    The Schoenus Spikelet: a Rhipidium? A Floral Ontogenetic Answer

    The inflorescence unit of Schoenus nigricans and S. ferrugineus consists of a zigzag axis and distichously arranged bracts, each of which may or may not subtend a bisexual flower. Each flower seems to terminate a lateral axis. These features have led to a controversy about the nature of the inflorescence unit, particularly whether it is monopodial or sympodial. It was often seen as a pseudospikelet composed of a succession of lateral axes, each subtended by the prophyll of the previous axis, as in a rhipidium. Many authors, however, consider the inflorescence units of all Cyperaceae to be indeterminate, racemose, actual spikelets. In our study, we present new SEM observations on the floral ontogeny of S. nigricans, corroborating a monopodial interpretation of the spikelet. Concaulescent growth of the flower primordium and the spikelet apex explains: (1) the presence of a peduncle under the flower, (2) the advanced development of the subtending glume compared to its own flower primordium, and (3) the position of the distal glume with regard to the distal flower primordium

    PDE-based Group Equivariant Convolutional Neural Networks

    We present a PDE-based framework that generalizes Group equivariant Convolutional Neural Networks (G-CNNs). In this framework, a network layer is seen as a set of PDE-solvers where geometrically meaningful PDE-coefficients become the layer's trainable weights. Formulating our PDEs on homogeneous spaces allows these networks to be designed with built-in symmetries such as rotation in addition to the standard translation equivariance of CNNs. Having all the desired symmetries included in the design obviates the need to include them by means of costly techniques such as data augmentation. We will discuss our PDE-based G-CNNs (PDE-G-CNNs) in a general homogeneous space setting while also going into the specifics of our primary case of interest: roto-translation equivariance. We solve the PDE of interest by a combination of linear group convolutions and non-linear morphological group convolutions with analytic kernel approximations that we underpin with formal theorems. Our kernel approximations allow for fast GPU-implementation of the PDE-solvers, we release our implementation with this article in the form of the LieTorch extension to PyTorch, available at https://gitlab.com/bsmetsjr/lietorch . Just like for linear convolution a morphological convolution is specified by a kernel that we train in our PDE-G-CNNs. In PDE-G-CNNs we do not use non-linearities such as max/min-pooling and ReLUs as they are already subsumed by morphological convolutions.     Theligonum cynocrambe: Developmental morphology of a peculiar rubiaceous herb

    The annual Mediterranean herbTheligonum cynocrambe shows a peculiar combination of morphological characters, e.g., switch from decussate to spiral phyllotaxis with 90-100° divergence, combined with a change from interpetiolar to lateral stipules, anemophily, lack of calyx, flowers often dimerous to trimerous, corolla fused in both male and female flowers, male flowers extra-axillary, with 2-19 stamens per flower, female flowers axillary, with inferior uniovulate ovary, basilateral style and perianth, nut-like fruits with elaiosome. In male flowers the androecium emerges as an (uneven) elliptical rim with a central depression. This common girdling primordium is divided up into several stamen primordia. In male flowers with low stamen number the stamen primordia may occupy the corners alternating with the corolla lobes. There are no epipetalous androecial primordia that secondarily divide into stamens. Male flowers occasionally show a hemispherical base that may be interpreted as remnant of the inferior ovary. In female flowers a ring primordium grows into a tube on which the petal lobes arise. The perianth and style become displaced adaxially by uneven growth of the inferior ovary. The ovary is basically bilocular. The lower region of the ovary is provided with a septum that is overtopped and hidden by the single curved ovule.Theligonum is referred to theRubiaceae-Rubioideae, with theAnthospermeae andPaederieae as most closely related tribe

    Diversification of myco-heterotrophic angiosperms: evidence from Burmanniaceae.

    Background - Myco-heterotrophy evolved independently several times during angiosperm evolution. Although many species of myco-heterotrophic plants are highly endemic and long-distance dispersal seems unlikely, some genera are widely dispersed and have pantropical distributions, often with large disjunctions. Traditionally this has been interpreted as evidence for an old age of these taxa. However, due to their scarcity and highly reduced plastid genomes our understanding about the evolutionary histories of the angiosperm myco-heterotrophic groups is poor. Results - We provide a hypothesis for the diversification of the myco-heterotrophic family Burmanniaceae. Phylogenetic inference, combined with biogeographical analyses, molecular divergence time estimates, and diversification analyses suggest that Burmanniaceae originated in West Gondwana and started to diversify during the Late Cretaceous. Diversification and migration of the species-rich pantropical genera Burmannia and Gymnosiphon display congruent patterns. Diversification began during the Eocene, when global temperatures peaked and tropical forests occurred at low latitudes. Simultaneous migration from the New to the Old World in Burmannia and Gymnosiphon occurred via boreotropical migration routes. Subsequent Oligocene cooling and breakup of boreotropical flora ended New-Old World migration and caused a gradual decrease in diversification rate in Burmanniaceae. Conclusion - Our results indicate that extant diversity and pantropical distribution of myco-heterotrophic Burmanniaceae is the result of diversification and boreotropical migration during the Eocene when tropical rain forest expanded dramaticall

    Different ways to obtain similar results: the development of the corolla and epipetaly in Rubieae (Rubioideae, Rubiaceae)

    Background and aims – Rubieae is a tribe in the subfamily Rubioideae characterised by herbaceous plants with verticillate leaves and flowers with a rudimentary or absent calyx and a short, cup-shaped corolla. This is in contrast to the flowers of most other Rubiaceae, in which the tubular corolla is longer than the corolla lobes. Also, the description by Payer, a French 19th century pioneer of floral ontogenetic research, of the floral development in Asperula, Galium, and Rubia deviates from recent insights about the development of tubular corollas, which are based on investigations of flowers of tropical Rubiaceae. Tubular corollas are currently considered as resulting from the development of underlying annular intercalary meristems, whereas Payer explained the tubular corollas in the three taxa by postgenital fusion. We therefore tested both hypotheses in six Rubieae genera, including the three taxa studied by Payer.Methods – Floral ontogeny of ten species in six Rubieae genera based on scanning electron (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). Conclusions – Our results suggest that, in all species studied, the mature phenotype of the corolla as well as the epipetaly of the stamens is caused by a combination of three developmental processes (the development of a stamen-corolla tube, the development of a corolla tube sensu stricto, and postgenital fusion), and the relative moment of activation of each of these processes during floral development (plastochron variation or heterochrony)
