (P = 0.0150), and genetic testing (P = 0.0016) generally decreased across the PKAN severity spectrum. The mean duration of illness did not differ among PKAN severity groups (range, 9.7-15.2 years; P = 0.3029). First MRI led to diagnosis in 56.4% of patients (range, 30.0-90.0%). A mean (SD) of 13.0 (13.1) medical and 55.2 (78.5) therapy visits (eg, physical, speech) occurred in the past year. More patients in the higher PKAN severity groups experienced multiple current functional losses and/or earlier onset of problems (P-values \u3c 0.0500). Over half (56.8%) of caregivers experienced a change in employment because of caregiving. The percentage of patients requiring full-time caregiving increased across the PKAN severity spectrum (range, 11.1-100%; P = 0.0021). CONCLUSIONS: PKAN diagnosis was often delayed, most probably due to low awareness. Considerable burden of functional impairment and high healthcare utilization were found across the PKAN severity spectrum
