    The Best Value in the Subprime Market: State Predatory Lending Reforms

    To find a model for national legislation, many lawmakers need look no further than their own backyards. People who live in states with strong laws against predatory lending are more likely to get responsible mortgages at a lower cost.Our findings show that state laws enacted to prevent predatory mortgage lending work as intended to reduce abusive loan terms without impeding credit. Strong state laws have been good for consumers while supporting a thriving subprime lending market. They provide credit-strapped families with plenty of access to responsible home loans at typical -- or even lower -- costs. At least 24 states have passed specific anti-predatory lending laws to supplement federal protections aimed at ending abusive mortgage lending practices

    Proteins that contain the DUF2874 domain constitute a new Pfam family PF11396. Members of this family have predominantly been identified in microbes found in the human gut and oral cavity. The crystal structure of one member of this family, BVU2987 from Bacteroides vulgatus, has been determined, revealing a β-lactamase inhibitor protein-like structure with a tandem repeat of domains. Sequence analysis and structural comparisons reveal that BVU2987 and other DUF2874 proteins are related to β-lactamase inhibitor protein, PepSY and SmpA_OmlA proteins and hence are likely to function as inhibitory proteins

    Fire History from Life-History: Determining the Fire Regime that a Plant Community Is Adapted Using Life-Histories

    Wildfire is a fundamental disturbance process in many ecological communities, and is critical in maintaining the structure of some plant communities. In the past century, changes in global land use practices have led to changes in fire regimes that have radically altered the composition of many plant communities. As the severe biodiversity impacts of inappropriate fire management regimes are recognized, attempts are being made to manage fires within a more ‘natural’ regime. In this aim, the focus has typically been on determining the fire regime to which the community has adapted. Here we take a subtly different approach and focus on the probability of a patch being burnt. We hypothesize that competing sympatric taxa from different plant functional groups are able to coexist due to the stochasticity of the fire regime, which creates opportunities in both time and space that are exploited differentially by each group. We exploit this situation to find the fire probability at which three sympatric grasses, from different functional groups, are able to co-exist. We do this by parameterizing a spatio-temporal simulation model with the life-history strategies of the three species and then search for the fire frequency and scale at which they are able to coexist when in competition. The simulation gives a clear result that these species only coexist across a very narrow range of fire probabilities centred at 0.2. Conversely, fire scale was found only to be important at very large scales. Our work demonstrates the efficacy of using competing sympatric species with different regeneration niches to determine the probability of fire in any given patch. Estimating this probability allows us to construct an expected historical distribution of fire return intervals for the community; a critical resource for managing fire-driven biodiversity in the face of a growing carbon economy and ongoing climate change

    Chromatin States Accurately Classify Cell Differentiation Stages

    Gene expression is controlled by the concerted interactions between transcription factors and chromatin regulators. While recent studies have identified global chromatin state changes across cell-types, it remains unclear to what extent these changes are co-regulated during cell-differentiation. Here we present a comprehensive computational analysis by assembling a large dataset containing genome-wide occupancy information of 5 histone modifications in 27 human cell lines (including 24 normal and 3 cancer cell lines) obtained from the public domain, followed by independent analysis at three different representations. We classified the differentiation stage of a cell-type based on its genome-wide pattern of chromatin states, and found that our method was able to identify normal cell lines with nearly 100% accuracy. We then applied our model to classify the cancer cell lines and found that each can be unequivocally classified as differentiated cells. The differences can be in part explained by the differential activities of three regulatory modules associated with embryonic stem cells. We also found that the “hotspot” genes, whose chromatin states change dynamically in accordance to the differentiation stage, are not randomly distributed across the genome but tend to be embedded in multi-gene chromatin domains, and that specialized gene clusters tend to be embedded in stably occupied domains

    Investigating the DART Impact Event with the Lucy LOng Range Reconnaissance Imager

    NASA’s Lucy mission is the first to provide flyby reconnaissance of the Jovian trojan asteroids, which are thought to be primordial small bodies that formed at a variety of heliocentric distances during the early stages of the solar system’s formation and were subsequently captured into Jupiter’s L4 and L5 Lagrange stability zones. Since its successful launch on 2021-Oct-16, the Lucy spacecraft has been orbiting the sun within the inner solar system. On 2022-Oct-16, Lucy executes the first of three Earth Gravity Assists (EGAs) that put the spacecraft on the correct trajectory to achieve its encounters with the Jovian trojans. The DART kinetic impact on the secondary body of the Didymos-Dimorphos binarysystem occurs 20 days prior to EGA1, at a time when the Lucy spacecraft is well-placed to observe it. Lucy carries a sensitive panchromatic camera, the Lucy LOng Range Reconnaissance Imager (L’LORRI), which is capable of detecting the binary system with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and with temporal cadences as fast as once per second. The observing geometry from Lucy is similar to that from the Earth: the range to the Didymos system is 0.126 au from Lucy vs 0.0757 au from Earth, and the solar phase angle is 31.9 deg vs 53.2 deg. The L’LORRI investigation of the DART impact event is divided into eight separate observational phases, starting 12 hr before the impact and ending 24 hr afterwards. L’LORRI cannot resolve the binary, but instead records the total brightness, which is expected to increase after the DART impact due to reflected sunlight from the ejecta. The first two phases are designed to obtain baseline photometry of the Didymos system covering both the Didymos-Dimorphos mutual orbit period (11.92 hr) and the rotational period of Didymos (2.26 hr). Phase 3 covers the impact event itself at one second cadence, starting 3 minutes beforeimpact and ending 4 minutes afterwards. Lucy has a clear view of the predicted DART impact site, theoretically enablingL’LORRI to detect an optical flash in the unlikely event it is brighter than Didymos itself. L’LORRI observations during phases 4 through 8 are designed to monitor the temporal and spatial evolution of ejecta associated with the impact event, but ejecta don’t leave the central pixel during Lucy’s observing period unless their speed is greater than about 2 m/s

    Revisiting Gender Differences in Somatic Symptoms of Depression: Much Ado about Nothing?

    Women have a higher prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and report more severe depressive symptoms than men. Several studies have suggested that gender differences in depression may occur because women report higher levels of somatic symptoms than men. Those studies, however, have not controlled or matched for non-somatic symptoms. The objective of this study was to examine if women report relatively more somatic symptoms than men matched on cognitive/affective symptoms.Male and female patients receiving treatment for MDD in outpatient psychiatric clinics in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, USA were matched on Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) cognitive/affective symptom scores. Male and female BDI-II somatic symptom scores were compared using independent samples 2-tailed t-tests.Of 472 male and 1,026 female patients, there were 470 male patients (mean age = 40.1 years, SD = 15.1) and 470 female patients (mean age = 43.1 years, SD = 17.2) successfully matched on BDI-II cognitive/affective symptom scores. Somatic symptoms accounted for 35% of total BDI-II scores for male patients versus 38% for matched female patients. Female patients had somatic symptom scores on average 1.3 points higher than males (p<.001), equivalent to 4% of the total BDI-II scores of female patients. Only 5% of male patients and 7% of female patients scored 2 or higher on all BDI-II somatic symptom items.Gender differences in somatic scores were very small. Thus, differences in the experience and reporting of somatic symptoms would not likely explain gender differences in depression rates and symptom severity

    Existential Loneliness and end-of-life care: A Systematic Review

Since the experience of EL is extremely disruptive, the issue of EL is relevant for the practice of end-of-life care. Still, the literature on EL has generated little discussion and empirical substantiation and has never been systematically reviewed. In order to systematically review the literature, we (1) identified the existential loneliness literature; (2) established an organising framework for the review; (3) conducted a conceptual analysis of existential loneliness; and (4) discussed its relevance for end-of-life care. We found that the EL concept is profoundly unclear. Distinguishing between three dimensions of EL-as a condition, as an experience, and as a process of inner growth-leads to some conceptual clarification. Analysis of these dimensions on the basis of their respective key notions-everpresent, feeling, defence; death, awareness, difficult communication; and inner growth, giving meaning, authenticity-further clarifies the concept. Although none of the key notions are unambiguous, they may function as a starting point for the development of care strategies on EL at the end of life.1 april 201
