Photovoltaic effect in ferroelectric ceramics
The ceramic structure was simulated in a form that is more tractable to correlation between experiment and theory. Single crystals (of barium titanate) were fabricated in a simple corrugated structure in which the pedestals of the corrugation simulated the grain while the intervening cuts could be filled with materials simulating the grain boundaries. The observed photovoltages were extremely small (100 mv)
Instability and spatiotemporal rheochaos in a shear-thickening fluid model
We model a shear-thickening fluid that combines a tendency to form
inhomogeneous, shear-banded flows with a slow relaxational dynamics for fluid
microstructure. The interplay between these factors gives rich dynamics, with
periodic regimes (oscillating bands, travelling bands, and more complex
oscillations) and spatiotemporal rheochaos. These phenomena, arising from
constitutive nonlinearity not inertia, can occur even when the steady-state
flow curve is monotonic. Our model also shows rheochaos in a low-dimensional
truncation where sharply defined shear bands cannot form
Ferrite post in a rectangular wave guide
A thin circular ferrite post magnetized lengthwise is placed in a rectangular wave guide with its axis normal to the direction of propagation of the incident waves. The polarization is such that the electric vector is parallel to the post. The reflected and transmitted waves are calculated both with respect to their intensities and phases. The results are also applied to find the influence of a thin ferrite post upon the resonant frequency of a rectangular cavity
Electrical spin injection from an organic-based ferrimagnet in a hybrid organic/inorganic heterostructure
We report the successful extraction of spin polarized current from the
organic-based room temperature ferrimagnetic semiconductor V[TCNE]x (x~2, TCNE:
tetracyanoethylene; TC ~ 400 K, EG ~ 0.5 eV, s ~ 10-2 S/cm) and its subsequent
injection into a GaAs/AlGaAs light-emitting diode (LED). The spin current
tracks the magnetization of V[TCNE]x~2, is weakly temperature dependent, and
exhibits heavy hole / light hole asymmetry. This result has implications for
room temperature spintronics and the use of inorganic materials to probe spin
physics in organic and molecular systems

Explicit Zeta Functions for Bosonic and Fermionic Fields on a Noncommutative Toroidal Spacetime
Explicit formulas for the zeta functions corresponding to
bosonic () and to fermionic () quantum fields living on a
noncommutative, partially toroidal spacetime are derived. Formulas for the most
general case of the zeta function associated to a quadratic+linear+constant
form (in {\bf Z}) are obtained. They provide the analytical continuation of the
zeta functions in question to the whole complex plane, in terms of series
of Bessel functions (of fast, exponential convergence), thus being extended
Chowla-Selberg formulas. As well known, this is the most convenient expression
that can be found for the analytical continuation of a zeta function, in
particular, the residua of the poles and their finite parts are explicitly
given there. An important novelty is the fact that simple poles show up at
, as well as in other places (simple or double, depending on the number of
compactified, noncompactified, and noncommutative dimensions of the spacetime),
where they had never appeared before. This poses a challenge to the
zeta-function regularization procedure.Comment: 15 pages, no figures, LaTeX fil
EXPERIMENTS AND MODELLING OF CALCIUM SULPHATE PRECIPITATION UNDER SENSIBLE HEATING CONDITIONS: INITIAL FOULING AND BULK PRECIPITATION RATE STUDIES
Crystallization of calcium sulphate, an inverse solubility salt, on a heated surface under sensible heating conditions has been studied. A temperature measurement technique was employed to detect initial fouling rates. Fouling experiments were carried out to determine how process variables such as surface temperature and velocity affect the initial fouling rates of calcium sulphate scaling. Experimental results show that, at a given surface temperature, there exists a maximum initial fouling rate for a range of fluid velocities. Also, this maximum rate and the fluid velocity at which it occurs both increase as the surface temperature increases. These observations are all qualitatively in agreement with the Initial Fouling Rate Model (IFRM) of Epstein (1994). The fouling experiments were supplemented by kinetic batch experiments to make a comparison between fouling activation energies and purely chemical activation energies
Photoinduced magnetism and random magnetic anisotropy in organic-based magnetic semiconductor V(TCNE)(x) films, for x similar to 2
The V(TCNE)(x), x similar to 2 is an organic-based amorphous ferrimagnet, whose magnetic behavior is significantly affected in the low field regime by the random magnetic anisotropy. It was determined that this material has thermally reversible persistent change in both magnetization and conductivity driven by the optical excitation. Here, we report results of a ferrimagnetic resonance study of the photoinduced magnetism in V(TCNE)(x) film. Upon optical excitation (lambda similar to 457.9 nm), the ferrimagnetic resonance spectra display substantial changes in their linewidths and line shifts, which reflect a substantial increase in the random magnetic anistropy. The results reflect the role of magnetic anisotropy in disordered magnets and suggest a novel mechanism of photoinduced magnetism in V(TCNE)(x) induced by the increased structural disorder in the system.open201
