    A BIM-based approach supporting fire engineering

    From performance based approach to BIM-based approach. The exploitation of Building Information Modelling within Fire Engineering can be considered a further technical and technological development. The objective is to implement the BIM model with the most significant Fire Prevention information in order to use them during the building lifecycle by operators and rescuers, in particular for maintenance and emergency management. According to the phase of the project, it is possible to extend the data richness about structures, introducing materials and physical properties to the components, supporting for example the fire resistance checks. Furthermore, data exchange towards specialized software, as CFD analysis, is enabled through to the interoperability process optimizing time and accuracy of simulations

    Listeria abdominal endograft infection miming pseudoaneurysm treated with in-situ aortic reconstruction: a case report

    We report the case of a 72-year old man previously treated with an aortic endograft for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. After 3 years the patient developed a sepsis. Imaging and blood exams detected an endograft infection related to Listeria monocytogenes. Patients underwent endograft removal and in-situ aortic reconstruction with a cryopreserved allograft. A continuous antibacterial therapy has been established. One-month follow-up revealed the absence of clinically relevant infection with patency of the graft and absence of biochemical inflammatory markers

    Mixed mucus-secreting and oncocytic carcinoma of the thyroid - Pathologic, histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural study of a case

    We report a carcinoma that is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of a mixed mucus-secreting and oncocytic carcinoma of the thyroid. We also describe the histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of this tumor. A 59-year-old man complaining of severe bone pain and weight loss underwent clinical and radiologic investigations. The studies revealed a nodule in the left thyroid lobe that was "cold" by (131)I scintiscan and multiple lytic lesions of the skeleton that showed increased uptake by (99m)Tc-Sestamibi scintiscan. Left hemithyroidectomy was performed and the surgical specimen contained a well-circumscribed nodule of 3 cm in the greatest diameter. Light microscopy showed an oncocytic carcinoma with an area of glandular and papillary proliferation of mucin-producing cells. A double histochemical approach (Alcian blue-periodic acid-Schiff and Alcian blue-high-iron diamine) combined with ultrastructural investigation confirmed the presence of true mucus, ruling out the presence of breakdown products of thyroglobulin. Harmonic and quasi-harmonic lattice dynamical calculations are performed with the Crystal program, by explicitly accounting for thermal expansion effects and by exploring the effect of several DFT functionals. The anisotropic, directional elastic response of the system is characterized up to 20 GPa of pressure. The thermal lattice expansion and elastic bulk modulus are described at simultaneous temperatures up to 2000 K and pressures up to 20 GPa.     Coring the sedimentary expression of the early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event: New stratigraphic records from the Tethys Ocean

    The Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) interval was cored at Colle di Sogno and Gajum in the Lombardy Basin (Southern Alps, northern Italy). The Sogno and Gajum cores recovered 26.83 and 31.18 stratigraphic metres, respectively, of pelagic sediments consisting of marly limestones, marlstone, marly claystone, and black shale. Drilling at both sites resulted in 100\u2009% recovery of unweathered material. The pelagic succession comprises a relatively expanded black shale interval of 4.98\u2009m in the Sogno core and 15.35\u2009m in the Gajum core, with lower and upper boundaries without evidence of hiatuses. The Sogno and Gajum cores can be considered reference sections for the pelagic lower Toarcian interval of the western Tethys and will provide high-resolution micropaleontological, inorganic and organic geochemical, isotopic multiproxy data. Integrated stratigraphy and cyclostratigraphy are predicted to result in estimates of durations and rates to model the ecosystem resilience to the extreme perturbations of the T-OAE and gain a better understanding of current global changes and help provide better projections of future scenarios
