    Approaches to study in higher education portuguese students: a portuguese version of the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST)

    This paper examines the validity of the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students—short version (ASSIST; Tait et al. in Improving student learning: Improving students as learners, 1998), to be used with Portuguese undergraduate students. The ASSIST was administrated to 566 students, in order to analyse a Portuguese version of this inventory. Exploratory factor analysis (principal axis factor analysis followed by direct oblimin rotation) reproduced the three main factors that correspond to the original dimensions of the inventory (deep, surface apathetic and strategic approaches to learning). The results are consistent with the background theory on approaches to learning. Additionally, the reliability analysis revealed acceptable internal consistency indexes for the main scales and subscales. This inventory might represent a valuable research tool for the assessment of approaches to learning among Portuguese higher education students

    A protocol for co-creating research project lay summaries with stakeholders:Guideline development for Canada's AGE-WELL Network

    Background Funding bodies increasingly require researchers to write lay summaries to communicate projects’ real-world relevance to the public in an accessible way. However, research proposals and findings are generally not easily readable or understandable by non-specialist readers. Many researchers find writing lay summaries difficult because they typically write for fellow subject specialists or academics rather than the general public or a non-specialist audience. The primary objective of our project is to develop guidelines for researchers in Canada’s AGE-WELL Network of Centres of Excellence, and ultimately various other disciplines, sectors, and institutions, to co-create lay summaries of research projects with stakeholders. To begin, we produced a protocol for co-creating a lay summary based on workshops we organized and facilitated for an AGE-WELL researcher. This paper presents the lay summary co-creation protocol that AGE-WELL researchers will be invited to use. Methods Eligible participants in this project will be 24 AgeTech project researchers who are funded by the AGE-WELL network in its Core Research Program 2020. If they agree to participate in this project, we will invite them to use our protocol to co-produce a lay summary of their respective projects with stakeholders. The protocol comprises six steps: Investigate principles of writing a good lay summary, identify the target readership, identify stakeholders to collaborate with, recruit the identified stakeholders to work on a lay summary, prepare for workshop sessions, and execute the sessions. To help participants through the process, we will provide them with a guide to developing an accessible, readable research lay summary, help them make decisions, and host, and facilitate if needed, their lay summary co-creation workshops. Discussion Public-facing research outputs, including lay summaries, are increasingly important knowledge translation strategies to promote the impact of research on real-world issues. To produce lay summaries that include information that will interest a non-specialist readership and that are written in accessible language, stakeholder engagement is key. Furthermore, both researchers and stakeholders benefit by participating in the co-creation process. We hope the protocol helps researchers collaborate with stakeholders effectively to co-produce lay summaries that meet the needs of both the public and project funders

Several classes of compounds in clinical use or trials, such as the taxanes and epothilones, bind to the same region of β-tubulin. Determining how these molecules interact with tubulin and stabilize microtubules is important both for understanding the mechanism of action and enhancing chemotherapeutic potential, e.g. reducing side effects, increasing solubility, and overcoming resistance. Structural studies using nonpolymerized tubulin or stabilized polymers have produced different models of epothilone binding. Here, we used directed mutagenesis of the binding site on Saccharomyces cerevisiae β-tubulin to analyze interactions between Epothilone B and its biologically relevant substrate, dynamic microtubules. Five engineered amino acid changes contributed to a 125-fold increase in Epothilone B cytotoxicity independent of inherent microtubule stability. The mutagenesis of endogenous β-tubulin was done in otherwise isogenic strains. This facilitated the correlation of amino acid substitutions with altered cytotoxicity using molecular mechanics simulations. The results, which are based on the interaction between Epothilone B and dynamic microtubules, most strongly support the binding mode determined by NMR spectroscopy-based studies.     Space, Gaze and Power: A Foucauldian Methodology for Fashion Advertising Analysis

    This article examines fashion imagery in regard to representations of power as they pertain to the mise en scene of fashion advertising. By employing a specific form of image critique employed by Michel Foucault in The Order of Things (1966), a new methodology for analyzing fashion advertising is proposed and formulated. This form of critique enables elements such as the gaze, light and space to be framed into lines of sight. These lines can be examined in regard to the viewing subject, the staging of the advert, and structures of power. In his critique of the painting by Diego Velázquez Las Meninas (1656 Velazquez, D. 1656. Las Meninas. Madrid: Prado Museum. [Google Scholar]), Foucault states: “No gaze is stable, or rather, in the neutral furrow of the gaze piercing at a right angle through the canvas, subject and object, the spectator and the model, reverse their roles to infinity” (2005, 5). These themes enable us to use this methodology to critique fashion imagery and this article offers up a new approach to visual analysis, one that has not been considered before and that can now be added to the fashion theory toolbox

    Does Concomitant CABG Influence the Outcomes of Post-Myocardial Infarction Ventricular Septal Defect Repair?

    Introduction: Ventricular septal defect (VSD) following myocardial infarction (MI) is a relatively infrequent complication with high mortality. Over time, understanding of the pathology and its management has resulted in improved outcomes; however, controversies remain. Objective: We sought to investigate the effect of concomitant coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) on outcomes following post-MI VSD repair. Methods: Electronic search was performed to identify all relevant studies published from 2000 to 2018. After assessment for inclusion and exclusion criteria, 66 studies were selected for the analysis. Data were extracted and pooled for systematic review and meta-analysis. Results: Average age was 68.7 years (95% CI 67.3-70.1) with 57% (95% CI 54-60) males. Coronary angiogram was available preoperatively in 94% (95% CI 92-96) of patients. Single-vessel disease was most common (47%, 95% CI 42-52) with left anterior descending coronary artery the most commonly involved vessel (55%, 95% CI 46-63). Concomitant CABG was performed in 52% (95% CI 46-57) of patients. Of these, infarcted territory was revascularized in 54% (95% CI 23-82). No significant survival difference was observed between those who had concomitant CABG versus those without CABG at 30 days (65%, 95% CI 58-72) vs (60%, 95% CI 47-72), 1 year (59%, 95% CI 50-68) vs (51%, 95% CI 41-61), and 5 years (46%, 95% CI 38-54) vs (39%, 95% CI 27-52) respectively. Discussion: Overall, concomitant CABG did not have a significant effect on survival following VSD repair, therefore, decision on revascularization should be weighed against the risks associated with prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass

    The challenges of communicating research evidence in practice: perspectives from UK health visitors and practice nurses

    <p>Background: Health practitioners play a pivotal role in providing patients with up-to-date evidence and health information. Evidence-based practice and patient-centred care are transforming the delivery of healthcare in the UK. Health practitioners are increasingly balancing the need to provide evidence-based information against that of facilitating patient choice, which may not always concur with the evidence base. There is limited research exploring how health practitioners working in the UK, and particularly those more autonomous practitioners such as health visitors and practice nurses working in community practice settings, negotiate this challenge. This research provides a descriptive account of how health visitors and practice nurses negotiate the challenges of communicating health information and research evidence in practice.</p> <p>Methods: A total of eighteen in-depth telephone interviews were conducted in the UK between September 2008 and May 2009. The participants comprised nine health visitors and nine practice nurses, recruited via adverts on a nursing website, posters at a practitioner conference and through recommendation. Thematic analysis, with a focus on constant comparative method, was used to analyse the data.</p> <p>Results: The data were grouped into three main themes: communicating evidence to the critically-minded patient; confidence in communicating evidence; and maintaining the integrity of the patient-practitioner relationship. These findings highlight some of the daily challenges that health visitors and practice nurses face with regard to the complex and dynamic nature of evidence and the changing attitudes and expectations of patients. The findings also highlight the tensions that exist between differing philosophies of evidence-based practice and patient-centred care, which can make communicating about evidence a daunting task.</p> <p>Conclusions: If health practitioners are to be effective at communicating research evidence, we suggest that more research and resources need to be focused on contextual factors, such as how research evidence is negotiated, appraised and communicated within the dynamic patient-practitioner relationship.</p&gt
