When are impending retirees inspired to save: The role of agreeableness and future clarity

    Get PDF
In the decade or so before they retire, many individuals do not save enough money to maintain their lifestyle after retirement. According to the self-continuity hypothesis, as individuals approach a transition in their life, such as retirement, they are not as willing to sacrifice pleasure now to benefit their future, impeding their tendency to save money judiciously and to manage their finances prudently. This longitudinal study, however, tested the hypothesis that impending retirees who are agreeable or perceive their future as vivid and certain, called future clarity, are more likely to manage their finances prudently, despite this looming transition. In particular, people who are agreeable tend to perceive their identity as more stable because the extent to which they value harmonious relationships does not abruptly escalate as retirement approaches. People who report future clarity tend to perceive the future as closer in time and, therefore, are more willing to sacrifice their pleasure to benefit this future. To assess these hypotheses, 597 impending retirees completed the same questionnaire twice, in consecutive years, to gauge their tendency to manage their finances prudently, called financial control, as well as their agreeableness and future clarity. As hypothesized, financial control tended to subside over time, but agreeableness and future clarity diminished this decline. As these findings imply, if impending retirees are exposed to opportunities they could pursue after they retire—clarifying their future goals and pursuits—they are likely to manage their finances more judiciously now

This research aimed at analyzing the authenticity of teacher's made assessment and its contribution to students' English achievement. 35 Junior High School English teachers in Buleleng Regency were used as the subjects in this research. Data collection methods employed were document study, questionnaire, and interview to answer the research questions quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings demonstrated that teachers' made assessments have sufficient authenticity level of planning, have high authenticity level of assessment implementation as perceived by teachers, have sufficient authenticity level of assessment implementation as perceived by students, and is considered as having high level on the students' English achievement after being assessed with teachers' made assessment. The findingsalso showed that only assessment implementation as perceived by studentsand simultaneous predictors gave significant contribution to students' English achievement. Assessment planning and assessment implementation as perceived by teachers did not show significant contribution because there was found inconsistent finding between what teachers planned with what teachers have implemented. This study has positive contribution to the importance of considering the authenticity of assessment in teaching English as a foreign language

Palladium nanoparticles from desulfovibrio alaskensis G20 catalyze biocompatible sonogashira and biohydrogenation cascades

[Image: see text] Transition-metal nanoparticles produced by living bacteria are emerging as novel catalysts for sustainable synthesis. However, the scope of their catalytic activity and their ability to be integrated within metabolic pathways for the bioproduction of non-natural small molecules has been underexplored. Herein we report that Pd nanoparticles synthesized by the sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio alaskensis G20 (DaPdNPs) catalyze the Sonogashira coupling of phenyl acetylenes and aryl iodides, and the subsequent one-pot hydrogenation to bibenzyl derivatives using hydrogen gas generated from d-glucose by engineered Escherichia coli DD-2. The formal hydroarylation reaction is biocompatible, occurs in aqueous media at ambient temperature, and affords products in 70–99% overall yield. This is the first reported microbial nanoparticle to catalyze the Sonogashira reaction and the first demonstration that these biogenic catalysts can be interfaced with the products of engineered metabolism for small molecule synthesis

The aim of this research was to describe about teaching learning process using Cooperative Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) to increase student’s active and study result to the VII B grade student’s at SMP Negeri 1 Cilacap. The hypothesis of this research was applying TAI could increase student’s active and student’s study result. This research was Classroom Action Research. The research result showed that after applying TAI in teaching learning process, the student’s active increasing. Before this research the students were passive to listen to the teacher’s explanation but after this research the students were more active to ask and discuss in group. Means student’s score increased, first 65,17 score, increasing in first cycle was 69,33 and increasing second cycle was 78,13. From the result above, it showed that TAI could increase student’s active and study result

Belimumab or anifrolumab for systemic lupus erythematosus? A risk-benefit assessment

    Get PDF
Treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) currently employs agents with relatively unselective immunosuppressive properties. However, two target-specific biological drugs have been approved: belimumab (anti-B-cell-activating factor/BAFF) and anifrolumab (anti-interferon alpha receptor-1/IFNAR1). Here, we performed a comparative risk-benefit assessment for both drugs based on the role of BAFF and IFNAR1 in host defense and the pathogenesis of SLE and by considering the available data on safety and efficacy. Due to differences in target expression sites, anti-IFNAR1, but not anti-BAFF, might elicit organ-specific effects, consistent with clinical efficacy data. The IFNAR1 is specifically involved in innate and adaptive antiviral immunity in most cells of the body. Consistent with this observation, the available safety data obtained from patients negatively selected for LN and neuropsychiatric SLE, primary immunodeficiencies, splenectomy and chronic HIV, HBV, HCV infections suggest an increased risk for some viral infections such as varicella zoster and perhaps influenza. In contrast, BAFF is mainly involved in adaptive immune responses in lymphoid tissues, thus anti-BAFF therapy modulates SLE activity and prevents SLE flares without interfering with local innate host defense mechanisms and should only marginally affect immune memory to previous pathogen exposures consistent with the available safety data from SLE patients without chronic HIV, HBV or HCV infections. When using belimumab and anifrolumab, careful patient stratification and specific precautions may minimize risks and maximize beneficial treatment effects for patients with SLE

Epigenetic remodeling in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction

PURPOSE OF REVIEW In this review, we critically address the role of epigenetic processing and its therapeutic modulation in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). RECENT FINDINGS HFpEF associates with a poor prognosis and the identification of novel molecular targets and therapeutic approaches are in high demand. Emerging evidence indicates a key involvement of epigenetic signals in the regulation of transcriptional programs underpinning features of HFpEF. The growing understanding of chromatin dynamics has led to the development of selective epigenetic drugs able to reset transcriptional changes thus delaying or preventing the progression toward HFpEF. Epigenetic information in the setting of HFpEF can be employed to: (i) dissect novel epigenetic networks and chromatin marks contributing to HFpEF; (ii) unveil circulating and cell-specific epigenetic biomarkers; (iii) build predictive models by using computational epigenetics and deep machine learning; (iv) develop new chromatin modifying drugs for personalized management of HFpEF. SUMMARY Acquired epigenetic signatures during the lifetime can contribute to derail molecular pathways involved in HFpEF. A scrutiny investigation of the individual epigenetic landscape will offer opportunities to develop personalized epigenetic biomarkers and therapies to fight HFpEF in the decades to come
