    Complex Choices: Producers Risk Management Strategies

    Producers have a wide variety of risk management instruments available. How do producers make a choice of risk management instruments? Using the recently developed choice bracketing framework, we examine what risk management strategies producers use and identify the factors that drive their risk management decisions. Our results identify that producers use a wide variety of combinations of risk management instruments and that they bracket their choices into sets of alternative risk management instruments. Using multinomial logit models to estimate the choice process provides information about the factors that influence producers' decision making. The results show that broad bracketing producers use different risk management instruments than narrow bracketers. Policy makers and financial institutions can improve the performance of their programs and products when they are able to identify the bracketing level of segments of producers.Risk and Uncertainty,

    CFD-based Analysis & Correlation Development for a Novel Multi-furcating Heat Exchanger for High Temperature, High Pressure Applications

    The thermal efficiency of indirectly heated power cycles such as supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) closed Brayton cycles are typically limited by their heat exchangers (HXs), which require high heat transfer effectiveness while operating for tens of thousands of hours under high temperature (\u3e800°C) and pressure (\u3e80 bar) conditions. Previous literature has shown that the use of nature-inspired furcating flow channels represents an exciting opportunity to improve HX thermal-hydraulic performance. In this paper, we analyze the novel multi-furcating HX manifold concept, that was previously shown experimentally to reduce HX volume and mass compared to a baseline oil cooler by 50% and 67%, respectively. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are utilized to analyze thermal-hydraulic performance and fluid flow development. CFD-based correlations of Nusselt number and friction factor are developed for performance prediction of a full, additively manufactured HX. The developed Nusselt number and friction factor correlations predict unit cell thermal-hydraulic performance within ±3% and ±5% for all simulated Reynolds numbers, respectively. The full HX would enable increased thermal efficiency of indirectly heated power cycles to reduce both energy consumption and emissions while also allowing opportunities in advanced aerospace applications

    Disrupted upregulation of salience network connectivity during acute stress in siblings of schizophrenia patients

    BACKGROUND: An adaptive neural stress response is essential to adequately cope with a changing environment. It was previously argued that sympathetic/noradrenergic activity during acute stress increases salience network (SN) connectivity and reduces executive control network (ECN) connectivity in healthy controls, with opposing effects in the late aftermath of stress. Altered temporal dynamics of these networks in response to stress are thought to play a role in the development of psychopathology in vulnerable individuals. METHODS: We exposed male healthy controls (n = 40, mean age = 33.9) and unaffected siblings of schizophrenia patients (n = 39, mean age = 33.2) to the stress or control condition of the trier social stress test and subsequently investigated resting state functional connectivity of the SN and ECN directly after and 1.5 h after stress. RESULTS: Acute stress resulted in increased functional connectivity within the SN in healthy controls, but not in siblings (group × stress interaction pfwe < 0.05). In the late aftermath of stress, stress reduced functional connectivity within the SN in both groups. Moreover, we found increased functional connectivity between the ECN and the cerebellum in the aftermath of stress in both healthy controls and siblings of schizophrenia patients. CONCLUSIONS: The results show profound differences between siblings of schizophrenia patients and controls during acute stress. Siblings lacked the upregulation of neural resources necessary to quickly and adequately cope with a stressor. This points to a reduced dynamic range in the sympathetic response, and may constitute a vulnerability factor for the development of psychopathology in this at-risk group

    Automated and robust beam data validation of a preconfigured ring gantry linear accelerator using a 1D tank with synchronized beam delivery and couch motions

    PURPOSE: To develop an efficient and automated methodology for beam data validation for a preconfigured ring gantry linear accelerator using scripting and a one-dimensional (1D) tank with automated couch motions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using an application programming interface, a program was developed to allow the user to choose a set of beam data to validate with measurement. Once selected the program generates a set of instructions for radiation delivery with synchronized couch motions for the linear accelerator in the form of an extensible markup language (XML) file to be delivered on the ring gantry linear accelerator. The user then delivers these beams while measuring with the 1D tank and data logging electrometer. The program also automatically calculates this set of beams on the measurement geometry within the treatment planning system (TPS) and extracts the corresponding calculated dosimetric data for comparison to measurement. Once completed the program then returns a comparison of the measurement to the predicted result from the TPS to the user and prints a report. In this work lateral, longitudinal, and diagonal profiles were taken for fields sizes of 6 × 6, 8 × 8, 10 × 10, 20 × 20, and 28 × 28 cm RESULTS: Using this methodology, the TPS was validated to agree with measurement. All compared points yielded a gamma value less than 1 for a 1.5%/1.5 mm criteria (100% passing rate). Off axis profiles had \u3e98.5% of data points producing a gamma value \u3c1 with a 1%/1 mm criteria. All depth profiles produced 100% of data points with a gamma value \u3c1 with a 1%/1 mm criteria. All data points measured were within 1.5% or 2 mm distance to agreement. CONCLUSIONS: This methodology allows for an increase in automation in the beam data validation process. Leveraging the application program interface allows the user to use a single system to create the measurement files, predict the result, and then compare to actual measurement increasing efficiency and reducing the chance for user input errors

    Deep sequencing-based expression analysis shows major advances in robustness, resolution and inter-lab portability over five microarray platforms

    The hippocampal expression profiles of wild-type mice and mice transgenic for δC-doublecortin-like kinase were compared with Solexa/Illumina deep sequencing technology and five different microarray platforms. With Illumina's digital gene expression assay, we obtained ∼2.4 million sequence tags per sample, their abundance spanning four orders of magnitude. Results were highly reproducible, even across laboratories. With a dedicated Bayesian model, we found differential expression of 3179 transcripts with an estimated false-discovery rate of 8.5%. This is a much higher figure than found for microarrays. The overlap in differentially expressed transcripts found with deep sequencing and microarrays was most significant for Affymetrix. The changes in expression observed by deep sequencing were larger than observed by microarrays or quantitative PCR. Relevant processes such as calmodulin-dependent protein kinase activity and vesicle transport along microtubules were found affected by deep sequencing but not by microarrays. While undetectable by microarrays, antisense transcription was found for 51% of all genes and alternative polyadenylation for 47%. We conclude that deep sequencing provides a major advance in robustness, comparability and richness of expression profiling data and is expected to boost collaborative, comparative and integrative genomics studies
