    Stratigraphy of the Upper Miocene Deposits in Sarasota County, Florida

    The presence of undisputed Upper Miocene sediments in Sarasota County, Florida, has not been widely known. Most authors have stared that the Middle Miocene Hawthorn Formation is overlain by Pliocene to Recent deposits. The Upper Miocene is represented in southern Florida by the Tamiami Formation. The Upper Miocene age determination is based on the characteristic faunal assemblage, Ostrea disparalis, Chione ulocyma, and Ecphora quadricostata umbilicata. Fossil mollusks, echinoderms, and bryozoans collected from outcrops, quarries, and sinkholes in this area definitely confirm the presence of Upper Miocene sediments in Sarasota County. Typical Upper Miocene species include Anadara cf. A. idonea, Chi- one ulocyma, Ostrea cf. O. tamiamiensis, Ostrea tamiamiensis monroensis, and Encope macrophora tamiamiensis. Within the Upper Miocene deposits exists an impermeable bur porous bed characterized by a decrease in radioactivity and electrical resistivity. These characteristics are indicative of clay and the interpretation of x-ray diffraction patterns verified the predominance of clay minerals in the aquiclude. Montmorillonite was the dominant clay mineral with lesser amounts of attapulgite and alpha sepiolite. Based on evidence presented in this paper, the Upper Miocene deposits occurring in Sarasota County are considered to be a lithosome of the Tamiami Formation

    Topography and Nature Symbolism in Thomas Mann’s ‘Zauberberg’

    In my master's thesis I examine the meaning of topography and nature symbolism in Thomas Mann's novel "The Magic Mountain". I select text passages and chapters that exemplify the importance of mountains, height and snow for the whole story and inevitably lead to the question of whether the story would have worked in the lowlands. For example, the first chapter “Arrival” already resembles a journey to Hades if one looks at the topographical and natural symbolic references that Thomas Mann has skillfully interwoven. But nature, flora, and fauna, and above all the seasons, also play an important role in Mann's contemporary novel and underline the inner and outer movement of the protagonist Hans Castorp. In their fictionalized form of the novel, places such as the Berghof or Davos serve as a cipher that significantly reflects the tension of the whole plot and at some points leads to disorder or disorientation. Spatial movements can be found throughout the text, up and down, right, and left, but those also culminate in the chapter “Snow”, which is why I dedicate a focus of my work to that. On the one hand I examine the symbolic meaning of the snow, which can be seen both as a bringer of death and as a means of blurring the boundaries, on the other hand I deal with the spatial movement (internal and external) of Castorp - and to what extent he can be regarded as the only balancing figure in the novel. A symbiosis of opposites is created, for example, in snow and sea. The work demonstrates the importance of the mountains as the novel's spatial-theoretical setting and explains why flat land and sea are to be regarded as topographical and symbolic "opponents" and decisively advance the plot

    StemCellNet: an interactive platform for network-oriented investigations in stem cell biology.

    Stem cells are characterized by their potential for self-renewal and their capacity to differentiate into mature cells. These two key features emerge through the interplay of various factors within complex molecular networks. To provide researchers with a dedicated tool to investigate these networks, we have developed StemCellNet, a versatile web server for interactive network analysis and visualization. It rapidly generates focused networks based on a large collection of physical and regulatory interactions identified in human and murine stem cells. The StemCellNet web-interface has various easy-to-use tools for selection and prioritization of network components, as well as for integration of expression data provided by the user. As a unique feature, the networks generated can be screened against a compendium of stemness-associated genes. StemCellNet can also indicate novel candidate genes by evaluating their connectivity patterns. Finally, an optional dataset of generic interactions, which provides large coverage of the human and mouse proteome, extends the versatility of StemCellNet to other biomedical research areas in which stem cells play important roles, such as in degenerative diseases or cancer.     Curriculum policy reform in an era of technical accountability: 'fixing' curriculum, teachers and students in English schools

    Drawing on a Levinasian ethical perspective, the argument driving this paper is that the technical accountability movement currently dominating the educational system in England is less than adequate because it overlooks educators’ responsibility for ethical relations in responding to difference in respect of the other. Curriculum policy makes a significant contribution to the technical accountability culture through complicity in performativity, high-stakes testing and datafication, at the same time as constituting student and teacher subjectivities. I present two different conceptualizations of subjectivity and education, before engaging these in the analysis of data arising from an empirical study which investigated teachers’ and stakeholders’ experiences of curriculum policy reform in ‘disadvantaged’ English schools. The study’s findings demonstrate how a prescribed programme of technical curriculum regulation attempts to ‘fix’ or mend educational problems by ‘fixing’ or prescribing educational solutions. This not only denies ethical professional relations between students, teachers and parents, but also deflects responsibility for educational success from government to teachers and hastens the move from public to private educational provision. Complying with prescribed curriculum policy requirements shifts attention from broad philosophical and ethical questions about educational purpose as well as conferring a violence by assuming control over student and teacher subjectivities

    An approach for the identification of targets specific to bone metastasis using cancer genes interactome and gene ontology analysis

    Metastasis is one of the most enigmatic aspects of cancer pathogenesis and is a major cause of cancer-associated mortality. Secondary bone cancer (SBC) is a complex disease caused by metastasis of tumor cells from their primary site and is characterized by intricate interplay of molecular interactions. Identification of targets for multifactorial diseases such as SBC, the most frequent complication of breast and prostate cancers, is a challenge. Towards achieving our aim of identification of targets specific to SBC, we constructed a 'Cancer Genes Network', a representative protein interactome of cancer genes. Using graph theoretical methods, we obtained a set of key genes that are relevant for generic mechanisms of cancers and have a role in biological essentiality. We also compiled a curated dataset of 391 SBC genes from published literature which serves as a basis of ontological correlates of secondary bone cancer. Building on these results, we implement a strategy based on generic cancer genes, SBC genes and gene ontology enrichment method, to obtain a set of targets that are specific to bone metastasis. Through this study, we present an approach for probing one of the major complications in cancers, namely, metastasis. The results on genes that play generic roles in cancer phenotype, obtained by network analysis of 'Cancer Genes Network', have broader implications in understanding the role of molecular regulators in mechanisms of cancers.
