    The Plight of the Roma in Italy: Human Rights Injustices of a Feared Minority

    Human rights is unique in that it has a universal affect on everyone world-wide no matter his or her nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or economic standing. In order to narrow this down, the intention of this thesis is to explore a specific topic in regards to the overlying issue of human rights. This thesis provides evidence of the mistreatment and blatant racism that is inflicted upon the Roma living in Italy and this paper makes the claim that this is the fault of the Italian government. The methodology used for the community engagement portion of the thesis is a combination of surveys and an interview. The findings reveal the opinions and sentiments towards the Roma, immigration, and the Italian government on a personal level. The conclusion sums up the general synopsis of the thesis and uses it in order to draw solutions to the initial problem of human rights injustices against the Roma minority living in Italy

    Activation of cerebellum and basal ganglia during the observation and execution of manipulative actions

    Studies on action observation mostly described the activation of a network of cortical areas, while less investigation focused specifically on the activation and role of subcortical nodes. In the present fMRI study, we investigated the recruitment of cerebellum and basal ganglia during the execution and observation of object manipulation performed with the right hand. The observation conditions consisted in: (a) observation of manipulative actions; (b) observation of sequences of random finger movements. In the execution conditions, participants had to perform the same actions or movements as in (a) and (b), respectively. The results of conjunction analysis showed significant shared activations during both observation and execution of manipulation in several subcortical structures, including: (1) cerebellar lobules V, VI, crus I, VIIIa and VIIIb (bilaterally); (2) globus pallidus, bilaterally, and left subthalamic nucleus; (3) red nucleus (bilaterally) and left thalamus. These findings support the hypothesis that the action observation/execution network also involves subcortical structures, such as cerebellum and basal ganglia, forming an integrated network. This suggests possible mechanisms, involving these subcortical structures, underlying learning of new motor skills, through action observation and imitation

    Secondary flows have a huge impact on the losses in low pressure gas turbines and the inlet boundary layer state is one of the factors which most affects the endwall flow field. The present work aims at investigating secondary flows in a low-pressure gas turbine cascade by means of RANS simulations for two different inlet conditions. The equations are discretised in space by the Discontinuous Galerkin method and implicit time integration is adopted. Changes in the peculiarities of the flow field within the cascade passage are discussed. The results are compared with experimental and numerical data available in the literature

    RANS simulation of secondary flows in a low pressure turbine cascade: Influence of inlet boundary layer profile

    Secondary flows have a huge impact on losses generation in modern low pressure gas turbines (LPTs). At design point, the interaction of the blade profile with the end-wall boundary layer is responsible for up to 40% of total losses. Therefore, predicting accurately the end-wall flow field in a LPT is extremely important in the industrial design phase. Since the inlet boundary layer profile is one of the factors which most affects the evolution of secondary flows, the first main objective of the present work is to investigate the impact of two different inlet conditions on the end-wall flow field of the T106A, a well known LPT cascade. The first condition, labeled in the paper as C1, is represented by uniform conditions at the inlet plane and the second, C2, by a flow characterized by a defined inlet boundary layer profile. The code used for the simulations is based on the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) formulation and solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with the Spalart Allmaras turbulence model. Secondly, this work aims at estimating the influence of viscosity and turbulence on the T106A end-wall flow field. In order to do so, RANS results are compared with those obtained from an inviscid simulation with a prescribed inlet total pressure profile, which mimics a boundary layer. A comparison between C1 and C2 results highlights an influence of secondary flows on the flow field up to a significant distance from the end-wall. In particular, the C2 end-wall flow field appears to be characterized by greater over turning and under turning angles and higher total pressure losses. Furthermore, the C2 simulated flow field shows good agreement with experimental and numerical data available in literature. The C2 and inviscid Euler computed flow fields, although globally comparable, present evident differences. The cascade passage simulated with inviscid flow is mainly dominated by a single large and homogeneous vortex structure, less stretched in the spanwise direction and closer to the end-wall than vortical structures computed by compressible flow simulation. It is reasonable, then, asserting that for the chosen test case a great part of the secondary flows details is strongly dependent on viscous phenomena and turbulence

    Root Cause Analysis of Missed Appointments

    Objective: Missed appointments are a global issue, particularly in mental health. Missed appointments cause reduced client outcomes and increased stress on providers. This project is to reduce missed client appointments in a small mental health practice in the US. It is often assumed that clients miss appointments due to a lack of commitment to treatment. Method: In a small mental health practice setting, clients who had missed multiple appointments and would have received a letter of warning or termination were given a survey to find out what barriers were causing it to be challenging to maintain appointments. Then interventions were done to assist these patients/clients and help them keep their appointments, and a second survey was done to assess the interventions. Results: All of the participants who received an intervention maintained their appointments. Conclusion: The participants demonstrate that they are dedicated to treatment but have barriers causing them to miss multiple appointments. Contacting participants to find out the barriers and then assisting in removing those barriers significantly decreased missed appointments.D.N.P

The topic is articulated in a twofold dimension: -          the urban scale of the city, which is continuing to function even during the emergency, allowing us to believe that the tools in our hands are capable of being used in a more flexible way, both from a political-based and a design-based perspective;-          the domestic sphere, whose connotations make the house versatile and flexible in the context of the progress and technological advancement that is now happening in the community and for this reason the space must meet the requirements of adaptability to operate perfectly even as a workplace.      Recentemente, a pesquisa em ciência social tem dado mais atenção às intrincadas relações entre biografia e história. Na pesquisa educacional, esse foco resultou numa explosão do interesse na narrativa pessoal como uma articulação da experiência individual e coletiva com os mundos social, político e cultural da educação. Esse interesse na narrativa pessoal deu, por conseqüência, proeminência ao trabalho em história oral. O crescimento da atração intuitiva das narrativas pessoais, no entanto, ganhou uma complacência metodológica. O que significa coletar e analisar narrativas pessoais? Como os narradores verbalizam suas narrativas e narram sua voz? Que papel exerce o jogo das entrevistas no desdobramento dessas narrativas? O que significam essas questões no contexto das histórias orais, que são narrativas em que a dinâmica entrevistador-narrador também é mediatizada pela natureza da memória? Este artigo examina o que a autora aprendeu sobre histórias orais das narrativas que a autora pôde, e não pôde,coletar.Palavras-chave: história oral, educação colonial, educação em Moçambique.   Abstract Social science inquiry has increasingly focused on the intricate relations between biography and history. In educational inquiry, this focus has led to an explosion of interest in the personal narrative as an articulation of individual and collective experience with the social, political and cultural worlds of education. This interest in the personal narrative has in tum given prominence to work in oral history as a research strategy. The growing intuitive appeal of personal narratives, however, has led to certain methodological complacency. What does it mean to collect and analyze personal narratives? How do narrators voice their narratives and narrate their voice? What role do interviewers play in the unfolding of these narratives? What do these questions mean in the context of oral histories, which are narratives where the interviewer-narrator dynamic is also mediated by the nature of memory? This paper examines what the author learned about oral histories from the narratives the author could, and could not, collect. Keywords: oral history, colonial history, education of Mozambique.

    LARGE EDDY SIMULATION ANALYSIS OF FLUID JETS IN CROSS FLOW

    This work has been carried out at the "Laboratoire de Modélisation et Simulation en mécanique des Fluides" of CEA during a stage of 6 months. The main subject of this work involves jets in cross flow, which are of fundamental industrial importance and play an important role in the validation of turbulence models. Two jet configurations are investigated with the TrioCFD code: • a tee junction of circular tubes where a hot jet discharges into a cold main flow. • a rectangular channel discharging a jet marked by a scalar into a main channel flow. The tee-junction configuration is very important for the phenomena of thermal fatigue. The OECD/NEA benchmark on the Vattenfall tee junction flow is analyzed. This test case is selected because, beside the experimental results, various calculations with several turbulence modeling approaches have been published. A Large Eddie Simulation (LES) modeling and calculation strategy is developed and validated on these data for jets in crossflow under thermal fatigue conditions. The rectangular jet configuration is important for basic physical understanding and modeling and has been analysed experimentally at CEA by previous studies. Such work was focused on the turbulent mixing between a rectangular channel flow with grid turbulence exiting a heated jet into a confined grid turbulent crossflow, with both kinematic and passive scalar high quality measurements in order to characterize its statistical properties (energy spectra, Reynolds stresses anisotropy and PdF). These experiments are analyzed for the first time with LES by applying the strategy developed for the first configuration. The turbulent inlet boundary conditions are well controlled in both experiment and calculation (grid turbulence). Structured and unstructured grids are used to predict the measured mean values and turbulent fluctuations (velocity and scalars) as well as the Reynolds stresses. The activities aimed also to test the capabilities of the TrioCFD code results through the inspection of their agreement with the experimental datas obtained for T-junctions mixing ducts for a preliminary analysis of TrioCFD performances and to get a balanced compliance of the code’s capabilities
