    Assessment of antioxidant responses and trace metal accumulation by digestive gland of ribbed mussel Aulacomya atra atra from Northern Patagonia

    Seasonal and spatial variability of trace metal concentrations and of a battery of antioxidant parameters were evaluated in digestive gland of the ribbed mussel Aulacomya atra atra. Fe, Al and Cu accumulated in tissue exhibited maximum values in winter, coinciding partially with the highest labile concentrations of Fe and Cu in sediment. Metals, as other pollutants, are known to influence the oxidative status of organisms and antioxidant enzymes have been often proposed as biomarkers of contaminant effects.Seasonal variations of trace metals did not appear to influence those of biochemical parameters, which generally showed an opposite trend with higher enzymatic activities in summer when trace metal concentrations were lower. Organisms from Punta Cuevas (control site) showed higher induction of reactive oxygen species production than those from both considered impacted sites, suggesting the possibility of some biochemical adaptation in organisms or a higher modulation of environmental and physiological factors on antioxidant responses than levels of trace metals. This study, which is the first in the area in this matter, showed that seasonal variations of potential biomarkers should be incorporated into interpretation of long-term biomonitoring studies in this marine coastal ecosystem.Fil: Giarratano, Erica. To better understand and study the public bench is necessary to consider the evolution of the seat as part of the life of humans, to found the comfort and commodity. The seat is perhaps one of the most emblematic creations of man. So and through the history of seating furniture, we can relate this with the development of society. It was from nineteenth century with the process of industrialization and the changes in society that appeared the wide implementation of public bench, a kind of equipment that up to the date wasn´t very common. This shared equipment allowed a new abidance on the public space and a new experience in the city. Initially sought inspiration in domestic furniture and maintained the same designation attributed to any collective seat, but the bench lost prestige as interior furniture.     Partición geoquímica de metales en sedimentos por el Método BCR en la marisma de la Bahía de San Antonio, Argentina

    La importancia de conocer el potencial de removilización de los metales asociados apartículas sedimentarias radica en su efecto sobre la biodisponibilidad y toxicidad. En este trabajo se presentan las concentraciones de metales traza (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe) en sedimentos de marismas de la Bahía de San Antonio, diferenciando parches con vegetación y sin vegetación. Se utilizó el método de extracción secuencial BCR (1) obteniendo cuatro fracciones: intercambiable (F1), reducible (F2), oxidable (F3) y residual (F4). En 2013, se muestrearon estacionalmente por triplicado 5 sitios de la bahía en donde se midió in situ pH y potencial redox: A, B y C en la zona media-alta de la marisma con condiciones oxidadas (139-186 mV) y ligeramente alcalinas (pH 7,9- 8,2); C* y D en la marisma baja (-144-23 mV y 7,1-7,3 respectivamente). Mediante análisis de componentes principales (ACP) para cada fracción, se evaluó la distribución de casos (sitio y parche). El orden de abundancia relativa de cada metal en cada fracción fue: Cd F4 (34-54%) >F3 (ND-32%) >F1 (solo detectado enD) y F2 (solo detectado en A); Pb F2 (73-100%) >F4 (ND-17%) >F3 (6-13%) >F1 (solodetectado en A); Cu F4 (58-74%) >F2 (16-38%) >F3 (ND-11%) >F1 (ND); Zn F4 y F2 (17-66%) > F3 y F1 (3-11%) y Fe F4 (55-82%) >F2 (12-27%) >F3 (1-31%) >F1 (<1%). Engeneral, a través del ACP se observó separación de sitios en función de las condiciones ambientales, del nivel de la marisma y/o de la proximidad de fuentes antrópicas, lo cual dificulta establecer una clara relación entre las concentraciones medidas y su potencial impacto. Solo para los sitios A (F1, F2, F3) y C* (F2), se observó separación de los parches, con los valores más elevados en aquellos con vegetación. El Pb es el metal con mayor riesgo de movilización en todos los sitios, dado que fue encontrado principalmente en la fracción F2.Fil: Marinho, Carmen Haydee.     First report of white thread blight caused by ceratobasidium niltonsouzanum on yerba mate in Argentina

    Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil.) is a native species of the subtropical and temperate regions of South America. In the Misiones province, in Northeastern Argentina, yerba mate is an important agricultural crop grown on approximately 150,000 ha. In March 2019, diseased leaves and stems from four fields near Comandante Andresito city, were received for diagnosis at the Instituto de Patología Vegetal (IPAVE) and Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA), Argentina. Disease symptoms were accompanied by white mycelium threads in the young branches. The threads extended longitudinally, along the surface of the stem, which later developed into leaf blight, with leaves hanging on white threads of fungal hyphae. Symptoms were the same in samples from all four fields (100% prevalence) and disease incidence varied between 50 and 80%. Isolations were performed by transferring small sections of diseased plant tissue, disinfested in 1.5% sodium hypochlorite for 1 min, washed with sterile distilled water, then transferred to Petri dishes containing potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated at 25°C, in the dark. Over ten isolations from five plants, eight Rhizoctonia-like colonies were isolated. Pure cultures were obtained by transferring hyphal tips to plates containing PDA. Four isolates (IPAVE 0075, 0076, 0077 and 0078) were selected as representatives for characterization and deposited at the Culture Collection of Instituto de Patologia Vegetal ? IPAVE (Córdoba, Argentina). On PDA, the colonies initially had white aerial mycelia and concentric rings were visible on the reverse side. The colonies turned brown after approximately 30 days. Hyphae were branched with 90° angulation, a typical character of members of the form genus Rhizoctonia. For molecular identification, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was amplified by PCR (White et al. 1990), and sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses using Bayesian inference grouped the isolates from yerba mate with the type species of Ceratobasidium niltonsouzanum (Melo et al. 2018) with high posterior probability (0.98). Pathogenicity testing was conducted using toothpicks colonized with the pathogen (Souza et al. 2009). Inoculum was produced on PDA medium by allowing the isolates to colonize sterilized toothpicks placed on PDA, and incubating for 7 days at 25°C, under a 12h photoperiod. Twenty four-month old yerba mate plants were inoculated by inserting the colonized toothpicks into the base of the leaf petiole. Plants were kept in the greenhouse at 25°C, under high humidity, for 30 days and observed daily (Souza et al. 2009). Four control plants were mock-inoculated using only sterilized toothpicks. White thread blight symptoms were observed on all inoculated plants after 20 days, whereas control plants remained symptomless. C. niltonsouzanum was re-isolated from symptomatic tissue (leaves and petiole) of the inoculated plants, with a frequency of 100%, thereby validating Koch?s postulates. The experiment was performed twice. C. niltonsouzanum has been reported as a pathogen on numerous crops including Coffea arabica, Camellia sinensis, Azadirachta indica and Eugenia uniflora in Brazil (Melo et al 2018). This work improves knowledge surrounding the etiology of the disease associated with yerba mate in Argentina, which is essential information for the identification of appropriate management practices. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. niltonsouzanum causing white thread blight of yerba mate in Argentina and worldwide.Fil: Bernardi Lima, Nelson.     Healthcare professionals’ perceptions of Islamic beliefs and traditions as barriers to organ donation and transplantation in Algeria

    Objetivo: Explorar la percepción que tienen los profesionales de la salud sobre la influencia de las creencias y tradiciones derivadas del Islam en la donación y el trasplante de órganos en Argelia. Método: Estudio cualitativo exploratorio mediante entrevistas personales semiestructuradas a 17 profesionales de la salud (nueve hombres y ocho mujeres) de diferentes especialidades en un hospital universitario en Argel (Argelia). Se realizó un análisis de contenido cualitativo de las transcripciones con la ayuda del software informático ATLAS.ti 5. Resultados: Las y los profesionales de salud consideran que las creencias religiosas no afectan a la donación en vida, pero opinan que tienen un impacto negativo en la donación de órganos cadavérica debido a la existencia de mitos derivados de la religión islámica y al desconocimiento de la población argelina sobre el posicionamiento de los líderes religiosos en relación al trasplante y a la donación de órganos. Conclusión: Existe confusión entre la población argelina sobre la postura del Islam en torno a la donación y el trasplante de órganos, que perjudica fundamentalmente a la tasa de donación cadavérica. La colaboración entre el sector sanitario y las figuras religiosas para sensibilizar a la población podría contribuir a mejorar la disposición de la población a donar sus órganos no solo en vida.Objective: The aim of this study is to explore healthcare professionals’ perception of the influence of Islamic beliefs and traditions concerning organ donation and transplants in Algeria. Methods: Exploratory qualitative study using individual semi-structured interviews of 17 healthcare professionals (9 men, 8 women) of different specialties in a University hospital in Algiers (Algeria). Qualitative content analysis of transcripts was performed using the computer software ATLAS.ti 5. Results: Healthcare professionals believe that religious beliefs do not affect living donation but say they have a negative impact on donation of cadaveric organs due to the existence of myths derived from the Islamic religion and lack of knowledge of the Algerian population about the positioning of religious leaders in relation to organ donation and transplantation. Conclusion: There is confusion among the Algerian population on the position of Islam around organ donation and transplantation, mainly to the detriment of the rate of cadaveric donation.     The effect of crop sequences on soil microbial, chemical and physical indicators and its relationship with soybean sudden death syndrome (complex of Fusarium species)

    The effect of crop sequences on soil quality indicators and its relationship with sudden death syndrome (SDS, a complex of Fusarium species) was evaluated by physical, chemical, biochemical and molecular techniques. Regarding physical aspects, soybean/maize and maize monoculture exhibited the highest stable aggregate level, with values 41% and 43% higher than in soybean monoculture, respectively, and 133% higher than in bean monoculture. Bulk density (BD) was higher in soybean monoculture, being 4% higher than in bean monoculture. The chemical parameters organic matter, total N, P, K, Mg, Ca, and water holding capacity also indicated that soybean/maize and maize monoculture improved soil quality. Fungal and bacterial community fingerprints generated using Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism analysis of intergenic transcribed spacer regions of rRNA genes and 16S rRNA genes, respectively, indicated a clear separation between the rotations. Fatty acid profiles evaluated by FAME showed that bean monoculture had higher biomass of Gram (+) bacteria and stress indicators than maize monoculture, while the soybean/maize system showed a significant increase in total microbial biomass (total FAMEs content) in comparison with soybean and bean monoculture. The incidence of SDS (Fusarium crassistipitatum) was markedly higher (15%) under soybean monoculture than when soybean was grown in rotation with maize. In the present work, soil microbial properties were improved under soybean/maize relative to continuous soybean. The improvement of soil health was one of the main causes for the reduction of disease pressure and crop yield improvement due to the benefits that crop rotation produces for soil quality.EEA SaltaFil: Perez Brandan, Carolina.
